US Signs Historic Deal That Gives It Access to Ukraine's Natural Resources

  • Ukraine and the US signed a deal heavily promoted by US President Donald Trump that will give the United States preferential access to new Ukrainian minerals deals and fund investment in Ukraine's reconstruction.
  • The two countries signed the accord in Washington after months of negotiations.
  • The agreement is central to Kyiv's efforts to mend ties with Trump and the White House, which frayed after he took office in January. Ukrainian officials have hoped that the deal would ensure continued US support for Ukraine's defence against Russia.

Governor of Telangana Inaugurates Babuji Vanam, the World's firSt Energy Transmission Garden

  • The Governor of Telangana inaugurated 'Babuji Vanam' in Hyderabad, the world's first energy transmission garden created in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, as a special commemorative legacy project.
  • The thematic garden is the first of its kind in the world, featuring forty species of trees that will absorb and radiate Pranahuti, the yogic transmission that nourishes the soul. A central water body in the garden depicts the origin of creation. The garden is meticulously designed to ensure that every drop of water is harvested.

Indian Oil Corporation to Import LNG under 5-year agreement with US-based Trafigura

  • Indian Oil Corporation, the country's largest refiner, signed a five-year deal with trading firm Trafigura to import liquefied natural gas (LNG).
  • Under the arrangement, Trafigura will deliver three to four LNG shipments in the current year, followed by six shipments annually beginning next year (2026).
  • The pricing structure for these imports will be tied to the US Henry Hub benchmark. India is aiming to increase its energy purchases from the United States to address trade imbalances with the world's largest economy, while traders are seeking to redirect some LNG originally destined for China toward India.

RBI Launches 3 Key Surveys for Monetary Policy Input

  • To fine-tune India's monetary policy based on real-time household sentiments, the RBI initiated three surveys: the Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH), the Urban Consumer Confidence Survey (UCCS), and the Rural Consumer Confidence Survey (RCCS). These tools are vital for assessing inflation trends, consumer confidence, and economic sentiment in both urban and rural India, helping the central bank make informed decisions.
  • The data from these surveys will serve as crucial inputs for the RBI's upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled from June 4–6, 2025.

Alok Joshi Appointed Chairman of National Security Advisory Board

  • The Union government revamped the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB). Alok Joshi, a former Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), was appointed as the new head of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB). Six more members were also inducted into the board.
  • The members include Former Western Air Commander Air Marshal P. M. Sinha, former Southern Army Commander Lieutenant General A. K. Singh, and Rear Admiral Monty Khanna, all retired military officers. Rajiv Ranjan Verma and Manmohan Singh are the two retired members of the Indian Police Service. B. Venkatesh Varma is a retired IFS officer in the seven-member board.
  • This decision came in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians, including one Nepalese national, and injured many.

Cabinet Backs Caste Count

  • The Union Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs approved the inclusion of a caste census in the upcoming national population census. The announcement was made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who emphasised that this exercise will be conducted in a "transparent manner" to preserve social harmony.

Rajnath Singh to Represent India at 80th Victory Day Event in Moscow

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will represent India at the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory Day to be held in Moscow on May 9.
  • President Vladimir Putin had invited Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the celebration in Moscow to watch the victory parade at the Red Square.
  • Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not be attending the celebrations that include a military parade in Moscow on May 9.

IAF Gets New Vice Chief, Tri-services New CISC, Army New Northern Army Commander

  • Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the strategically crucial Northern Command, following the retirement of Lieutenant General M. V. Suchindra Kumar.
  • Headquartered at Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, the Northern Command is tasked with operational responsibilities along both Pakistan and China borders, as well as counter-terrorism operations.
  • In the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari was appointed as Vice Chief, succeeding Air Marshal S. P. Dharkar, who superannuated.
  • The third top-level change was in the tri-services structure. Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, was appointed the new Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC). He replaced Lt Gen J. P. Mathew, who retired.

