DPIIT Signs MoU with Hero MotoCorp to Support and Scale Early-Stage Start-ups

  • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hero MotoCorp Limited to support and scale early-stage start-ups and entrepreneurs through its innovation accelerator programme 'Hero For Start-ups'.
  • Under the Start-up India initiative, DPIIT and Hero MotoCorp will jointly support start-ups working in areas related to the future of mobility, clean technology and deep technology. The partnership will provide selected start-ups with exclusive access to Hero MotoCorp's world-class research and development facilities in Germany and India. Shortlisted start-ups will also have the opportunity to work on paid Proofs of Concept (PoCs), enabling successful pilots and unlocking valuable market exposure to accelerate the growth and visibility of their innovations.

India's First Drone-AI Powered Artificial Rain Experiment Launched in Jaipur

  • For the first time in India, cloud seeding technology enhanced with drones and artificial intelligence (AI) was used to trigger artificial rain. The pilot project took place in the Ramgarh Dam area of Jaipur, Rajasthan, with hopes of reviving the 129-year-old reservoir that has been dry for the past two decades and has not filled to capacity since 1981. The initiative is a joint effort between GenX AI, an India-US-based technology company, and the Rajasthan Government.

India Finishes with 27 Medals in Asia U19 & U22 Boxing Championships 2025

  • With a gold in the women's 80+ kg category, Ritika concluded team India's campaign at the Asian U19 & U22 Boxing Championships 2025 with a total of 27 medals, across both the age groups in Bangkok.

International Youth Day

  • International Youth Day is observed on August 12 every year. It is celebrated to mark the contributions of the youth in the development of society alongside understanding the challenges faced by them.
  • The United Nations declared in 1999 that August 12 would be the annual International Youth Day. It was based on a suggestion to the UN General Assembly made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon on December 17, 1999. It was first celebrated on August 12, 2000, and since then, the day has been used to educate the general public.
  • The theme of International Youth Day 2025 is 'Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond'.

World Elephant Day

  • World Elephant Day is celebrated every year on August 12 to raise global awareness about the protection and preservation of elephants.

Tamil Nadu Rolls the "Chief Minister's Thayumanavar Scheme

  • The Tamil Nadu government rolled out the 'Chief Minister's Thayumanavar Scheme' to deliver ration items at the doorsteps of over 21 lakh beneficiaries, an initiative CM M. K. Stalin described as close to his heart since it would benefit senior citizens aged over 70 years and differently abled persons.
  • The scheme was formulated keeping in mind the difficulties faced by the said group of ration card holders to access fair price shops and the additional expense of Rs. 30.16 crore incurred in the rollout was the government's life-saving responsibility towards the public.

The Union Cabinet Approves the MERITE Scheme

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, approved the proposal for implementation of the 'Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education' (MERITE) Scheme in 275 technical institutions comprising 175 engineering institutions and 100 polytechnics. The objective of the scheme is to improve the quality, equity and governance in technical education covering all States/UTs by implementing interventions aligned with the National Educational Policy-2020 (NEP-2020).
  • It is a 'Central Sector Scheme' with total financial implication of Rs. 4200 crore for a period from 2025-26 to 2029-30. Out of Rs. 4200 crore, there will be an external assistance of Rs. 2100 crore from World Bank as loan.

Tamil Nadu Unveils State Education Policy, Retains Two-Language System, Rejects NEP

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin formally unveiled the State Education Policy (SEP), crafted as a state-specific alternative to the National Education Policy (NEP). The announcement took place at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium in Kotturpuram, marking the culmination of over a year's work by a 14-member committee led by retired Justice Murugesan.
  • The policy reaffirms Tamil Nadu's two-language system, rejects NEP's three-language formula, and outlines student-friendly reforms aimed at promoting inclusivity, science, and technology education.

Maharashtra Implements 'Disha Abhiyan' for Uniform Education of Students with Intellectual Disabilities

  • Maharashtra took a pioneering step in inclusive education by successfully implementing 'Disha Abhiyan', a programme designed to provide uniform and quality education for students with intellectual disabilities. Announcing the initiative, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that it has already been rolled out across 453 special schools in the state.
  • Maharashtra is the first state in the country to adopt a state-wide, standardised curriculum tailored for students with intellectual disabilities. Developed by the Jai Vakil Foundation and approved by the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID), this initiative ensures that students across all special schools receive consistent, research-based learning experiences.

Tribal School Dropouts Soar 5x in 4 Years: Chhattisgarh, Odisha top the list

  • In a concerning development highlighting challenges in tribal education, dropout rates among students in Eklaavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) surged nearly five times over the past four years.
  • According to official data provided by Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey, the number of tribal school dropouts increased sharply, reflecting growing issues within the schooling system catering to tribal communities.
  • The number of student dropouts from Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) jumped to 552 in 2024-25, from just 111 in 2021-22, according to official data reports.
  • The highest numbers were seen from Chhattisgarh (88), Odisha (87), and Madhya Pradesh (71).
