Italy Gives Final Approval for World's Longest Suspension Bridge to Sicily

  • The Italian government gave the final approval for the construction of a multibillion-euro bridge linking Sicily to the mainland, a project that has been a topic of debate since at least the late 1960s but has been held back.
  • The government has set aside €13.5bn to build what would be the world's longest suspension bridge, connecting the island of Sicily to the region of Calabria, on the tip of Italy's boot.
  • The designers claim the bridge – which is due to be built on one of the most seismically active areas in the Mediterranean – will be able to withstand earthquakes.

Paytm Goes China-Free as Antfin Fully Exits

  • In a significant development for India's digital economy and investor sentiment, Jack Ma's Antfin, the Chinese affiliate of Ant Group, completely exited Paytm's parent company One97 Communications. The move eliminates all Chinese ownership from the fintech major, marking a milestone for the company and potentially widening its investor base. Antfin sold its entire 5.84% stake—equivalent to 37.3 million shares—in large bulk deals worth around Rs. 3,803 crore.

IndusInd Bank Appoints Rajiv Anand as New Managing Director and CEO

  • IndusInd Bank announced the appointment of Rajiv Anand as its new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Anand's tenure will begin on August 25, 2025, and continue until August 24, 2028, subject to shareholder approval at the bank's forthcoming general meeting.
  • The Board of Directors at IndusInd Bank approved the appointment of Rajiv Anand as an Additional Director, designated specifically in the category of MD & CEO for a term of three years.
  • Rajiv Anand brings significant leadership experience from his prior roles at Axis Bank, India's third-largest private sector bank, Deputy Managing Director, Axis Bank and Led Axis Bank's Wholesale Banking Division, significantly growing its corporate business.

IDFC FIRST Bank Launches RemitFIRST2India

  • IDFC FIRST Bank launched RemitFIRST2India, a next-generation digital remittance platform that allows Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to send money to their families in India quickly, securely, and with zero transfer fees. NRI customers of IDFC FIRST Bank can simply log-in to the Mobile Banking App and make the transaction. For non-IDFC FIRST Bank NRI users, the platform offers a simple, paperless onboarding journey through a dedicated web-portal.
  • RemitFIRST2 India has been launched in partnership with SingX, a leading remittance provider licensed by Monetary Authority of Singapore, to offer a fully compliant and seamless cross-border payment experience.

Asteroid Named after Astrophysicist Malhar Kendurkar

  • Astrophysicist Malhar Kendurkar, who was born and raised in Nagpur's posh Dhantoli area, was honoured with a rare celestial tag — an asteroid was officially named after his surname.
  • Asteroid 541801 Kendurkar, originally discovered in 2004 by Canadian astronomer Dave Balam, now carries Kendurkar's surname, a nod to his contributions to time-domain astrophysics and international astronomy collaborations.
  • The Kendurkar asteroid is a main belt object orbiting between Mars and Jupiter — roughly 750m in diameter, with a total of 285 observations recorded globally.

Seventeen Indian Athletes Compete in World Games 2025

  • For the World Games 2025, which are being held in Chengdu, China, from August 7-17, India has sent a squad of 17 members.
  • This is the 12th edition of the World Games, a quadrennial competition for sports not included in the Olympics.
  • Running since 1981, the multi-sport event typically takes place a year after the Olympics. The 2025 World Games feature 253 medal events across 34 sports and 60 disciplines, with powerboating and cheerleading making their debuts at the quadrennial meet.

Cricket Australia Signs New Shirt Deal with Westpac

  • Cricket Australia officially announced a new four-year deal with Australia's oldest bank, Westpac, to become the principal partner of the cricket team, bringing an end to Commonwealth Bank's 37-year sponsorship.
  • The partnership will commence with the upcoming series against India and South Africa. This agreement covers all formats of the game in Australia - Test, One-Day Internationals, and T20s, as well as support for Australia A and the under-19 national teams.
  • Westpac's logo, a red coloured 'W', will now feature on the shirts of both Australia's men's and women's sides for all the international matches played by the Aussies. The bank has also become the official sponsor for the Big Bash League, which is played in Australia.

