CPCB Orders to Shut Export Units

  •  The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) ordered closure of nine major export and dyeing units in Panipat for flouting environmental norms.
  • The units are Pan Overseas, Textile World, Shiva Furnishing, Aggarwal Processors, Great Eastern, Shree Balaji Woolen, Raj Overseas, Pan Foods, and Hand Fab Living.

Blue Star Eyes Share in Home Water Purifiers

  •  Blue Star Ltd. Drew plans to capture about 10% market share in residential water purifier segment by 2020-21 and enter the commercial water purifier segment soon.
  • Blue Star entered into residential water purifier segment during October 2016.
  • As per the plan, Blue Star would invest about Rs. 30 crore in advertising and sales promotion in FY20, increase the number of stores to 5,000, raise the number of store sales representatives to 1,000 and service franchisees to 500. 

PWC Quits as Auditor

  •  Price Waterhouse & Co. (PWC) resigned as statutory auditor of Anil Ambani-led Reliance Capital and Reliance Home Finance.
  • PWC put in its resignation, with effect from June 11, 2019, citing unsatisfactory response to certain observations made by it as a part of the ongoing audit for fiscal 2018-19.
  • Both Reliance Capital and Reliance Home Finance said that they do not agree with the reasons given by PWC. 

Canon India Eyes Market Share in Inkjet Printers

  •  Canon India is targeting a 25% market share of the inkjet printer market in India, which is pegged at about 1.8 million units, in 2019.
  • India is one of the fastest growing inkjet business for Canon, especially among emerging markets.

Mozilla to Bring Paid Subscription to Firefox

  •  Mozilla, the maker of Open Source browser Firefox, is planning to offer a subscription service within Firefox that would offer users access to premium features like a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service and Cloud storage.
  • Chris Beard, CEO, Mozilla said that the company intends to begin offering the subscriptions starting October.
  • With this plan, Mozilla aims to develop "diverse sources of revenue" to avoid being heavily reliant on capital that comes from search companies that pay to be featured in the Firefox browser.

Annual Report on Internet Trends

  •  According to an annual report on internet trends by venture capitalist Mary Meeker, more than half the world's population is active on the internet, with India accounting for about 12% of them, retaining its second position.
  • China has the largest base, accounting for 21% of all internet users globally, and the US comes third at 8%.
  • The number of people active online in 2018 was approximately 3.8 billion, or 51% of the world's population.
  • The growth in internet users in India was driven by cut-price data plans introduced by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd and cheaper smartphones.
  • According to Meeker, Reliance Jio has created a hybrid, online-to-offline commerce platform by integrating Reliance Retail's physical marketplace with Reliance Jio's digital infrastructure and services, thus doubling its growth in a year to a total of 307 million subscribers.

KBFC Signs Sergio Cidoncha

  •  Kerala Blasters FC signed Spanish midfielder Sergio Cidoncha for this year's Indian Super League.
  • The 28-year-old, who started his football career with the youth ranks of Atletico Madrid, played for Jamshedpur FC in the ISL last season. He has also played for clubs like Real Zaragoza, Albacete and Ponferradina earlier.
  • Sergio is an all-rounder who can play in several positions and score goals.

National Crossminton in Ludhiana

  •  The National Crossminton championship will be held at the Govind National College, Narangwal district in Ludhiana from June 27 to 29.
  • The General Secretary of the All India Crossminton Organisation (AICO), Bilal Ahmad Khan stated that the championship will feature teams from 17 States.
  • There will be team championship apart from singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

President's Rule in J&K Extended

  •  President's rule in J&K was extended for six more months beginning July 3.
  • A meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, gave its approval to the extension.
  • Central rule has been in force since June 20, 2018.

Indian Medical Council Amendment Bill Cleared

  •  The Cabinet approved the Indian Medical Council (Amendment Bill), 2019 and the Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment Bill), 2019 – both of which had lapsed in the 16th Lok Sabha session. The Bills will be re-introduced in the next Parliament session.
  • The Medical Council Bill is aimed at bringing in transparency and quality in the governance of medical education.
  • Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment Bill), 2019, meanwhile, seeks to extend the period for reconstitution of the Central Council from existing period of one year to two years so that the tenure of the Board of Governors may be extended for a further period of one year with effect from May 17, 2019.
  • Cabinet  also approved the introduction of a Bill to amend the Dentists Act, 1948.

BJP Rejigs Parliamentary Panel

  •  The BJP reconstituted its parliamentary party executive committee, which is the nodal committee for co-ordination of the legislative party while Parliament is in sessions, marking a generational shift in the party as perhaps for the first time L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi are not part of it. Neither of the party veterans are MPs now.
  • Prime Minister Modi would be the Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha as well as of the BJP's parliamentary party; Defence Minister Rajnath Singh would be deputy leader of the parliamentary party in the Lok Sabha.
  • Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot would be the leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, with Railway Minister Piyush Goyal as deputy leader.
  • Lok Sabha MP from Bihar Sanjay Jaiswal would be the chief whip of the party in the Lok Sabha, with Narayan Panchariya as his Rajya Sabha counterpart.
  • Mr. Gehlot replaces former Union minister Arun Jaitley in the post after the latter requested the leadership of relieving him from key posts due to health issues.

