General Sahir Shamshad Mirza Retires as Pakistan's Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee

  • General Sahir Shamshad Mirza retired as Pakistan's Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), coinciding with the abolition of the top position under the newly passed 27th Constitutional Amendment.
  • The major tweak in the constitution reorganised the higher defence hierarchy by introducing the post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
  • Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will be the first CDF of the country. He was appointed as the army chief in 2024 for three years.
  • The 27th Constitutional Amendment allows Munir to stay in office as CDF till 2030.

Gen Horta N'Tam New Guinea-Bissau Leader

  • An army general was sworn in as Guinea-Bissau's new head of state a day after an apparent coup.
  • Gen Horta N'Tam became the transitional President for a period of one year. He took the oath in brief and muted proceedings at army headquarters.
  • Some civil society groups in Guinea-Bissau have accused outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of masterminding a "simulated coup" against himself with the help of the military, saying it was a ruse to block election results from coming out in case he lost.

CBDT Unveils 'NUDGE' Campaign: A Push for Voluntary Tax Compliance

  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) launched a new taxpayer outreach campaign named 'NUDGE', short for Non-intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable, to encourage voluntary compliance in income tax reporting. This campaign specifically urges individuals to review and revise their income tax returns (ITRs), especially focusing on Schedule FA (Foreign Assets) and Foreign Source Income (FSI) disclosures.
  • The move comes amid heightened global scrutiny on cross-border transactions and foreign asset reporting, aligning India with international standards of financial transparency.
  • The NUDGE campaign, starting immediately, is a data-backed, non-intrusive compliance initiative that will leverage pre-identified information to remind taxpayers of potential mismatches or omissions in their filed returns. The CBDT will reach out to taxpayers via SMS and email alerts, urging them to voluntarily verify, revise, or correct their returns by the end of the following month.

Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) Signs MoU with Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR)

  • The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a premier R&D centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR), a leading institution of national importance.  
  • As part of the MOU, C-DOT is setting up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Roorkee. The primary objective of C-DOT Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Roorkee, is to accelerate indigenous research, innovation and capacity building in advanced communication technologies. CoE will have a strong focus on research in the areas of wireless communication, Quantum technologies, Cyber security and AI based applications. Establishing CoE will promote academia–industry synergy leveraging academic expertise of IITR and industry strength of C-DOT and enable students, researchers, and start-ups to contribute to India's innovation and self-reliance journey.

WPL Auction 2026

  • There was a lot of excitement ahead of the 2026 Women's Premier League (WPL) mega auction in New Delhi. However, all five franchises opted to back experience over youth, tried and tested over freshness, while rebuilding their squads before season four begins on January 9, 2026.
  • All-rounder Deepti Sharma headlined the auction, going back to her existing franchise, UP Warriorz, for Rs. 3.20 crore, making it the joint second-highest buy in the auction history. The Abhishek Nayar-coached franchise used the Right-to-Match (RTM) card on the 28-year-old after the Delhi Capitals had won the solitary bid for her at Rs. 50 lakh.
  • She joined Nat Sciver-Brunt and Ashleigh Gardner, who were acquired for the same price by the Mumbai Indians and the Gujarat Giants, respectively, ahead of the inaugural auction in 2023.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Annapurna Devi Launch 'Nayi Chetna 4.0' for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment

  • Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, along with Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, inaugurated the fourth edition of 'Nayi Chetna – Initiative for Change'. This national campaign aims to foster gender equality and women's empowerment. On this occasion, Union Minister of State Kamlesh Paswan, Dr. Chandrashekhar Pemmasani, and Rural Development Secretary Shailesh Kumar Singh were also present.
  • At the event held at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, Sushma Swaraj Bhavan, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, Union Minister Shri Chouhan stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the government is undertaking many concrete initiatives for the economic and social empowerment of women.

PM to unveil Asia's Tallest statue of Lord Ram

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Asia's tallest 77-feet bronze statue of Lord Ram at Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Mutt, in Canacona, South Goa.
  • Modi also launched a postal stamp by India Post and a coin by the Union ministry of finance to commemorate the completion of 550 years of the mutt.
  • The mutt is one of the oldest in the country and, over the years, has gained a reputation and respect from across the world, cutting across religions.
  • The statue has been crafted by celebrated sculptor Ram Sutar.

IIT Kanpur to Train Army Units in Advanced Cyber Defence under New Pact

  • The Indian Army's Central Command will now receive structured cybersecurity training from IIT Kanpur's C3iHub, following a new Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two sides. The programme aims to prepare Army personnel for fast-evolving digital threats and strengthen operational readiness.
  • The collaboration focusses on building the Army's capacity to respond to fast-changing digital threats.
  • The programme includes two dedicated three-month modules designed to train personnel in core cyber defence practices.
  • The modules will cover emerging cyber threats, incident response frameworks and the fundamentals needed to secure military networks.
  • The MoU was formalised in the presence of Lt Gen Naveen Sachdeva, Chief of Staff, HQ Surya Command, and Professor Somitra Sanadhya, Programme Director, C3iHub.

