India Emerges as Top Smartphone Supplier to US

  • According to Canalys, India emerged as the largest manufacturing hub for smartphones shipped into the US for the first time in Q2, 2025, as China's share shrunk amid tariff negotiations.
  • The research from Canalys (now part of Omdia) revealed that United States smartphone shipments grew 1 per cent in the second quarter of the current calendar year as vendors continued to frontload device inventories amid tariff concerns.

Indian Men's Football Team to Play CAFA Nations Cup

  • India's senior men's national football team will participate in the 2025 Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup as part of their preparations for the final round of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers. The tournament is scheduled to be held from August 31 to September 8 at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan.
  • India received an invitation to take part in the tournament after Malaysia withdrew due to logistical challenges and the unavailability of players. The tournament falls outside the official FIFA calendar.

100 Years of Indian Hockey: HI Announces Enhanced Grants and Nationwide Festival

  • As Indian hockey marks its glorious 100-year journey, Hockey India (HI) announced landmark initiatives to boost the sport's growth and celebrate its legacy. At the 15th Hockey India Congress held in Mahabalipuram on July 27, 2025, HI unveiled a major increase in financial grants for national and grassroots-level tournaments and announced a nationwide hockey festival scheduled for November 7, 2025.
  • In a bid to strengthen infrastructure and expand participation, Hockey India will now allocate Rs. 70 lakh each for the senior men's and senior women's National Championships. For the Junior and Sub-Junior categories, both men and women, Rs. 30 lakh each will be provided to ensure quality competitions and better exposure for young athletes.

Indian Coast Guard Gets Fast Patrol Vessel 'Atal'

  • The Indian Coast Guard's sixth indigenously built Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), 'Atal', was launched at Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), Goa. The launch marked a significant milestone in India's pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing. 'Atal' enhances the Indian Coast Guard's operational capabilities in coastal security, anti-smuggling efforts, and maritime rescue operations.

Indian Navy Participates in SIMBEX

  • The Indian Navy is participating in the 32nd edition of SIMBEX (Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise) in Singapore, continuing a long-standing tradition of maritime cooperation with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). This exercise reflects India's growing naval engagements in Southeast Asia under its Act East Policy and Vision SAGAR, aligning defence and diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific.
  • SIMBEX began in 1994 and is one of India's longest uninterrupted naval bilateral exercises. It was originally named Exercise Lion King.
  • The 32nd edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) 2025 is taking place from July 28 to August 2, 2025.

Eminent Economist Lord Megnadh Desai Passes Away

  • Renowned economist, author, and member of the UK House of Lords, Lord Meghnad Desai passed away at the age of 85, leaving behind a rich legacy of scholarship, public service, and enduring contributions to India-UK relations.

  • The IIM-Calcutta did not have a regular full-term director for nearly two years. The appointment of a full-time director comes in the wake of the arrest of a second-year student in a rape case.
  • Before becoming the Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow University, Rai was a management professor at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He also held several positions on various high-level committees and panels.
