  • India's Aishwary Tomar won the gold medal in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions event at the Asian Shooting Championship 2025 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan.

Mirabai Chanu Wins Gold at Commonwealth Championship

  • Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a gold medal at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad and marked a triumphant return to competitive action. The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist lifted a total of 193kg and set new Commonwealth Championship records in snatch, clean and jerk, and total, finishing atop the women's 48kg podium. This included 84kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk, both setting new Commonwealth Championship records. The win also secured her direct qualification for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova Retires

  • Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova retired from tennis after being knocked out of the US Open.
  • She was beaten 6-1 6-0 by France's Diane Parry in their first-round meeting in New York.
  • Kvitova's two-decade career had many memorable highlights, but her two victories at Wimbledon will always be the pinnacle.
  • In the 2011 tournament, she beat Maria Sharapova 6-3 6-4 in the final to seal her first Grand Slam success.

  • This was Sitiveni Rabuka's first visit to India in his current capacity.

With No Withdrawal, All Set for Direct Contest between NDA, Opposition for V-P's Post

  • With neither of the two candidates for the vice presidential election withdrawing their nomination, the stage is set for a direct contest between ruling NDA nominee C. P. Radhakrishnan and joint opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy on September 9.
  • Both candidates this time hail from southern India, with Radhakrishnan from Tamil Nadu and Reddy from Telangana. The vice-presidential poll has been described by the opposition as an ideological battle, even as the numbers are stacked in favour of the ruling NDA.

Central Industrial Security Force Creates First-ever All-women Commando Unit

  • In a significant policy initiative aimed at encouraging women empowerment in the organisation, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is all set to induct its first-ever -All-Women Commando Team' into its core operations. Training of women commandos has already begun at the Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Barwaha, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The specially designed eight-week-long advanced commando course for the women personnel will prepare them for Quick Reaction Teams (CRT) and Special Task Force (STF) duties at high security establishments and installations guarded by the force. The programme includes physical fitness and weapons training, live-fire drills under stress, endurance-building exercises like running, obstacle courses, rappelling, survival training in forests, and other methods designed to test decision-making and teamwork under adverse conditions.
  • The first batch of 30 women personnel, who are currently deployed across various airports—will undergo training up to October 4, which began earlier this month. The second batch of women personnel will undergo the training from October 6 to November 29.

Indian Navy Commissions Stealth Frigates Udaygiri and Himgiri

  • In a landmark moment, the Indian Navy commissioned two cutting-edge Nilgiri-class stealth frigates - INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri - each equipped with 8 BrahMos missiles. These 6,700-tonne warships significantly enhance India's maritime strike capabilities. This is the first time two major surface combatants built by different Indian shipyards were inducted simultaneously, signalling a major leap in naval modernisation and defence self-reliance.
  • Udaygiri is built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai and Himgiri is constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata.

  • The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
  • Justice Chandrashekhar enrolled as an advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council in December 1993.
  • He was appointed as an additional judge of the Jharkhand High Court in January 2013 and became a permanent Judge in June 2014. He assumed the office of acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court in December 2023.
  • He was transferred from the Rajasthan High Court to the Bombay High Court in July this year (2025).
