France in Fresh Political Crisis after MPs oust Prime Minister

  • France plunged into a new political crisis with the defeat of Prime Minister François Bayrou at a confidence vote in the National Assembly.
  • The defeat – by 364 votes to 194 – means that Bayrou will present his government's resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, who must now decide how to replace him.
  • The options include naming a new Prime Minister from the centre-right; pivoting to the left and finding a name compatible with the Socialist Party; and dissolving parliament so new elections are held.

HCLTech Names Ex-G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant as Independent Director

  • HCL Technologies appointed former G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant as an Independent Director for a term of five years.
  • Amitabh Kant's five-year term will expire on September 7, 2030. His appointment was recommended by the firm's Nomination & Remuneration Committee.
  • Kant, a former IAS officer of the 1980 Kerala cadre batch, is known for his role in several key national initiatives, including 'Make in India', 'Start-up India', and the 'Incredible India' tourism campaign. He most recently served as India's G20 Sherpa during the country's presidency of the grouping.

India and Israel Sign Bilateral Investment

  • India and Israel signed a landmark Bilateral Investment Agreement (BIA) that is expected to boost reciprocal investments and strengthen trade ties between the two countries. The agreement was inked by India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
  • The treaty was signed during Smotrich's three-day visit to India. 
  • A Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) is a reciprocal agreement between two nations aimed at promoting and protecting foreign investors of one country in the other. It guarantees protection under a legal framework and ensures fair and equitable treatment, protection from expropriation, and free transfer of funds.

  • India began celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary singer, poet, and composer from Assam. Known for his powerful voice and timeless songs on humanity, equality, and cultural unity, Hazarika's work continues to inspire generations. The centenary celebrations aim to honour his immense contributions to music, cinema, and social change, while keeping his legacy alive for future generations.
  • Bhupen Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926, in Assam. He became one of India's most iconic cultural figures through his soulful songs, powerful lyrics, and socially relevant compositions.
  • Hazarika was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to music and culture. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 85.

Himachal Pradesh Becomes Fourth Fully Literate State

Operation Rahat: Army Carrying Out Relief, Restoration Efforts in Flood-hit Regions

  • The Indian Army's Western Command, under 'Operation Rahat', is conducting extensive Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions in the flood-affected regions of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir -- the states where nature's fury has claimed several lives and caused devastation.
  • So far 82 HADR missions have been executed with the deployment of 59 Army columns, including 17 Engineer Task Forces, leading to the evacuation of more than 6,000 citizens that includes approximately 300 paramilitary force personnel.

Nepal-China Joint Military Exercise in Kathmandu

  • The fifth edition of Sagarmatha Friendship, a joint military exercise between Nepal Army and the Peoples Liberation Army of China kicked off in Kathmandu.
  • There will be knowledge exchanged between the two armies during the 10-day long joint military exercise on matters related to disaster management, United Nations Peace Mission and counter-terrorism among others.
  • The joint military exercise is being organised in Nepal and China on rotation basis since 2017.
  • The exercise concludes on September 16.

Senior Journalist Sankarshan Thakur Passes Away

  • Veteran journalist Sankarshan Thakur, editor of The Telegraph whose prowess with words added that extra edge to his analyses and ground reports, died at the age of 63.
  • Thakur, who began his journalism career in 1984 with SUNDAY magazine, has worked in several places, including The Indian Express, Tehelka and The Telegraph in two stints.
  • Known for his sharp political commentary and empathetic pen, Thakur was a keen chronicler of India's politics, particularly Bihar. His home state was the focus of not just his journalism but also his credentials as an author.
  • Thakur authored the widely cited and bestselling biographies of the state's prominent political figures. His books include "Subaltern Saheb", a political biography of former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, "Single Man: The Life and Times of Nitish Kumar of Bihar", and "The Brothers Bihari", a highly acclaimed political diptych on Yadav and Kumar.
  • Thakur's distinguished contributions earned him the Prem Bhatia Award for excellence in political journalism (2001) and the Appan Menon Fellowship (2003).
