Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies to Set Up Centre for Wetland Studies to Address Conservation Challenges

  • Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) will set up a Centre for Wetland Studies to focus on issues related to wetland conservation and protection in the state, especially the Ramsar sites. The initiative comes in the backdrop of reports of large-scale conversion of paddy lands and wetlands in Ernakulam to push real estate development. According to recent reports from the commissionerate of land revenue, Ernakulam has the largest number of applications seeking conversion, with a real estate boom in the outskirts of the city and neighbouring municipalities situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake.
  • The initiative will also prioritise setting up Vembanad–Kol wetland as a national pilot site for comprehensive restoration and carrying-capacity assessment for these areas.

RBI MPC cuts repo rate by 25 bps to 5.25%, maintains neutral stance; revises GDP, inflation forecast for FY26

  • The RBI-led Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) concluded its three-day meeting and unanimously decided to cut the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.25%, according to Governor Sanjay Malhotra.
  • Consequently, the standing deposit facility (SDF) rate was revised to 5% from 5.25%, while both the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate were revised down to 5.5% from 5.75%.
  • Explaining the rationale behind the rate cut, the RBI governor said, "The growth-inflation balance, especially the benign inflation outlook on both headline and core, continues to provide the policy space to support the growth momentum."

  • The 17-year-old Anahat, the top seed and India's highest-ranked woman at world No. 29, prevailed 3-2 (11-8, 11-13, 11-13, 11-6, 11-8) in a gripping 52-minute battle against the unseeded but vastly experienced 39-year-old Chinappa.
  • This was Anahat's third win over Joshna in as many matches.

  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has launched the upgraded e-Swathu 2.0, a digital platform aimed at regularising rural properties in Karnataka. The system is expected to generate up to Rs 2,000 crore in revenue by bringing 95 lakh properties in gram panchayats under the tax net.

India Launches GIRG to Strengthen Its Global Rankings and Performance

  • The Indian government has announced a major initiative to compare the country's performance with 26 global indices. This effort aims to identify areas where India can improve and strengthen its position in international rankings. The announcement was made by Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, in Parliament on Monday.
  • This initiative is part of the Global Indices for Reforms and Growth (GIRG) platform. GIRG is designed to use international comparisons to guide policy changes, improve governance, and enhance India's statistical and data-reporting systems.

Tamil Nadu Adds Five New Products to Its GI Portfolio, Taking Total to 74

  • Five distinctive products from Tamil Nadu have been awarded the Geographical Indications (GI) tag, showcasing the State's rich heritage in traditional crafts, agricultural varieties, and artisanal skills. The newly recognised products include:
    - Woraiyur cotton sari
    - Kavindapadi nattu sakkarai (traditional jaggery powder)
    - Namakkal soapstone cookware (makkal pathirangal)
    - Thooyamalli rice (a traditional rice variety)
    - Ambasamudram choppu saman (wooden toys)
  • With this recognition, Tamil Nadu now possesses 74 GI-tagged products, strengthening its position as a leading contributor to India's cultural and craft diversity.

India-Malaysia Military Exercise 'Harimau Shakti' Begins in Rajasthan

  • A military exercise between the troops of India and Malaysia, aiming to synergise joint responses during counter-terrorist operations, began in Rajasthan.
  • The fifth edition of the joint military exercise 'Harimau Shakti' is being held at Mahajan Field Firing Range from December 5-18.
  • The Indian contingent is being represented mainly by troops from the Dogra Regiment. The Malaysian side is being represented by troops from the 25th Battalion Royal Malaysian Army, the defence ministry said in a statement.
  • "The aim of the exercise is to jointly rehearse conduct of sub-conventional operations under Chapter VII of United Nations mandate. The scope of the exercise includes synergising joint responses during counter-terrorist operations. Both sides will practise tactical actions such as cordon, search and destroy missions, heliborne operations, etc," it said.
  • In addition, Army Martial Arts Routine , combat reflex shooting and yoga will also form part of the exercise curriculum, the officials said.

Patan Craft & Culture Festival 2025 Showcases Nepali Art & Handicrafts

  • The Patan Craft and Culture Festival 2025 in Lalitpur attracted art lovers and handicraft enthusiasts. The Expo is running for a week jointly organised by the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN), Lalitpur, and Patan Museum. The festival aims to promote Nepali art, culture, and traditional handicrafts.
  • The event is running until December 7 at Patan Durbar Square and the Patan Museum premises. The festival features about 21 canopy stalls and 10 table stalls along with serving of traditional Newari foods. 
  • The Handicraft Promotion Committee of Lalitpur has showcased Newari traditional jewellery and ethnic costumes used in the ten rites of Buddhism. Classical music, Charya dance, Ashtamatrika dance, Kartik dance, along with Nepal Bhasa folk dances and songs, accompanied by traditional Dha Baja and Damokhi Baja performances are presented on daily basis.
