Lynch Becomes US Attorney General

  • The US Senate confirmed Loretta Lynch as the nation`s first black female Attorney General, installing an aggressive counter-terrorism prosecutor as the top law enforcement official for President Barack Obama`s final 21 months in office.
  • Lynch was confirmed in a 56-43 vote -- with 10 Republicans crossing the political aisle to lend their support.
  • She takes over from outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder.

HDFC Cuts Home Loan Rates for Women

  • Mortgage major HDFC offered home loans to women borrowers at 9.85 percent, to make its loan pricing at par with that of rivals State Bank of India and ICICI Bank.
  • The loan will be subject to conditions like the woman being sole or joint owner of the property.
  • HDFC is the market leader in mortgage market with a loan book close to Rs 1.6 trillion as of December 2014.

RBI Widens PSL Coverage

  • The Reserve Bank revised priority sector lending norms to ensure a phased increase in loans to small farmers, and also made it clear that smaller foreign banks will have to meet the 40 percent target over the next five years.
  • Under the new guidelines, issued a day after the suicide of a farmer at a rally in Delhi, credit to small and marginal farmers will be 8 percent of a bank's total credit by by March 2017.

Google Offering Wireless Service to Nexus 6 Owners

  • Google has announced its decision to offer wireless service to Nexus 6 owners through a new program called, 'Project Fi.'
  • As per Google, Project Fi enables us to work in close partnership with leading carriers, hardware makers.
  • The service can only be availed on Google's Nexus 6 devices, both new and old ones, by using a special SIM card for Project Fi.
  • Consumers will only have to pay for the data they use rather than a flat monthly fee that comes with a preset amount of data. If you fail to use the data you've paid for, Google will refund you the difference.

  • Defending champion Kei Nishikori thrashed Colombian 15th seeded Santiago Giraldo to move into the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open.
  • The Japanese top seeded is making his first appearance of the season on clay court.
  • The world number five will face either Spain`s Roberto Bautista Agut or Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas.

BSNL Offers Free Pan-India Calling from Landline

  • To boost landline business, the state-run BSNL announced unlimited free calling scheme during night hours from its fixed line phones to any operator including mobile phones anywhere in the country from May 1.
  • The scheme would be operational between 9 PM to 7 AM.
  • Under the scheme, all major landline general plans of rural and urban areas, landline special plans as well as all major Combo (landline with broadband) plans are covered.

Cabinet Okays Setting up of Commercial Courts

  • The Cabinet approved the commercial courts bill that will allow setting up commercial courts, equivalent to district courts, in states and Union Territories where commercial divisions are not present.
  • The bill also provides for mandatory setting up of separate commercial divisions in those High Courts which are already exercising ordinary original civil jurisdiction such as High Courts of Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Himachal Pradesh.
  • Commercial divisions will exercise jurisdiction over all cases and applications relating to commercial disputes. The commercial division shall have territorial jurisdiction over such area on which it has original jurisdiction.
