Jawahar Dweep Marine Oil Terminal at the Mumbai Port Authority has become India’s first plastic-free oil terminal. The milestone was announced on 2 October 2026 during Swachhata Abhiyan 2026 at Grey Gate, Indira Dock, Mumbai, on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal led the programme. The initiative aims to eliminate single-use plastics from port operations and strengthen environmentally sustainable waste-management practices. Jawahar Dweep handles significant oil traffic for Mumbai Port. Its plastic-free status supports cleaner maritime operations and aligns with national pollution-control goals. The move forms part of a broader campaign to promote cleanliness in the maritime sector.

Lovlina Borgohain wins Asian Games gold in women’s 75 kg
Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain won the gold medal in the women’s 75 kg boxing event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on 2 October 2026. Borgohain defeated China’s Ziyi Bao by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the final. The victory coincided with Borgohain’s 29th birthday, making it a memorable day for her and supporters. Captain Smit Machchhar awarded Vishisht Gujarat Garima Award for bravery
Captain Smit Machchhar, a senior Indian airline pilot, has been selected by the Government of Gujarat for the Vishisht Gujarat Garima Award. The recognition honours his exceptional courage during a serious mid-air incident on a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Reports say Machchhar was assaulted by his co-pilot, who allegedly attempted to endanger the aircraft. Despite injuries, the captain reportedly maintained command, kept passengers calm, and opened the cockpit door to enable intervention by crew and passengers. The crew managed to divert the flight and land safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, saving more than 170 people on board. The incident drew praise from Indian and international leaders for Machchhar’s presence of mind and bravery.

India and Kazakhstan are conducting the ninth edition of Exercise KAZIND-2026 at Oskemen, Kazakhstan, from 28 September to 11 October 2026. India has deployed a 60-member Armed Forces contingent, including troops from the Garhwal Rifles and other Army units, along with personnel from the Indian Air Force. The exercise seeks to improve interoperability and strengthen joint counter-terrorism capabilities in semi-urban and mountainous terrain. Training covers joint planning, air mobility, unmanned aerial systems, and counter-drone operations. The Ministry of Defence notes this is the ninth edition, correcting earlier references to a tenth edition. The exercise reinforces India’s regional defence collaboration with Kazakhstan and aligns with wider security goals.

Indian jurist and academician Dr. Bimal N. Patel was sworn in as a judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on 1 October 2026 at the Tribunal’s headquarters in Hamburg, Germany. Patel, an expert in international law and the law of the sea, began a nine-year term covering 2026–2035. He had been elected to the Tribunal at the 36th Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. ITLOS is an international judicial body established under UNCLOS to adjudicate disputes concerning the interpretation and application of the law of the sea. Patel’s appointment continues India’s participation in maritime legal issues.
