FinBox unveils Atlas AI-native lending platform to cut loan timelines

FinBox has unveiled Atlas, an AI-native lending infrastructure platform designed to dramatically shorten loan processing times and boost borrower completion rates. The Mumbai-based fintech says Atlas automates critical stages of loan origination to address long approval cycles, bottlenecks, and high drop-offs in India’s rapidly growing digital lending market. In early deployments, Atlas reportedly cuts processing timelines from about three weeks to 24 hours and adapts to borrower language, behavior, and document availability. Early metrics show an 85% application completion rate, most applications finished under 10 minutes, credit turnaround dropping from 21 days to 1 day, 60% fewer file send-backs, and first-time-right processing above 95%.

Airtel appoints Mittal as chairman through 2031; Godrej to continue as independent director

Bharti Airtel announced through a board decision on 13 May 2026 that Sunil Bharti Mittal will continue as chairman for a five-year term starting October 2026, subject to shareholder approval, extending his tenure through 30 September 2031. Nisaba Godrej will also serve a second five-year term as an independent director, with appointments due to commence in August and October 2026, respectively. Mittal’s current term was set to end on 30 September 2026 before the new term begins. The company indicated these leadership moves will proceed with shareholder consideration at the upcoming approvals process.

IMD launches AI weather forecasting products for monsoon regions

The India Meteorological Department introduced two AI-based weather forecasting products aimed at monsoon regions dependent on rain-fed agriculture. The NCMRWF-developed product for Uttar Pradesh offers 1 km resolution rainfall forecasts with lead times up to 10 days, using data from rain gauges, weather stations, satellites, and Doppler radars. The IITM Pune-developed product tracks monsoon progression at district level and covers 3,196 blocks across 16 states and one Union Territory, with updates every Wednesday. Operated under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the tools support agriculture, water resource management, and disaster planning.

BIRSA 101 workshop on indigenous CRISPR gene therapy for Sickle Cell disease

Periasamy Kumaran Becomes India's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom

Periasamy Kumaran assumed charge as India's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom on 14 May 2026, presenting his credentials to Vice-Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps Scott Furssedonn-Wood. An Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1992 batch, Kumaran was most recently Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs. Kaal Bhairava AI combat aircraft to be manufactured in Portugal

Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace disclosed on 14 May 2026 that its Kaal Bhairava AI combat aircraft will be manufactured in Portugal, in collaboration with SKETCHPIXEL LDA. The project marks the first overseas production node for an Indian-designed autonomous combat aircraft. Kaal Bhairava is a MALE platform with a 3,000 km range and endurance over 30 hours, featuring AI-driven target recognition, swarm coordination, and encrypted communications. SKETCHPIXEL LDA will provide simulation technologies, AI integration, and interoperability capabilities, while Flying Wedge will retain core IP for autonomous systems and the airframe. Portugal becomes the initial European production site for the platform under Operation 777.

Foundation stone laid for AMCA project in Andhra Pradesh

Rajnath Singh and Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) infrastructure on 15 May 2026 at Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. The project involves ₹15,803 crore of investment across about 650 acres and is linked to India’s first indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Aeronautical Development Agency, the AMCA facility is expected to create about 7,500 direct high-skilled jobs and support prototype development following Cabinet Committee on Security approval in March 2024. The site will bolster India’s defence manufacturing base and related ecosystem.
