Cheetahs Vyom and Neera released in Veerangana Durgavati Reserve
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released two cheetahs, Vyom (male) and Neera (female), into the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve in Sagar district on 7 October 2026. The cheetahs were brought from Kuno National Park under India's cheetah reintroduction programme. This marks the first introduction of cheetahs into the reserve and establishes it as Madhya Pradesh's third cheetah habitat. The move aims to expand suitable habitats for cheetahs and strengthen wildlife conservation in India, aligning with national biodiversity goals and future plans for reintroducing cheetahs into more protected areas.

It brings together global technology leaders, startups, investors and policymakers to promote India’s digital transformation, showcase innovations, and discuss policy and market opportunities for the telecom sector.

Palle Rama Rao, noted Indian metallurgist, passes away at 89
Distinguished Indian scientist and metallurgist Professor Palle Rama Rao died on 4 October 2026 at the age of 89. He was widely recognised for contributions to physical and mechanical metallurgy. Rao served as Director of the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). He also held the role of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hyderabad. In 2011, Rao was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan for his outstanding work in science and engineering. His passing is mourned by academia and policy institutes across India.

Kerala Police launches Speak Up task force against domestic violence
Kerala Police announced a new task force named Speak Up on 8 October 2026 to prevent domestic violence and protect survivors. The unit is headed by Inspector General of Police Ajeetha Begum. It aims to provide legal assistance, counselling, safe accommodation and livelihood support to survivors. A dedicated control room, digital helpline, WhatsApp facility and a mobile application enable confidential reporting. The initiative seeks to strengthen victim protection, encourage reporting and ensure timely police intervention in domestic violence cases. The program aligns with broader state and national efforts to improve safety for women and ensure access to justice for victims.
