  • A regional association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) is set to hold a three-day summit Tuesday with China and six Gulf countries in what officials called an effort to bolster economic resilience as they grapple with global volatility and US tariffs. 
  • Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, opening a summit in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur among the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council, said a stronger ASEAN-GCC relationship would be key to enhancing interregional collaboration, building resilience and securing sustainable prosperity.

RBI Transfers Record Rs. 2.69 Lakh Crore Surplus to Centre for FY25

  • In a landmark fiscal development, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved a record surplus transfer of Rs. 2.69 lakh crore to the Central Government for the financial year 2024-25. The decision, taken during the 616th meeting of the Central Board of Directors chaired by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, reflects strong financial performance and macroeconomic stability. 
  • The transfer follows a hike in the Contingent Risk Buffer (CRB) to 7.5%, under the revised Economic Capital Framework (ECF).

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait Discover Oil in Neutral Zone After 5 Years

  • In a major development that could bolster global energy supply and Gulf cooperation, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have announced a significant oil discovery in the neutral zone, specifically in the North Wafra Wara-Burgan field. 
  • This marks the first such discovery since the resumption of production in 2020, with the new well yielding over 500 barrels of crude oil per day. 
  • The find is expected to enhance both countries' status as reliable energy exporters and showcase their continued leadership in exploration and production efforts.

LIC Creates History with Guinness World Record in Insurance Sales

  • In a historic achievement, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), India's largest public sector life insurer, has been awarded a Guinness World Record for selling the highest number of life insurance policies in a single day. 
  • On January 20, 2025, LIC sold a staggering 588,107 life insurance policies across the country through its massive agent network, setting a global benchmark in life insurance sales within a 24-hour period.
  • The LIC's record-setting sales feat was recently acknowledged by the Guinness World Records on May 25, 2025. 
  • This recognition marks a milestone moment for India's insurance sector and reaffirms LIC's dominant presence and deep penetration in the Indian financial landscape.

  • Famed Nepalese Sherpa guide Kami Rita on Tuesday (May 27, 2025) scaled Mount Everest for the 31st time, breaking his own record for the most successful ascents of the world's highest mountain.
  • The 55-year-old climber leading stood atop the 8,849-meter summit at around 4 a.m. under stable weather conditions, according to Mingma Sherpa, chairman of Seven Summit Treks, the expedition organiser.

University of Liverpool to open campus in Bengaluru; admission from next year

  • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presided over the Letter of Intent (LoI) handover ceremony to the University of Liverpool on May 26, 2025 in New Delhi.
  • This is the second foreign university to be issued an LoI under the UGC (Setting up and operation of campuses of foreign higher educational institutions in India) Regulations, 2023.
  • The inaugural cohort of undergraduate and postgraduate students will join the university in August 2026, initially offering programmes in business management, accounting and finance, computer science, and biomedical sciences.

SRM Institute of Science and Technology signs MoU with Officers Training Academy

  • To provide specialised training to officer cadets with a diploma programme in Information and Technology and Cyber Security, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Officers Training Academy (OTA). The MoU was signed with OTA, Chennai, as a mark of academic and strategic collaboration. 
  • The collaboration is designed to empower cadets with cutting-edge knowledge in electronic and AI-enabled information warfare, aligning with the evolving landscape of modern defense operations," according to a press release.

PM Modi Hails CBSE'S initiative of installing 'Sugar Boards' in schools

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the recent CBSE directive mandating schools affiliated with the board across the country to install 'Sugar Boards' to educate students about the risks of excessive sugar consumption.
  • "You must have seen blackboards in schools, but now sugar boards are also being installed—not blackboards, but sugar boards," the Prime Minister said during the 122nd episode of his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' address to the nation.
  • The initiative by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), PM Modi said, is aimed at making children aware of their sugar intake and helping them choose healthier options.
