UN Peace Envoy to Yemen Resigns

  • UN peace envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, has resigned, after losing support from Gulf countries for his mission in the conflict-riven nation.
  • The Moroccan diplomat had been UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon`s special envoy for Yemen since 2012.
  • Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, who currently heads the UN Ebola mission in Accra may take Jamal Benomar place.

Iran Nuclear Deal Possible Only if Sanctions Lifted

  • As per the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani Tehran will not accept a comprehensive nuclear deal with major powers if all sanctions imposed on Tehran were not lifted.
  • Rouhani said, ‘If there is no end to sanctions, there will not be an agreement."
  • Rouhani also said the U.S. Congress` power to review a nuclear deal with Iran was a domestic matter. Iran is in talks with the major powers and not with the Congress. Iran wanted to end its isolation by having "constructive interaction with the world and not confrontation”, said Rouhani.

China’s Economy Continues to Slow

  • China’s economy continued to slow further as it dipped to 7 per cent in the first quarter, the worst slump since the 2009 global financial crisis, raising concerns over the deceleration of the world’s second largest economy.
  • While China met an annual growth target of about 7 per cent set by its central government for 2015, it declined from the previous quarter’s 7.3 per cent.
  • The continued slowdown has become a major concern for policymakers as forecasts say the world’s second largest economy will continue to decelerate till next year.
  • As per a forecast by IMF forecast China’s growth would further decline to 6.8 per cent this year and 6.3 per cent next year, falling behind India’s 6.5 per cent.

IT Dept Publishes List of Tax Defaulters

  • The Income Tax department came out with a list of 31 defaulters who owe over Rs. 1,500 crore to the government.
  • Some of the big defaulters of income tax/corporate tax in the list are: Hyderabad-based Totem Infrastructure (Rs. 401.64 crore), Pune-based Patheja Bros Forging & Auto Parts Mfg Co (Rs. 224.05 crore), Hyderabad-based Royal Fabrics (Rs. 158.94 crore); and Mumbai-based Home Trade (Rs. 72.18 crore).
  • This is the second such list released by the department within one month. The earlier list had names of 18 entities who owe over Rs. 500 crore in tax to the exchequer.
  • As per a statement given by government in Parliament, the total Corporate Tax demand pending for collection up to the month of December, 2014 was Rs. 3,11,080 crore.

Petrol and Diesel Prices Cut

  • Petrol price was cut by 80 paise per litre and diesel by Rs. 1.30 a litre on global cues, the second reduction in rates this month.
  • Rates were cut by 49 paise a litre in case of petrol and Rs. 1.21 in diesel from April 2.
  • Since the last price change, the trend of international prices of petrol and diesel and Rupee—US dollar exchange rate warrant a further downward revision in prices, the impact of which is being passed on to consumers with this price decrease.

One of the Most Distant Planets Discovered

  • Scientists using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope have discovered a remote gas planet about 13,000 light-years away, making it one of the most distant planets known.
  • The discovery demonstrates that Spitzer can be used to help solve the puzzle of how planets are distributed throughout our flat, spiral-shaped Milky Way galaxy.

Novak Djokovic and Genzebe Dibaba Bag Laureus Awards

  • Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic and Ethiopian sprinter Genzebe Dibaba were named the Laureus Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, respectively.
  • The ceremony also saw the induction of Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar into the Laureus Academy. Djokovic pipped Lewis Hamilton (UK), Renaud Lavillenie (France), Rory McIlroy (UK), Marc Marquez (Spain) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) for the top honour. He was also awared in 2012.
  • Tendulkar become one of the five new members of the Laureus Sports Academy. Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid are the other Indian cricketers to receive the recognition.

Mulayam Singh Named Chief of New Party

  • Leaders of six political parties announced the formation of a new party to defeat the BJP and combat communal forces in the country.
  • As per reports, SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will lead the new political party and its parliamentary board committee.
  • The decision of the new political group was unanimously taken by the leaders of JDU, SP, RJD, SJP, JDS and INLD.
  • The name of party, symbol and flag will be decided after taking into consideration views of presidents of all six parties.
