India Showcases SVAMITVA Scheme at World Bank Land Conference 2025
India is leading the global conversation on digital land reforms and climate-aligned governance at the World Bank Land Conference 2025, being held from May 5 to 8 at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C., United States.
A high-level Indian delegation, led by Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR), is presenting the country's flagship SVAMITVA Scheme (Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) and Gram Manchitra platform during the international conference, which is being attended by global policymakers, experts, and development partners.
This year's (2025) conference, themed 'Securing Land Tenure and Access for Climate Action: Moving from Awareness to Action', aims to examine strategies for secure land tenure, the modernisation of land administration, and climate-resilient planning.
Romanian PM Resigns and Pulls Out of Coalition
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigned and his Social Democrat Party is to leave the government after a right-wing nationalist candidate won the first round of the presidential election.
George Simion, a eurosceptic who has promised to put Romania first, won 40.9% vote and is expected to win a run-off vote on 18 May.
Ciolacu had only come to power in a pro-EU coalition after elections in 2024.

India's First Mortgage Backed Pass through Certificates Listed on the National Stock Exchange
M. Nagaraju, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance listed India's first Mortgage backed Pass Through Certificates (PTC) structured by RMBS Development Company Limited on the National stock Exchange. The listing ceremony was attended by several Heads of Banks, Housing Finance Companies and other financial institutions.
These PTCs are backed by pool of housing loans originated by LIC Housing Finance Limited.
The final maturity of the PTC issued will be nearly twenty years and the coupon is 7.26% per annum. The rating of the Instrument is AAA(SO) by CRISIL and CARE Ratings. These PTCs are issued in demat form and are transferable. As the PTC is listed on a stock exchange, they can be traded in the secondary market.
A joint venture of Shell, Reliance Industries Ltd and ONGC successfully completed India's first offshore facilities decommissioning project with the safe removal of installations on the mid and south Tapti gas field in the Arabian Sea.
The Tapti field, lying 160 km north-west of Mumbai, stopped producing in 2016. Certain facilities at the mid and south Tapti fields, known as the Tapti Part A Facilities were handed over to state-owned ONGC while the remaining facilities, which included 38 wells, 5 wellhead platforms and four pipelines, known as Tapti Part B Facilities were abandoned by the joint venture.

India Cuts Chenab River Flow to Pakistan through Salal and Baglihar Dams
India stopped the flow of water from the Chenab River. The Indian government has shut down the gates of both the Baglihar and Salal Dams, which regulate the Chenab's flow into Pakistan.
The Salal Dam, located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, has seen all its gates closed.
The Baglihar Dam is located in Jammu and Kashmir, in the Ramban district. It is part of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project on the Chenab River.
Aviation Ministry Gives In-Principle Nod for Airports in Rajasthan, Odisha
The civil aviation ministry granted in-principle approval for greenfield airports in Rajasthan's Kota and Puri in Odisha.
The proposed airport will not only serve Kota city, known as a major educational and industrial hub, but will also cater to the growing population and economic activity in the Hadoti region.

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully undertook combat firing (with reduced explosive) of the indigenously designed and developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM). The system is an advanced underwater naval mine developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories - High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh.
K. V. Rabia, Padma Shri awardee and a literacy activist from Vellilakad, Tirurangadi, Kerala who overcame serious physical challenges such as polio, cancer and spinal cord injury and made her mark in the field of social service, passed away at the age of 59.
In 2022, she was honoured with the Padma Shri for her contributions to the field of social service. Additionally, she was awarded the National Youth Award in 1993. She has received many honours, including the International Award, the Murimathil Bava Award, the Seethi Sahib Memorial Award (2010), the Kannaki Stree Shakti Puraskar (1999), and the Vanitha Ratnam Award from the state government in 2014.

The Ministry of Education notified that the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was designated as the national coordinator for Institutions of National Importance (INIs) on the SWAYAM platform. The decision was approved during the 26th meeting of the SWAYAM Board. Ashutosh Mohan of the Banaras Hindu University's Institute of Management Studies, was designated as the national coordinator for SWAYAM.
The University will now oversee the development and quality of online courses developed by more than 160 Institutes of National Importance (INIs) nationwide, including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Central Universities.

In a significant step towards transparency and boosting public confidence in the judiciary, the Supreme Court has uploaded the assets and liabilities of the Judges on its website.
This is the first time in history that the assets' declarations of the Supreme Court Judges were made public. Presently, the declarations of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and twenty other judges, including the three judges who are next in line to be the CJI in the near future, were uploaded.
