  • Jaishankar's visit came at the invitation of Denis Manturov, the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

Patanjali Gets International-level Authorised Economic Operator Tier-2 Certificate

  • The World Customs Organisation (WCO) and the Ministry of Finance of the Government of India - Indian Customs awarded Patanjali the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Tier-2 certificate.
  • This certificate symbolises the highest standards of honesty, transparency and supply chain security in global trade.
  • Only a handful of companies among the top companies of India have this status, and in the FMCG sector, only a few companies have received this prestigious certificate. Now Patanjali's name has been added to this list in golden letters.
  • It is worth mentioning that with this AEO Tier-2 certificate, Patanjali Foods will get more than 28 types of international trade benefits along with Duty Deferred Payment, Bank Guarantee Waiver, Direct Port Delivery (DPD), 24x7 Clearance facility etc.

Asia Cup 2025: Gill Vice-captain

  • India Test captain Shubman Gill made his return to the T20I format and was appointed vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE.
  • The other notable inclusions in the squad were pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who both returned to the T20I side after last year's T20 World Cup title in Barbados.
  • Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh retained their place in the squad that featured in the five-match T20I series against England earlier this year.
  • The eight-team Asia Cup T20I tournament will be staged in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from September 9 to 28. Defending champions India are placed in Group 'A' alongside Pakistan, Oman and the UAE.

  • Iga Świątek, the Polish star, defeated Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 and claimed the 2025 women's Cincinnati Open title, her first hard-court trophy in over a year. The win not only marked her 24th career title but also sends a strong message to her rivals: she is ready for the U.S. Open.

Pakistan, Oman Pull Out of Asia Cup Hockey in Bihar

  • The upcoming Asia Cup Hockey in Rajgir, Bihar, has seen some changes, with Pakistan and Oman withdrawing from the tournament. Pakistan, traditionally one of the biggest names in Asian hockey, will not participate, paving the way for Bangladesh to make the cut. Oman too decided against participation, with Kazakhstan taking their place in the competition.
  • The event, scheduled from August 29 to September 7.

First Meeting of Consultative Committee for Ministry of Ayush

  • The first meeting of the newly constituted Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Ayush was held in New Delhi. The meeting facilitated meaningful dialogue between the Ministry and Members of Parliament, enabling review and consultation on key initiatives and future strategies in the field of Ayush.
  • The Government of India constituted a separate Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Ayush in May 2025, recognising the growing relevance of Ayush systems in India's healthcare framework.
  • Earlier, matters relating to the Ministry of Ayush were addressed under the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Press Registrar General Launches 'Press Sewa' Portal

  • Press Registrar General of India (PRGI) Yogesh Baweja launched the 'Press Sewa' portal, a digital single-window platform designed to streamline the registration process for newspapers and periodicals across India. The portal is part of the government's ongoing efforts to modernise media governance and improve ease of doing business for publishers.

UP's Jalalabad Renamed Parshurampuri

  • The Home Ministry gave approval regarding changing the name of Jalalabad in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. According to report, the name of Jalalabad has now been changed to Parshurampuri.

UK's Royal Navy Appoints Himachal Pradesh Cadet as First-ever Hindu Chaplain

  • The UK's Royal Navy appointed its first-ever Hindu chaplain, the first non-Christian to be appointed for the official role of offering spiritual support to fellow naval officers based on the tenets of Hinduism.
  • Bhanu Attri, originally from Himachal Pradesh, took over his new role after undergoing a somewhat different course from other Navy cadets.
  • He went through six weeks of officer instruction, including sea survival with four weeks at sea aboard the warship HMS Iron Duke, and three weeks focused on the role of a military chaplain.

Akshay Urja Day

  • Akshay Urja Day or Akshay Urja Diwas is celebrated on August 20 each year. It is a campaign that is undertaken to raise awareness about the advantages of renewable energy. The occasion also emphasises on how to use energy resources efficiently in India.
  • The history of Akshay Urja Day traces back to the early 2000s, when the Indian government recognised the urgent need to address environmental concerns and promote sustainable energy solutions.
  • The day was established by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in 2004 accompanied by the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The event was organised in New Delhi.

Sadbhavna Diwas

  • The birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, which falls on August 20, is celebrated each year as Sadbhavana Diwas. Rajiv Gandhi was India's Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989. This day, which translates to "Harmony Day," serves as a reminder of his vision for a prosperous, united, and peaceful India.
  • Following Rajiv Gandhi's assassination in 1991, Sadbhavana Diwas was first observed on August 20, 1992.

Salah Wins PFA Player of the Year Award

  • Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was named the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year, with the Egyptian becoming the first player to win the award three times.
  • Salah, who joined Liverpool in 2017, was the Premier League's top scorer last season, with his 29 goals, along with 18 assists, playing a key role in the club winning the league title, finishing 10 points ahead of runners-up Arsenal.
  • Salah had already clinched the Premier League Player of the Season award, the Golden Boot for most goals scored and the Playmaker award for most assists, making him the first player to win all three awards in the same season.

India's First Private Mathematics Research Institute Comes in Mumbai

  • India's first privately funded mathematics research institute was launched in Mumbai. The Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI) was inaugurated in the presence of global dignitaries from the field of mathematics, including Dr. Manjul Bhargava, the first Indian-origin winner of the Fields Medal.
  • The Lodha Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Lodha Group, has backed the initiative with a major endowment. Last year (2024), the Lodha family donated about Rs. 20,000 crore to the foundation to support education and research initiatives. The LMSI is the first project to come from this donation.
  • The institute will be headed by Dr. V Kumar Murty, a mathematician with significant contributions to number theory and arithmetic geometry. He had earlier served as director of the Fields Institute and professor at the University of Toronto.

Lok Sabha Passes Bill to Establish IIM Guwahati in Assam

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. The move represents a major stride in expanding premier management education to the north-eastern region of India, fulfilling a long-standing regional demand.
