EPFO Officer Selected for World Bank-Milken PFAM Program

  • In 2025, Vivekanand Gupta, Regional Provident Fund Commissioner, has been selected to represent India and the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in the prestigious Public Financial Asset Management (PFAM) Program 2025–26.
  • The program is jointly organised by the World Bank and the Milken Institute, and hosted at Bayes Business School, City, University of London.
  • This marked the first time an EPFO officer was chosen for this elite global program and the first-ever representation from India, establishing a landmark moment in public financial leadership and international engagement.
  • The nomination was facilitated through a rigorous selection process conducted by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Academy of Social Security (PDUNASS)—EPFO's apex training institution.
  • By identifying and recommending Shri Gupta, PDUNASS has elevated EPFO's presence in the global arena and set a precedent for future institutional collaborations in investment governance, capital markets, and asset management.
  • The Public Financial Asset Management (PFAM) Program is a globally acclaimed leadership development initiative.

Carlos Felipe Jaramillo Appointed as World Bank Vice President for East Asia and Pacific (EAP) Region

  • In September 2025, the World Bank Group appointed Carlos Felipe Jaramillo as Vice President for the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) Region.
  • The appointment marked a significant shift in the Bank's regional operations, with Singapore now designated as the regional hub—reflecting the institution's broader decentralisation strategy to improve client services and on-the-ground support.
  • As EAP Vice President, Jaramillo will oversee partnerships with 23 countries and manage an active portfolio exceeding US$32 billion.

  • Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, through video conference, inaugurated the Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) new industrial estate at Muththur in Palaymkottai taluk.
  • Tirunelveli District Collector R. Sukumar, Palayamkottai MLA M. Abdul Wahab, and Deputy Mayor of Tirunelveli K.R. Raju lighted the traditional lamp at the site.

Indian Scientists Create Foldable, Eco-friendly Battery for Safer Energy Storage

  • Researchers in Bengaluru developed a flexible, safe, and environmentally friendly battery that could serve as an alternative to conventional lithium-ion cells.
  • The work, carried out by the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), under the Department of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) at the Indian Institute of Science, uses aluminium and a water-based solution to power devices.
  • Aluminium is one of the most abundant metals on Earth and offers a cheaper and safer option compared with lithium.
  • Traditional lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in phones, laptops, electric vehicles, and wearable devices, can overheat or catch fire.
  • The new aluminium-ion battery is less prone to such risks and reduces environmental hazards linked to battery disposal.
  • The researchers overcame the challenges of aluminium's complex chemistry by engineering the battery's components at a microscopic level.

Google Launches Payments Protocol for Agentic AI Transactions

  • Google announced an open payments protocol for transactions on agentic payment systems in September 2025. Called Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), the system is supported by more than 60 companies including American Express, Mastercard, Revolut, Coinbase, Paypal, Etsy, Salesforce and Inuit. 
  • Using this protocol, AI agents will eventually be able to shop on behalf of customers while interacting with retail agents.

Apollo Tyres New Jersey Sponsor of Indian Cricket Team, Deal Worth Rs. 579 Crore

  • In 2025, Apollo Tyres acquired the jersey sponsorship rights of the Indian cricket team under a five-year agreement lasting until March 31, 2028.
  • The agreement covers around 140 matches, including bilateral series and International Cricket Council (ICC) events.
  • Apollo Tyres pays the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approximately INR 4.5 crore for each bilateral match and INR 1.72 crore for each ICC match.
  • The overall value of the deal is estimated at around INR 579 crore.

Samuel Umtiti Retires from Football at Age 31

  • In September 2025, Samuel Umtiti, the 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning French defender, officially announced his retirement from professional football.
  • Once regarded as one of the finest centre-backs in Europe, Umtiti's career was tragically derailed by chronic knee injuries that restricted his playing time and eventually forced an early exit from the sport.
  • The announcement was made via an emotional social media video, in which Umtiti expressed gratitude to the clubs and fans who supported him throughout his journey.
  • Umtiti began his professional career at Olympique Lyonnais, quickly established himself as a technically gifted, strong, and intelligent defender.
  • His performances earned him a high-profile transfer to FC Barcelona in 2016, where he initially flourished.
  • Umtiti's crowning achievement came during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where he formed a solid central defensive partnership with Raphaël Varane. He scored the winning goal in the semi-final against Belgium, helping France reach the final and eventually lift the trophy after defeating Croatia 4–2.

Defence Minister to Hoists National Flag to Mark Telangana Liberation Day at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad

  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hoisted the national flag, participated in the parade by central para-military forces at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad, and also unveiled the statue of Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Cantonment Park near Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) on the occasion of Telangana Liberation Day in September 2025.

India Signs MoU with ILO to Advance global Classification of Occupations

  • In 2025, to enhance the global employability of Indian workers, the Union government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to advance the International Reference Classification of Occupations (IRCO).
  • The agreement aimed to help Indian youth access global job markets by aligning domestic occupational data with international standards.
  • The MoU was signed in Geneva, Switzerland, by Ambassador Arindam Bagchi, India's Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva, and Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director-General of the ILO.
  • Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya attended the event virtually.

