  • Arunachal Pradesh witnessed a historic day with the launch of its first commercial coal mine at the Namchik-Namphuk coal block, marking a new chapter of growth, energy security, and local prosperity.
  • The Namchik Namphuk coal block, with reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes, was first allocated in 2003 but faced long delays and stoppages due to various challenges. It was revived through a transparent auction process in 2022, opening the doors for private sector entry and marking the end of years of delays.

India Names Gill ODI Captain

  • India named Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain for a three-match series, from October 19 to 25 in Australia. Former captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were also named in the squad.
  • Shreyas Iyer was named the vice-captain of the ODI team – a role that Gill played before his elevation.

Amanda Anisimova Wins China Open

  • Amanda Anisimova beat Linda Noskova 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 and won the China Open for her second title of a breakthrough year and fourth overall. She lifted the trophy in the Chinese capital almost exactly one month after reaching the US Open final, where she lost to world number one Aryna Sabalenka.
  • Anisimova is the third American to win the China Open after last year's champion Coco Gauff and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.
  • The 2025 China Open was a professional tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts. It was the 24th edition of the China Open for men and the 26th for women. It was played in Beijing, China.

Mohilary Sworn in as Bodoland Territorial Council Chief

  • Bodoland People's Front (BPF) president Hagrama Mohilary was sworn in as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in Assam's Kokrajhar district.
  • Former minister Rihon Daimary was also sworn in as the deputy CEM at a function held at the Bodoland Secretariat Field.
  • Mohilary, who became the CEM for the fourth time, took the oath of office and secrecy, administered by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, in English, while Daimary took it in the Bodo language.
  • The Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) swept the BTC polls, winning 28 of the 40 seats. The United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL) and the BJP, alliance partners in the outgoing BTC, finished with seven and five seats respectively.
  • BTC is an autonomous council for the Bodoland Territorial Region comprising five districts — Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri and Tamulpur.

Indian Navy Commissions Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft Andorth

  • The Indian Navy commissioned Androth, the second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at a ceremonial event at the Visakhapatnam Naval Dockyard.
  • The ceremony was presided over by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
  • Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, Androth is a testimony to India's growing maritime self-reliance with over 80 per cent indigenous content.

India, UK Navies Launch Mega Wargame 'Exercise Konkan'

  • The Indian Navy and the Royal Navy commenced the eight-day bilateral Exercise Konkan-25 in the Western Indian Ocean, reinforcing growing maritime cooperation between the two nations. Over the past two decades, this exercise has expanded in scale and complexity, fostering enhanced interoperability, strategic understanding, and mutual trust in maritime operations.
  • This year's edition sees participation from the UK Carrier Strike Group (UK CSG 25), led by HMS Prince of Wales, including assets from Norway and Japan, while India is represented by the carrier battle group of its indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, along with other surface, sub-surface, and air combatants.
  • The exercise is aimed at increasing combined maritime and air capabilities between the UK and Indian navies on the high seas.
  • The exercise is being conducted in two phases from October 5-12. The harbour phase of the Exercise includes professional interactions between naval personnel, cross deck visits, sports fixtures, and cultural engagements. Additionally, Joint Working Group meetings and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges are also scheduled.
  • The sea phase will encompass complex maritime operational drills focusing on anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine exercises, flying operations and other seamanship evolutions. Both participating nations will deploy frontline assets, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and integral and shore based air assets.

World Cerebral Palsy Day

  • World Cerebral Palsy Day (WCPD) is observed every year on October 6 to raise awareness about cerebral palsy (CP) — one of the most common physical disabilities in childhood. The day promotes inclusion, equality, and empowerment for those affected by CP and their families.
  • The Cerebral Palsy Alliance (Australia) and partner organizations established World Cerebral Palsy Day in 2012 to bring together individuals, families, and advocacy groups from across 100+ countries.
  • The aim was to ensure that children and adults with cerebral palsy have equal rights, opportunities, and access — regardless of geography or economic background.
  • Since then, October 6 has become a global day of solidarity and empowerment, coordinated by the World Cerebral Palsy Alliance (WCPA).
  • The 2025 observance carries the theme "Unique and United", reflecting the dual spirit of individual strength and collective solidarity in the global CP community.

World Habitat Day

  • Every first Monday of October, the world comes together to mark World Habitat Day, a moment to reflect on the state of human settlements and the right of every person to adequate shelter.
  • World Habitat Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, with the first observance in 1986 in Nairobi under the theme "Shelter is My Right."
  • Since then, it has become a global platform to advocate for sustainable urban development, affordable housing, and inclusive planning in response to rapidly growing cities.
  • In 1989, the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Awards were introduced to recognise outstanding contributions toward improving urban living conditions.

Amit Shah Launches Goa's 'Mhaje Ghar Yojana'

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Goa government's flagship welfare programme 'Mhaje Ghar' Yojana at a function held at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Taleigao.
  • The scheme aims to regularise houses built on government and community lands and to grant ownership rights to long-time residents. He also inaugurated projects worth more than Rs. 2,452 crore.
  • Amit Shah inaugurated the 'Mhaje Ghar' Yojana in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union Minister of State Shripad Naik, and Revenue Minister Atanasio Monserrate, among other dignitaries.
  • The Union Home Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several major infrastructure projects across the state. These include redevelopment of Junta House, government quarters at St Inez, construction of a new circuit house at Altinho, and development of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum at Farmagudi.
