TCS Appoints Amit Kapur as Head of the Newly Formed AI and Services Unit

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) created a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Services Transformation unit, highlighting AI's increasing role in the company's plans.
  • The company named Amit Kapur, who heads TCS's UK and Ireland business as the head of its newly formed AI and services transformation unit. He will assume the role of Chief AI and Services Transformation Officer from September 1, 2025. Kapur has worked with TCS for over 26 years and will report to Aarthi Subramanian, Executive Director, President and Chief Operating Officer.

ISRO to Commence Construction of Launchpad at Second Spaceport

  • The Indian Space agency ISRO is all set to commence construction of a rocket launchpad at the country's upcoming second spaceport, close to the southern tip of the country. ISRO Chief V. Narayanan and top officials participated in the 'Bhoomi Puja', a pre-construction ritual, at the proposed launchpad site in Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu.
  • Currently, India's only spaceport is the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, located along the southeast coast of the country. The Kulasekarapattinam launch facility, which is expected to become operational in a few years, is about 650 kilometres south of the Sriharikota spaceport.
  • ISRO Chief V. Narayanan said that the new spaceport, spread across 2,300 acres, is meant to launch the ISRO-developed Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) and the space faring rockets being built by Indian start-ups.
  • The construction of the country's second launch complex is expected to be completed by December 2026.

  • The Yuva Andhra Championship 2025, a feeder into the Telugu Kabaddi League, concluded at the Chennupati Ramakotaiah Municipal Corporation Indoor Stadium. Amravati Crushers emerged champions after topping the Super 4 stage.
  • Amravati Crushers sealed the crown by overcoming Kurnool Knights 50-37.

Bihar Hosts 12th Men's Asia Cup at Rajgir Hockey Stadium

  • Bihar is hosting the 12th edition of the Men's Asia Cup at the newly developed Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Nalanda district from August 29, culminating with the final on September 7.
  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled the mascot 'Chand' and the 'Trophy' for the Hero Asia Cup 2025.
  • This men's hockey tournament features top teams from India, China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Korea, Kazakhstan, and Bangladesh.

Elavenil Valarivan Wins Gold in Asian Shooting Championship

  • Elavenil Valarivan clinched the gold medal in women's 10m air rifle competition at the Asian Championships.
  • The silver went to China's Xinlu Peng with a score of 253, while Korea's Eunji Kwon (231.2) took home the bronze.
  • The 16th Asian Championships (Shooting Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun) are taking place from August 16–30, 2025, in Shymkent, Kazakhstan.

Regional Conference of Skill Ministers - Kaushal Manthan Held in Chandigarh

  • The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) convened the Regional Conference of Skill Ministers 'Kaushal Manthan' in Chandigarh, a landmark dialogue aimed at deepening collaboration between the Centre, States and Union Territories on the future of skills and entrepreneurship. Guided by the vision of the Prime Minister's mantra of skilling, re-skilling and up skilling, the conference, chaired by Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Government of India, brought together Skill Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior officers and policy leaders from across North India.
  • The conference witnessed the participation from State/UT Governments of Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Bhubaneswar Hosts National Conference on Welfare of SCs and STs

  • Bhubaneswar is hosting a two-day National Conference of Chairpersons of Committees on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes on August 29–30. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the conference.
  • Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Surama Padhy, delivered the welcome address, while Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi proposed the vote of thanks.
  • More than 120 delegates, including Chairpersons and Members of Committees on the Welfare of SCs and STs from Parliament and State/UT legislatures, are taking part in the conference. The theme is 'Role of Parliamentary and Legislative Committees in Welfare, Development and Empowerment of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes'.

India, Qatar Hold Talks to Expand Investment Cooperation

  • India and Qatar held a high-level meeting to explore opportunities for boosting Qatari investments in India, particularly in sectors such as infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, transport, logistics, food processing, healthcare, semiconductors, and finance.
  • The discussions followed up on Qatar's commitment to invest $10 billion and open an office of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) in India, a pledge made during the state visit of Qatar's Amir to India in February 2025.
  • Both sides agreed to promote further discussions for investments by QIA and other Qatari entities, focusing on key sectors, projects, and companies. The Qatari delegation conveyed confidence in India's economic growth and technological advancements.

  • The event featured participation of naval officers from member nations engaging in discussions on maritime security challenges and fostering collaboration in emerging technology and harnessing training capabilities.
  • The themes of the panel discussion included – 'Strategic Importance of Indian Ocean Region and Challenges Being Faced: Perspective of Young Officers', 'Emerging Technologies in Maritime Security', 'Future role of IONS in Fostering Collaboration towards Maritime Security' and 'Harnessing Training Capabilities amongst IONS Countries: Future Road Map'.

  • The Ministry of Education released the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2024-25 report, providing a detailed overview of school education across India. For the first time since UDISE+ was launched, the total number of teachers in the country has crossed the one crore mark, signaling a significant boost to the education system.
  • According to the report, the teacher workforce increased from 94.8 lakh in 2022-23 to over 1.01 crore in 2024-25, a rise of 6.7% over two years. This growth is helping improve the student-teacher ratio (PTR).

Air India Express Becomes Fourth Indian Airline to Join Global Body IATA

  • Air India Express joined the IATA as a member, making it the fourth Indian carrier to be part of the global airlines' association.
  • The International Airport Transport Association (IATA) represents around 350 airlines that account for about 80 per cent of the global air traffic.
  • IATA welcomed the membership of Air India Express, which was launched in 2005 and is the low-cost wholly-owned subsidiary of Air India.
