UK Trade Envoy Resigns over Northern Cyprus Visit

  • Labour MP Afzal Khan resigned as the UK's trade envoy to Turkey following criticism of his visit last week to the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

  • NTPC Limited, India's largest power producer, became the first public sector company in the country's power industry to implement a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) aligned with ISO 22301:2019, the international benchmark for business continuity management systems (BCMS).
  • NTPC said the plan would strengthen its ability to maintain uninterrupted power generation and supply in the face of unexpected events.

ISRO Inaugurates Space Laboratory in Remote Arunachal Pradesh District

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) inaugurated a state-of-the-art space laboratory at Mechuka Government Higher Secondary School in the remote Shi-Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh. The initiative, launched in collaboration with the Muskaan Foundation, was formally inaugurated by Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona in August 2025.

India Hosts 10th AITIGA Review Meeting in New Delhi

  • India hosted the 10th Meeting of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) Joint Committee and related sessions at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi. The gathering brought together delegates from all ten ASEAN member states to push forward the review of the 14-year-old trade pact.
  • The meetings, held in a hybrid format, were co-chaired by Nitin Kumar Yadav, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, and Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, Deputy Secretary General (Trade), Ministry of Investment, Trade & Industry, Malaysia.
  • Representatives from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam attended.
  • At the heart of the discussions was the ongoing review of AITIGA, aimed at improving its effectiveness, accessibility, and trade facilitation capabilities. This review builds on the progress from eight previous rounds of negotiations.

Indian Naval Ships in Colombo Taking Part in Bilateral Exercise

  • Indian naval ships 'Rana' and 'Jyoti' are in Colombo participating in Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise (SLINEX) between the two navies that aims at enhancing interoperability and maritime cooperation.
  • Conceptualised in 2005, Sri Lanka-India Naval Exercise (SLINEX) is a bilateral exercise that has strengthened maritime cooperation between the two nations over two decades.
  • The exercise is being conducted in two phases - the harbour phase in Colombo from August 14-16 followed by the sea phase from August 17-18.

The Centre Launches the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY)

  • The central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the employment incentive scheme Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY). Speaking from the ramparts of Red Fort in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the employment scheme, offers financial support to both first-time job employees and the employers. The scheme will be operated by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). As per the government announcement, the scheme has a budget total budget outlay of Rs. 99,446 crore and aims to create over 3.5 crore jobs in two years.

  • The division bench will hear key matters including Public Interest Litigation petitions, civil writ petitions, first appeals, family court appeals, contempt appeals, and other civil and criminal cases within its jurisdiction. The bench will cater to cases from Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts.