PM Modi Opens 16th Armed Forces Conference in Kolkata

  • Prime Minister inaugurated the 16th Combined Commanders' Conference in Kolkata. Held once in two years, this conference was the apex-level brainstorming forum of the Armed Forces that brought together the nation's top civilian and military leadership to exchange views and lay the groundwork for the future development of India's military preparedness.
  • The theme of the Conference was 'Year of Reforms – Transformation for the Future', in line with the ongoing modernisation and transformation of the Armed Forces.

Multinational Exercise Pacific Reach 2025

  • Indian Navy's latest indigenously designed and constructed Diving Support Vessel (DSV), INS Nistar made its maiden port call at Changi, Singapore in September 2025.
  • The ship functioning under the Command and Control of the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet will be participating in the multinational Exercise Pacific Reach 2025 (XPR 25) commenced September 2025.
  • Exercise Pacific Reach 2025, being hosted by Singapore seen participation of more than 40 nations as active participants or as observers.
  • The exercise will mainly be conducted in two phases viz. harbour and sea phase.
  • The week-long harbour phase will involve in-depth discussions on submarine rescue systems, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE), medical symposium and cross deck visits between the participating nations.
  • The Sea phase of the exercise would witness INS Nistar and SRU(E) engaging in multiple intervention and rescue operations with participating assets in South China Sea.

Sarada Hoffman, Kalakshetra Bharatanatyam Guru, Dies at 96

  • Renowned Bharatanatyam exponent and Kalakshetra teacher Alladi Sarada (Sarada Hoffman), affectionately called Chinna Sarada and Sarada teacher, died in September 2025 in California. 
  • She played a significant role in shaping and standardising the Kalakshetra methodology for Bharatanatyam, and her efforts unified several loosely knit traditional training systems.
  • She had received many prestigious awards, including the Central Sangeet Natak Academy (1996) and the first 'Rukmini Devi Medal for Excellence in the Arts', instituted by the Centre for Contemporary Culture, New Delhi.

Robert Redford, Oscar-winning Actor, Director and Indie Patriarch, Dies at 89

  • Robert Redford, the Hollywood golden boy who became an Oscar-winning director, liberal activist and godfather for independent cinema under the name of one of his best-loved characters, died in September 2025 at 89.
  • After rising to stardom in the 1960s, Redford was one of the biggest stars of the '70s with such films as "The Candidate," "All the President's Men" and "The Way We Were," capping that decade with the best director Oscar for 1980's "Ordinary People," which also won best picture in 1980.

PM Vishwakarma & National SC-ST Hub Mega Conclave in Bodh Gaya

  • The Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India organised 'PM Vishwakarma and National SC-ST Hub Mega Conclave' in September 2025, at the International Convention Center, Bodh Gaya, Bihar.
  • The event was held in commemoration of the second anniversary of PM Vishwakarma Scheme.
  • The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the PM Vishwakarma Scheme on September 17, 2023 to provide end-to-end support to traditional artisans and craftspeople in 18 trades with the aim of transforming them to successful entrepreneurs.
  • The Scheme provides benefits to artisans and craftspeople with Recognition, Skill Upgradation, Toolkit Incentive, Credit Support, Incentive for Digital Transaction and Marketing Support.
  • Further, for inclusive growth, the 'National SC-ST Hub (NSSH) Scheme' was launched by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in October 2016 with the objective of augmenting the capacity of SC-ST entrepreneurs and to empower them to participate in public procurement process and to fulfill the mandated target of 4% public procurement from SC-ST MSEs.
  • Several initiatives have been undertaken to boost entrepreneurship amongst SC/STs in skilling/capacity building, market linkages, finance facilitation, tender bid participation, etc.

PM Modi Launches 'Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan', Poshan Maah

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan' along with the eighth edition of Poshan Maah in September 2025, marking what the government described as India's largest-ever women and child health mobilisation drive.
  • The initiative, jointly spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD), focuses on preventive, promotive and curative health services for women, adolescent girls and children.
  • As part of the campaign, more than one lakh health camps will be organised across the country from September 17 to October 2, with daily camps in all government health facilities.
  • The Abhiyaan will cover screening for non-communicable diseases, cancers, anaemia, tuberculosis, sickle cell disease, and maternal health, besides providing nutrition counselling, menstrual hygiene promotion and awareness sessions on lifestyle and mental health.

CBSE Introduces New Two-exam Policy for Class 10, Revises Rules for Sports and Olympiad Participants

  • In 2025, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced a new two-exam policy for Class 10 starting in 2026.
  • It mandates that sports students of Class 10 will now be eligible to appear in the second set of Board Examinations scheduled for May if their sports events or travel clash with the first exam cycle in February. No additional exams will be conducted outside this schedule.
  • The CBSE revised the provisions for Class 10 students who are unable to take the board examination due to their participation in national or international sports events or international Olympiads. However, there is no change in the scheme for Class 12. For Class 12 students whose journeys or sports events clash with the examinations, re-examinations will be conducted after the first cycle is over.
  • Since March 2018, CBSE has been providing a special opportunity to the students by conducting special examination at a later date for the students who are participating in national or international sports events.
  • In 2020, this provision was extended for students who participated in international olympiads.
