U.S. President Donald Trump announced the removal of all sanctions on Syria during his visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy toward the war-torn country. The decision aims to support Syria's new transitional government and pave the way for stabilisation and peace after years of conflict, civil war, and international isolation. This development came after decades of sanctions imposed due to Syria's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism and ongoing human rights violations.
ReNew Power to Build India's Largest RE Complex in Andhra Pradesh
In a major push to India's renewable energy ambitions, ReNew Power announced the setting up of the country's largest single-site Renewable Energy (RE) complex at Bethapalle village in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. With a planned investment of Rs. 22,000 crore, the mega project was inaugurated on May 16, 2025, and will be a milestone in strengthening India's clean energy infrastructure.
This project also highlights the implementation of Andhra Pradesh's Integrated Clean Energy Policy (ICEP), introduced in October 2024.
Canara and Union Bank Unveil Tailored Deposit Products to Boost Mobilisation
State-owned Canara Bank and Union Bank of India announced special products to boost resource mobilisation.
It came amid slowing deposit growth, which fell to 10.3 per cent in the financial year 2024-25 (FY25) from 13.5 per cent in FY24. Most public sector banks have projected deposit growth of 9-11 per cent for the current financial year.
Under the scheme, Union Bank will offer 6.75 per cent for deposits of 375 days, for a minimum deposit of Rs. 10 lakh, up to Rs. 3 crore. The scheme includes a 375-day Super Top-up Health Insurance cover, offering a sum insured of Rs. 5 lakh with cashless hospitalisation facilities.
Bengaluru-based Canara Bank launched Canara TruEdge, a current account and savings account product, to deliver enhanced customer segmentation and provide solutions tailored to their specific operational and financial works.
The product offers a flexible benefit system like charge waivers and concessions which is linked to the previous month's Monthly Average Balance (MAB).
Bhawna Agarwal Appointed as Senior Vice President and MD of HPE India
In a leadership announcement, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) appointed Bhawna Agarwal as the new Senior Vice President (SVP) and Managing Director (MD) for its India operations. The transition is effective immediately.
Agarwal will report directly to Heiko Meyer, Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer at HPE, and will be responsible for leading HPE's business strategy and operations across one of its most critical international markets.
Agarwal assumed the role from Som Satsangi, a highly respected industry figure who has served HPE for over 27 years. Satsangi took over as Managing Director of HPE India in 2016 and has been instrumental in expanding the company's local footprint across enterprise IT, cloud services, and digital infrastructure.
Agarwal has more than 25 years of experience across digital start-ups, media organisations, and consumer technology companies.

L. R. Srihar Becomes India's 86th Chess Grandmaster
India earned its 86th chess Grandmaster, as L. R. Srihari from Chennai secured his third and final Grandmaster norm at the Asian Individual Men's Chess Championship held in Al-Ain, UAE. With this feat, India continues to solidify its status as a rising chess powerhouse.
Srihari's confirmation as a Grandmaster came 368 days after India's 85th GM title was achieved by P. Shyaamnikhil.
Central Government Appoints Solicitor General Tushar Mehta-led Team for the 26/11 Trial
The Central government appointed a team of special public prosecutors (SPPs), headed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, to conduct the trial in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case.
Pakistani-origin Canadian-American, Tahawwur Rana, is an accused in the case, and he was extradited to India from the United States last month.
Apart from Mehta, Additional Solicitor General S. V. Raju and senior advocates Dayan Krishnan and Narender Mann are part of the prosecutorial team.
They will represent the National Investigation Agency (NIA) before the special courts at Delhi, the High Court of Delhi and the Supreme Court of India.
India-EU Join Hands to Find Innovative Research Solutions to Marine Plastic Litter and Waste to Hydrogen
India and the European Union (EU) launched two major research and innovation initiatives under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC). The TTC was established in 2022, by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen to strengthen the bilateral partnership on trade and technology. With a joint investment of Rs. 391 crore, the initiatives focus on two coordinated calls in the areas of Marine Plastic Litter (MPL) and Waste to Green Hydrogen (W2GH), co-funded by Horizon Europe—the EU's research and innovation framework programme—and the Government of India.
AVNL and BEL Forge Partnership for Next-Generation Electronic System in Wheeled Armour Vehicles
In a significant step toward bolstering India's indigenous defence capabilities, Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) signed a teaming agreement to jointly develop advanced electronic devices for wheeled armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs). The agreement, formalised marks a deepening collaboration between two of India's premier defence public sector undertakings (PSUs), aligning with the nation's Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and Make in India initiatives. The origin of the International Day of Light can be traced back to 2015, when the United Nations observed the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) to raise awareness of the achievements of light science and its applications worldwide.
Following the success of IYL 2015, the UNESCO Executive Board adopted a resolution that supported the notion of an International Day of Light on September 19, 2016. The first-ever IDL was held on May 16, 2018.

National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi) announced the appointment of former Chief Justice of India, D. Y. Chandrachud, as a Distinguished Professor.
As part of this collaboration, NLU Delhi will establish a Centre for Constitutional Studies, with Justice Chandrachud at the helm of its research direction.
The collaboration with NLU Delhi is expected to increase NLU Delhi's teaching and research initiatives and particularly contribute to constitutional law.
In addition, NLU Delhi will launch a lecture series titled, 'In the Spirit of Justice: The DYC Distinguished Lecture Series' which is set to begin July 2025 onwards.
Uttarakhand: Pushkar Kumbh at Keshav Prayag after 12 Years
The Pushkar Kumbh was held at Keshav Prayag, located in the border village of Mana in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand after 12 years. According to authorities, there has been a significant increase in the movement of pilgrims to both Badrinath Dham and Mana village.
According to religious tradition, when the planet Jupiter enters the Gemini sign once in 12 years, the Pushkar Kumbh is held at Keshav Prayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Saraswati Rivers in Mana village. This event is primarily attended by devotees of the Vaishnavite tradition from South India.