Maharashtra Day

  • Maharashtra Day, celebrated on May 1 every year, marks the creation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960. This was a pivotal moment in the region's history, signifying the culmination of a long struggle for a separate state for Marathi-speaking people. Maharashtra Day celebrates the linguistic and cultural identity of the Marathi people.
  • The Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti (United Maharashtra Committee) formed in 1956 became the driving force behind the movement. They advocated for a separate state encompassing Marathi-speaking regions that were then part of the Bombay State. This included present-day Maharashtra, parts of Karnataka, and the Belgaum region.
  • Following the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, the Bombay State was dissolved on linguistic lines. On May 1, 1960, the independent state of Maharashtra was officially formed, marking a momentous occasion in the region's history.

Gujarat Day

  • Gujarat celebrates its foundation on May 1. This auspicious occasion marks the establishment of the state after the bifurcation of the Bombay State in 1960. Gujarat is the country's ninth-largest state by population and fifth-largest by area.
  • Gujarat is known as the Jewel of the West. From the white sand dunes of Kutch to temple towns, the state is adorned with natural beauty. Gujarat also has a rich history with its soil bearing witness to ancient civilisations, trade routes and cultural exchanges.

International Labour Day

  • Every year on May 1, International Labour Day, also known as May Day, is celebrated across the world. This day serves as a tribute to the hardworking individuals whose dedication and sweat have shaped societies and economies across the globe.
  • The origins of International Labour Day can be traced back to the late 19th century labour movement in the United States. The date of May 1st was chosen to commemorate a nationwide strike for an eight-hour workday that commenced in 1886.

Commerce Ministry Plans to Extend RoDTEP Scheme beyond September 30

  • In what could provide confidence to Indian exporters grappling with an unpredictable global market, the government is set to extend the popular Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme beyond September 30, 2025 when it is scheduled to lapse.
  • The RoDTEP scheme, announced in January 2021, refunds embedded duties and taxes, such as VAT on fuel used in transportation, mandi tax and duty on electricity used during manufacturing of the exported items.

MNRE Minister Pralhad Joshi Launches Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme

  • Pralhad Joshi Minister of New and Renewable Energy launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI). He mentioned that the scheme is a foundational step towards creating a robust framework for certifying green hydrogen production and ensuring transparency, traceability, and market credibility.
  • While the scheme applies to companies that have bid for the government's incentives for the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, it leaves out the exporters who have not availed them.

Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited to Set Up 75 Space Labs in EMR Schools

  • The Ministry of tribal affairs and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) announced the setting up of 'Space Labs' in 75 Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) across 19 states in the country.
  • Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India establishes EMRS to impart quality education to ST children thereby enabling them to avail of opportunities in high and professional educational courses and get gainful employment in various sectors. EMRS in addition to imparting high quality education also takes care of their nutrition and overall health and development. As on date there are 470 functional EMRS across the country.
  • BPCL announced that it will support the tribal affairs Ministry under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to set up the Space Labs.
  • Through this initiative, the Ministry seeks to bridge educational gaps and open new avenues for tribal youth in the fields of space science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM). By providing exposure to space sciences at a young age, the ministry aims to lay the foundation for nurturing future scientists, technologists, and innovators from tribal communities. This project marks a significant step towards mainstreaming tribal students into India's scientific advancement. It reflects the Government's broader efforts under the NEP 2020 framework to create equitable and inclusive educational opportunities for all sections of society.
  • The initiative will be technically supported by the Space tutor agencies recognized by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

IIM-Bangalore Tops Indian Institutions in QS Executive MBA Rankings 2025

  • Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore ranked the highest among Indian institutions in the QS Executive MBA rankings 2025. IIM Bangalore stood at rank 50, down from 41 last year. It is among the seven Indian institutions that feature in the QS Executive MBA rankings this year (2025), out of a total of 233 of the world's best executive MBA programmes. Of the seven, four are private institutions, and the other three are IIMs.

The Return of Raghuji Bhosale's Legendary Sword to Bharat

  • The Maharashtra government successfully purchased the iconic sword of Raghuji Bhosale I from an auction in London for Rs. 47.15 lakh. The sword, an emblem of the Maratha warrior's valour and legacy, was crafted in the firangi-style with a European-style single-edged blade, gold inlays, and inscriptions in Devanagari script. Raghuji Bhosale I played a pivotal role in consolidating the Maratha Empire and expanding its influence across east-central India. This historic acquisition is seen as a step toward preserving the Maratha culture and heritage.
