China Reaps Rewards for Standing by Iran

  • China is reaping energy rewards for standing by Iran, with Tehran now promising Beijing with new deals once the sanctions related to the Iranian nuclear programme are lifted.
  • China one of the biggest buyers of Iran’s oil, has been greatly cooperating with the Islamic Republic under conditions of sanctions and we are willing for that cooperation to continue when sanctions are removed.
  • Last year, China bought 550,000 barrels of Iranian oil per day, marking a 28 per cent spurt in consumption over that in the previous year.

The Oldest Neanderthal DNA Sample

  • Researchers have stumbled upon the oldest Neanderthal DNA sample. The sample came from an ancient skeleton buried deep inside a cave in Italy.
  • The DNA could be up to 1,70,000 years old and could one day help form a clearer picture of the Neanderthal life.
  • The sample came from an extraordinarily intact skeleton of an ancient human, scientists had found amidst the stalactites and stalagmites of the limestone cave of Lamalunga, near Altamura in southern Italy in 1993.

Don't Trust Bank Balance Enquiry App

  • Cautioning the public against a fraudulent bank account mobile app in its name, the Reserve Bank said it had not developed any such application.
  • In a statement, the Reserve Bank said it had been brought to its notice that an app is doing the rounds on WhatsApp purportedly to facilitate checking of balance in customers’ bank accounts.
  • The Reserve Bank wishes to clarify that it has not developed any such application. Members of public are, therefore, advised to use the application, if at all, at their own risk.

Freight Rates Decline

  • Freight rates for nine-tonne payload section dropped by Rs. 1000 in the local truck transport following easy availability of trucks amid restricted cargo movements.
  • Transporters said easy availability of trucks in the market as compared to restricted cargo movements mainly pulled down freight rates.
  • Delhi to Chandigarh, Kanpur and Ludhiana freight rates fell by Rs. 1000 each to Rs. 14,000, Rs. 16,000 and Rs. 15,000.

Asteroid Named After Malala

  • The youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner and girls’ education campaigner Malala Yousafzai now has an asteroid named after her, media reported.
  • Amy Mainzer, astronomer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, named Asteroid 316201 after Malala.
  • Mr. Mainzer discovered the asteroid in the Main Belt between Mars and Jupiter which gives her the right to name it. It orbits the Sun every 5.5 years.

India Stuns Australia

  • Young striker Nikkin Thimmaiah scored a hat-trick as India produced its best performance of the tournament to stun world champion and title-holder Australia 4-2 on Saturday and secure a place in the third and fourth place play-off at the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament.
  • Already out of title race, India played without pressure and at last came up with a complete performance.
  • The China backed Iran-Pakistan project is being revived because the existing sanctions on Iran’s energy exports are likely to be lifted first, according to the nuclear framework agreement that was signed in Switzerland earlier this month.

Moderate Turnout in Maharashtra By-polls

  • As per election officials , the Tasgaon-Kavathemahankal Assembly constituency in Sangli district recorded 58 per cent and Bandra East in suburban Mumbai 42 per cent in the by-elections.
  • Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, voted at a polling booth near his Kala Nagar residence in Bandra East, where the Sena and the Congress were locked in a tough battle. Congress leader Narayan Rane, formerly with the Shiv Sena, is contesting for his political survival, and the Shiv Sena has pulled out all the stops to ensure that Trupti Sawant, the widow of its sitting MLA, Prakash Sawant, wins the battle. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen candidate Rehbar Khan’s ability to split the nearly 20 per cent Muslim votes in the constituency holds the key.
  • Polling began on a slow note but gradually picked up towards afternoon.