DRDO Tests Tech Demonstrator

  •  The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the test of an indigenously developed Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) along with several critical technologies.
  • The DRDO launched a technology demonstrator vehicle to prove a number of critical technologies for futuristic missions from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
  • The test was undertaken to validate several technologies including the HSTDV. Some technologies were validated while some remained inconclusive of which the data is being analysed.

  •  The UK government formally launched its hunt for a new Bank of England Governor.
  • The following are some of the potential runners and riders:

Darvesh Kumari Yadav Shot Dead

  •  The newly elected president of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council, Darvesh Kumari Yadav was shot dead by a colleague in her chamber on the civil court premises.
  • The colleague, Manish Babu Sharma, fired at her thrice after an altercation and then shot himself in the head.

Reckitt Picks Pepsi's Narasimhan

  •  Consumer goods group Reckitt Benckiser picked PepsiCo executive Laxman Narasimhan as its next chief executive officer (CEO), becoming the latest industry heavyweight to turn to a company outsider to tackle faltering growth and new media-savvy rivals.
  • Narasimhan, PepsiCo's global chief commercial officer, is the first external candidate to be appointed as CEO at Reckitt since the maker of Durex condoms, Nurofen tablets and Dettol cleaners was formed in 1999.
  • Narasimhan would join Reckitt as CEO-designate and be appointed to the board in July 2019. He would become CEO in September 2019, replacing Rakesh Kapoor, who has led Reckitt for more than eight years.

International Albinism Awareness Day

  •  On 18 December 2014, the General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/69/170 proclaiming, with effect from 2015, 13th June as International Albinism Awareness Day.
  • The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in 2013 (A/HRC/RES/23/13) calling for the prevention of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism.
  • Moreover, in response to the call from civil society organisations advocating to consider persons with albinism as a specific group with particular needs that require special attention, on 26th March 2015, the Council created the mandate of Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism.

JNU's Alumni Award

  •  Jawaharlal Nehru University would confer its Distinguished Alumni Award to Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
  • The award will be presented at JNU's third convocation to be held in August.
  • They will be the first recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award to be conferred by the university.

Amitav Ghosh Conferred Jnanpith Award

  •  Author Amitav Ghosh was felicitated with the 54th Jnanpith Award for his outstanding contribution to the enrichment of Indian Literature in English.
  • Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who was the chief guest at the event, presented the award to the author. Mr. Ghosh is the first English language writer to become a Jnanpith laureate.
  • The Jnanpith award is the highest literary award in India and can only be conferred upon an Indian citizen. English language was added to the list of languages for consideration after the 49th Jnanpith Award.

Assam Misses Nutrition Target

  •  The ongoing exercise to update the National Register of Citizens, aimed at weeding out illegal immigrants, could have led to missed nutrition targets in Assam.
  • This was revealed in a review meeting of the state's performance of the Narendra Modi government's flagship nutrition scheme, "Poshan Abhiyaan".
  • "Poshan Abhiyaan" is a monitoring exercise under the National Nutrition Mission, aimed at bringing down stunting of children in the age group of 0-6 years from 38.4% to 25% by 2022.
  • Union minister of women and child development Smriti Irani held a meeting in Guwahati with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, state ministers Pramila Rani Brahma and Ranjit Dutta, and officials from both WCD and textiles ministries to take stock of the scheme.
  • When Irani tried to find out why Assam had failed to get even 50% of their targets for Poshan, state officials told her that the ongoing work to update the NRC was one of the prime reasons .

New Ebola Cases in Uganda

  •  Uganda announced two more cases of Ebola, a grandmother and a 3-year-old boy, confirming that a deadly outbreak has spread for the first time beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • The Ugandan cases show the epidemic is entering a truly frightening phase and could kill many more people.
  • The current Ebola epidemic began in August last year (2018) in eastern Congo and has already infected at least 2,062 people, killing 1,390 of them. 
  • The West Africa epidemic infected 28,000 people and killed 11,300, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
  • The viral disease spreads through contact with bodily fluids, causing hemorrhagic fever with severe vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding. 
  • Uganda, which has been on high alert for a possible spread of Ebola and has already vaccinated many frontline health workers, is relatively well prepared to contain the virus.
  • WHO is bringing in 3,500 additional vaccines and will begin vaccinating more people.
  •   The current cases in Uganda will be quickly contained but the failure to stop the current Ebola epidemic in DRC is simply tragic.
