Nayara Energy Appoints Teymur Abasguliyev as CEO

  • Nayara Energy, one of India's major private oil refiners, appointed Teymur Abasguliyev, a senior executive from SOCAR Turkiye Enerji A.S., as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The decision follows the resignation of Alessandro Des Dorides and other top European executives.
  • The appointment came in the wake of the European Union's 18th round of sanctions on Russia, which included Nayara Energy due to its association with Rosneft, a Russian state-owned oil giant that holds a 49.13% stake in Nayara.
  • Teymur Abasguliyev is an Azerbaijan national, educated at Baku State University. He has had a long career in finance and energy.

Pixxel's Firefly Satellites, Dhruva Space's LEAP-1 Placed in Orbit

  • Three hyperspectral imaging satellites developed by the Indian start-up Pixxel were successfully placed in orbit by SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. The launch of the three satellites, along with the three launched earlier in January (2025), marked the completion of the first phase of the Firefly constellation.

Ravichandran Ashwin Announces Shocking IPL Retirement

  • Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India's finest cricketing minds and legendary off-spinners, officially retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing an end to a decorated domestic T20 career. Having last played for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2025, the veteran's announcement marks the end of an era. With his exit from both international and IPL circuits, Ashwin now sets his sights on exploring global T20 leagues, an opportunity made possible only after stepping away from Indian cricket.

Goa Cabinet Reshuffle

  • Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant allocated portfolios to Digambar Kamat and Ramesh Tawadkar, days after they were inducted into the Cabinet.
  • While Kamat, who served as the Chief Minister of Goa from 2007 to 2012 during the last Congress government in the state, was allocated the portfolios of Public Works Department (PWD), captain of ports, and legal metrology, former speaker Tawadkar was allocated tribal welfare, art and culture, and Sports and Youth Affairs.

Cabinet Approves ₹12,328 crore Railway Projects across Five States

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved four major railway projects worth around ₹12,328 crore aimed at boosting connectivity, freight movement, and regional development. The projects include one new rail line in Gujarat's Kutch region and multi-tracking works in Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar, and Assam.

India and Japan Strengthen Naval Ties with UNICORN Project

  • India and Japan are deepening their defence cooperation through the co-development of the Unified Complex Radio Antenna (UNICORN) project, a cutting-edge radar mast system for Indian Navy warships.
  • The UNICORN system, also known as Nora-50, is an advanced integrated communication and radar mast designed to improve stealth and operational efficiency. Originally developed by Japan's NEC Corporation, Sampa Kogyo KK, and Yokohama Rubber Company for the Mogami-class frigates of the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF), UNICORN consolidates multiple antennas into a single composite structure.

Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Attends Chiefs of Defence Conference 2025 in Thailand

  • Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit participated in the annual Chiefs of Defence Conference in Thailand from August 26 to 28, 2025. The event was jointly hosted by the United States Indo-Pacific Command and Royal Thai Armed Forces.
  • The conference is a premier multilateral forum that brings together the Chiefs of Defence from nations across the Indo-Pacific region to deliberate on the evolving regional & global security challenges, cooperative frameworks and avenues for strengthening military-to-military engagements. Cabinet Extends PM SVANidhi Scheme Till 2030 with ₹7,332 crore Outlay

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the restructuring and extension of the Prime Minister Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme. The lending period, which was earlier valid till December 31, 2024, has now been extended to March 31, 2030. The total outlay for the restructured scheme is ₹7,332 crore.
  • Under the new provisions, the loan amount in the first and second tranches has been increased. The first tranche will now provide up to ₹15,000, instead of ₹10,000 earlier, and the second tranche has been raised to ₹25,000 from ₹20,000. The third tranche of ₹50,000 remains unchanged. Beneficiaries who repay the second loan will also become eligible for a UPI-linked RuPay Credit Card.

CBSE, AIIMS-Delhi Launch Project 'MATE' for School Counsellors

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, launched a five-day offline training programme under Project MATE (Mind Activation Through Education). The training, at the AIIMS Delhi runs until August 30.
  • According to CBSE, Project MATE has been developed by AIIMS Delhi as an adolescent wellness programme designed to enhance resilience, build coping strategies, and strengthen peer connectivity through the "MATE-5" framework.
