Piyush Chawla Retires from Professional Cricket

  • Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, a member of India's 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squads, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Chawla represented India in three Tests, 7 T20Is and 25 ODIS, picking up 43 wickets across the three formats. Chawla is also the joint third-highest wicket-taker in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, having taken 192 scalps in 192 matches, and won one title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2014.

Canada's First Astronaut Marc Garneau Dies

  • Marc Garneau, the first Canadian in space and a former Foreign Minister died. He was 76.
  • An electrical engineer and former Royal Canadian Navy officer, he became the first Canadian in space when he flew aboard the US space shuttle in 1984. Garneau made two other trips to space.
  • Garneau served in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Transport Minister.

New Category Introduced Under National e-Governance Awards 2025

  • In a move to strengthen grassroots governance, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, in collaboration with the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, introduced a dedicated category under the National Awards for e-Governance (NAeG) 2025 to recognise outstanding digital initiatives by Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). A first-of-its-kind recognition for PRIs, a new award category titled 'Grassroots Level Initiatives for Deepening Service Delivery at Gram Panchayats or Equivalent Traditional Local Bodies' was introduced to honour exemplary digital initiatives by Panchayats. This category aims to acknowledge the role of Gram Panchayats in enhancing ease of living and improving the quality of life through effective, transparent and citizen-centric service delivery.
  • After a rigorous multi-tier evaluation at the Block, District, State, and National levels, four Gram Panchayats emerged as winners from over 1.45 lakh entries received from 26 States and Union Territories under the newly introduced award category.

SSC Launches Mobile-Based Application Process for Government Job Aspirants

  • In a big push towards making government job applications easier and more accessible, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) launched a fully upgraded version of its mySSC mobile app. The app, now live, allows candidates -- especially those from rural areas -- to fill and submit their applications for SSC exams entirely through their mobile phones.
  • Candidates can now complete the full application process on the app, including Aadhaar-based OTP and face authentication.
  • The app, developed in partnership with Cubastion Consulting, is part of a broader effort to make the entire SSC recruitment cycle—from registration to final selection—more secure, transparent, and user-friendly.

Eight Hundred-Year-Old Pandya Era Shiva Temple Unearthed in Tamil Nadu

  • An important archaeological discovery was made in Udampatti village of Melur taluk, Tamil Nadu, where the foundation of an 800-year-old Shiva temple belonging to the later Pandya period was unearthed. Although only the stone base remains, the site is of major historical interest due to Tamil inscriptions dating back to 1217-1218 CE that reveal the temple's name—Thennavanisvaram—and its financially independent status. This find sheds light on the cultural, architectural, and socio-economic dynamics of the Pandya era.
  • The discovery also reveals that the current village was once known as Attur, providing critical historical and linguistic data for researchers.