Bharatanatyam Legend Kumari Kamala Passes Away

  • Kumari Kamala, one of Indian cinema's earliest child prodigies and a pioneering classical danseuse on film, passed away in the United States at the age of 91. A child prodigy who became one of the finest exponents of Bharatanatyam, Kamala's death marked the end of an era deeply tied to the transformation of Sadir into Bharatanatyam — India's most renowned classical dance form.
  • Her legacy as a performer, teacher, and global ambassador of Indian dance is unparalleled, and her contributions have left a lasting impact on generations of artists in India and abroad.
  • Kamala was among the few surviving links to a historic transformation in Indian performing arts — when the temple dance form of Sadir evolved into Bharatanatyam, suitable for the proscenium stage and public platforms in the 20th century.
  • Kumari Kamala's contributions were widely recognised through numerous awards,

  • Every year on November 28, Red Planet Day is celebrated, a day all about Mars, which is the fourth planet from the Sun. Mars is often called the "Red Planet" due to its reddish colour and has fascinated people—scientists and non-scientists alike—for many years.
  • Red Planet Day has a special history linked to major milestones in Mars exploration. It marks the anniversary of the launch of the Mariner 4 spacecraft on November 28, 1964, the first spacecraft to get close to Mars and send back detailed images of its surface. IITF 2025 Concludes with Record Footfall, Awards

  • The curtains came down on the 44th edition of the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, drawing massive crowds. The vibrant closing day was marked not only by a heavy shopping rush but also by a colourful award ceremony recognising the most outstanding pavilions across multiple categories.
  • The IITF 2025 Awards for Excellence in Display recognised outstanding participation across multiple pavilion categories. Rajasthan won the gold medal in the Partner State category, followed by Bihar with silver and Uttar Pradesh with bronze, while Maharashtra received a special commendation. In the Focus State category, Jharkhand earned the gold medal.
  • Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan segment, Haryana won gold, Punjab silver, and Assam bronze, with commendations for Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu.
  • In the Foreign Pavilion category, Thailand received the gold medal, Iran silver and Dubai bronze, while South Korea, Turkey and the Tibetan Chamber of Commerce earned special commendations.
  • Among Ministries and Government Departments, the Ministry of Defence secured gold, followed by the Ministry of Mines (silver) and the Ministry of Railways (bronze).

Cabinet Approves Scheme to Boost Rare Earth Magnet Manufacturing

  • The Union Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved a Rs. 7,280 crore scheme to promote manufacturing sintered rare-earth permanent magnets (REPM), marking India's first attempt to build an integrated domestic supply chain for the critical material.
  • The 'Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets' aims to create a production capacity of 6,000 tonnes of REPM a year to meet growing demand from sectors such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, electronics, aerospace, and defence, ultimately boosting local manufacturing competitiveness and the broader energy transition.
  • Under the scheme, five beneficiaries will be selected through a global competitive bidding process, with each eligible for up to 1,200 tonnes per annum capacity.

Odisha Launches New Scholarship Scheme for SC, ST Students to Study Abroad

  • The Odisha government launched a new overseas scholarship programme aimed at supporting Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students who wish to pursue postgraduate and doctoral studies in top global institutions.
  • The scheme, named 'Videsh Siksha Bruti', marks one of the state's most significant initiatives to expand higher education opportunities for disadvantaged communities.
  • Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj formally inaugurated the scheme and announced that it will be implemented from the 2025 to 2026 academic year.
  • Suraj said that students belonging to SC and ST categories with an annual family income of Rs. 12 lakh or below will be eligible to apply.
  • To qualify, applicants must have secured admission to postgraduate or PhD programmes at institutions ranked within the Top 200 in the QS World University Rankings.
  • Under the new scheme, each selected student will receive financial assistance of up to Rs. 25 lakh per year. This will support tuition fees, living expenses and other academic costs during their studies abroad.

IIT Bombay Renaming: Maharashtra to Approach Centre to Seek IIT Mumbai Name

  • The Maharashtra government will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union education ministry seeking to change the name of IIT Bombay to IIT Mumbai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
  • The announcement came amid a political controversy sparked by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh's remark on the nomenclature of the premier institute.

Israel-Palestine Conflict: Retired Justice S. Muralidhar Appointed Chair of UN Probe Panel

  • The United Nations appointed former Orissa High Court Chief Justice S. Muralidhar as the Chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, thus placing an Indian jurist at the helm of one of the UN's most closely watched human-rights investigations amid the continuing Israel-Palestine conflict.
  • The appointment was announced by Human Rights Council President Ambassador Jürg Lauber, who confirmed that Justice Muralidhar will lead the three-member body tasked with examining alleged violations of international humanitarian and human-rights law on both sides of the conflict. He will serve alongside Florence Mumba of Zambia and Chris Sidoti of Australia.