Sandeep Arya India's Next Ambassador to Bhutan

  • India appointed Sandeep Arya, a 1994-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as the next Ambassador of India to Bhutan, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated.
  • Earlier, Arya assumed charge as the Ambassador of India to Vietnam in October 2022.
  • He was Additional Secretary (Disarmament & International Security Affairs) and Joint Secretary (Europe West/AD) at the MEA between 2019 and 2022.

PM inaugurates Kartavya Bhavan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kartavya Bhavan in Delhi in a gala affair as part of the government's ambitious project to bring central ministries and departments under one roof for seamless functioning.
  • Kartavya Bhavan-3, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, is the first of the several upcoming Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings as part of the larger Central Vista project.
  • The state-of-the-art building, consisting of swanky conference rooms, modern amenities and CCTVs, will house the offices of the ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, MSMEs, DoPT, Petroleum and Natural Gas.
  • The Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) will also have his office in the building, which is spread over 1.5 lakh sq metres.

Delhi Assembly Becomes India's First Legislature to Run Entirely on Solar Power

  • The Delhi Legislative Assembly became the first legislature in the country to be powered entirely by solar energy, following the commissioning of a 500-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant.
  • Alongside this, the Assembly launched the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), marking a shift towards paperless legislative functioning.
  • The two initiatives were inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, who called the Assembly's transition a model for sustainable and digital governance.

Inaugural India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue Held in New Delhi

  • The inaugural edition of India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue was held in New Delhi to discuss security perspectives and further bolster bilateral cooperation. The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), Ministry of Defence, India Amitabh Prasad and Head of International Branch, Ministry of Defence, New Zealand Kathleen Pearce.
  • Both nations expressed satisfaction at the ongoing defence cooperation and identified means to enhance the existing areas of collaboration, especially in the fields of training, capability building, defence industry, maritime security and multinational cooperation.
  • The Indian side complimented New Zealand for its successful command of CTF-150 in which five Indian Navy personnel were also deputed as staff. Both sides also discussed ways to build up ongoing White Shipping Information Exchange towards enhancement of information sharing.
  • The India-New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue was constituted under an MoU signed between the two countries in March 2025.

National Handloom Day

  • National Handloom Day is observed on August 7 every year. This day recognises the importance of handloom weavers to the nation's economy and culture. India's handloom sector boasts a rich cultural heritage. India's artisan community has kept traditional crafts alive by reimagining them in fresh, contemporary styles that appeal to today's consumers.
  • The Swadeshi Movement launched on August 7, 1905 had encouraged indigenous industries and in particular handloom weavers. In 2015, the Government of India declared August 7 as the National Handloom Day, commemorating the momentous occasion.
  • The first National Handloom Day was celebrated on August 7, 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai.
  • The theme for National Handloom Day 2025 is 'Handlooms – Empowering Women, Empowering the Nation'.

Assam CM Launches 'Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina 2.0 Scheme

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina 2.0 scheme, a flagship initiative aimed at promoting girls' enrolment in higher education through monthly financial assistance. The scheme was formally launched at the Birinchi Kumar Barua Auditorium, Gauhati University.
  • The Nijut Moina scheme is designed to empower girls and reduce dropout rates by providing consistent financial support, enabling them to pursue education from the Higher Secondary (HS) level to postgraduate (PG) studies. The scheme is inclusive—girls from all families, regardless of economic background, are eligible to benefit.

  • The Indian Institute of Management Udaipur (IIM Udaipur) announced the launch of a new Executive Program in Product Management (EPPM) and the commencement of admissions for the next cohort of its Senior Management Program (SMP). Both programmes are designed for working professionals and are offered in an executive education format.
  • Both the Executive Program in Product Management and the Senior Management Program are delivered through a combination of live online sessions and campus modules. This hybrid model is intended to provide flexibility to working professionals while maintaining in-person engagement. IIM Udaipur has partnered with TeamLease EdTech to support the delivery of the programmes and to provide technical and learner support throughout the duration of the courses.
