  • The 2025 edition of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People list features high-profile global figures such as U.S. President Donald Trump, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus. Interestingly, this year's (2025) list does not include any Indian nationals, a notable shift from 2024 when Indian celebrities like Bollywood star Alia Bhatt and Olympian wrestler Sakshi Malik were featured.

PM Modi Makes Historic Visit to Jeddah, First By Indian PM in 40 Years

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia. This was PM Modi's third visit to Saudi Arabia, while all other Indian Prime Ministers together visited the Gulf country just thrice in seven decades.
  • PM Modi met Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince and the country's PM, Mohammed bin Salman, in Jeddah. This was the first visit by any Indian Prime Minister to Jeddah in 40 years.
  • Jeddah is a very, very significant city in terms of connectivity between India and Saudi Arabia because for centuries, Jeddah was the port for the trade between the two countries, and it is also a gateway to Mecca. So anyone who is coming for Umrah and Hajj lands up in Jeddah and then goes to Mecca.

RBI Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar Gets One Year Extension

  • The central government extended the term of RBI Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar for one year, effective May 3, 2025. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his reappointment for the extended term.
  • He was appointed as the RBI Deputy Governor in May, 2021 for a period of three years.
  • He had joined the RBI in 1990 and worked in various positions at the central bank.
  • He was Executive Director of the Reserve Bank before being elevated to the post of deputy governor.

RBI Mandates 2.5% Additional Run-off Factor on Digital Deposits

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) eased the liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) norms under which the banks will now be required to assign an additional 2.5 per cent run-off factor for digital deposits.
  • The run-off factor refers to the percentage of deposits that could be withdrawn by depositors in a stress scenario. Internet and Mobile Banking facilities (IMB) includes all facilities such as but not limited to internet banking, mobile banking and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) which enables a customer to digitally transfer funds from their accounts.

Campbell Wilson Steps Down as AI Express Chairman

  • Air India CEO Campbell Wilson stepped down as the Chairman of Air India Express and Air India's Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Aggarwal will assume the chairmanship of the budget airline.
  • Wilson has been the Chairman of Air India Express since June 2022.

NASA's Perseverance Discovers Mysterious Dark Rock On Mars Named 'Skull Hill'

  • NASA's Mars rover pictured a mysterious, skull-shaped rock on the Red Planet whose origin remains uncertain. The mysterious rock, which NASA is calling the 'Skull Hill', was discovered on the Jezero crater rim.
  • Though most of the region surrounding the rock is light-colored and dusty, Skull Hill is dark, angular, and covered in tiny pits. This float rock uniquely contrasts the surrounding light-toned outcrop with its dark tone and angular surface, and it features a few pits in the rock.

Humanoid Robots Compete in Beijing Half-Marathon

  • Beijing witnessed a historic event the world's first Humanoid Robot Half-Marathon, where machines ran alongside humans in a symbolic convergence of sport and technology. Held under global media glare, the event showcased the significant strides being made in humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence. While human runners stuck to standard race norms, the robot participants followed specially adapted rules with engineering support. Despite mechanical missteps and frequent pit stops, the event sparked intense curiosity, optimism, and debate around the future role of robots in society.

India to Host 2nd Asian Yogasana Sports Championship from April 25 to 27

  • The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Yogasana Bharat, officially announced that India will host the 2nd Asian Yogasana Sports Championship from April 25 to 27 at the prestigious Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi.
  • Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, will grace the opening ceremony on April 25 as the Chief Guest, further reinforcing India's commitment to promoting Yogasana as a competitive global sport.

India to Release Monthly Unemployment Data from May 15 Onwards

  • Starting May 15, 2025, the Indian government will begin releasing monthly unemployment data, marking a significant shift from its previous practice of quarterly and annual reports. This move aims to provide more timely and detailed insights into the country's employment landscape.
  • The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) announced that the first set of monthly unemployment data will cover January to March 2025. Subsequent reports will be released monthly. This change is intended to offer policymakers more frequent and granular data to inform decisions at both national and local levels.

India Hosts Inaugural Capacity Building Programme for Central Asian Republics on Combating Terrorism Financing

  • The Department of Revenue (DoR), in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), successfully organised the first-ever Capacity Building Programme for Central Asian Republics (CARs) on 'Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) through Cryptocurrencies, Crowdfunding, and Non-Profit Organisations'. The two-day programme concluded April 22, 2025.
  • The Capacity Building Programme brought together senior experts from five Central Asian countries — Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan — the programme served as a platform for knowledge exchange and regional cooperation in tackling terrorism financing.

List of Outcomes: State Visit of Prime Minister to Saudi Arabia

  • The second leaders meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council (SPC) was co-chaired by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah. The Council reviewed the work of the various committees, subcommittees and working groups under the SPC, which encompass political, defence, security, trade, investment, energy, technology, agriculture, culture and people-to-people ties. The discussions were followed by signing of the minutes by the two leaders.
  • To strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties, which has significant momentum in recent years, the Council decided to create a new Ministerial Committee on Tourism and Cultural Cooperation under the SPC.
  • The four committees under the India-Saudi Arabia SPC shall now be as follows:
  • (1) Political, Consular and Security Cooperation Committee, (2) Defence Cooperation Committee, (3) Economy, Energy, Investment and Technology Committee and (4) Tourism and Cultural Cooperation Committee.

  • MoU between the Saudi Space Agency and the Department of Space of India on Cooperation in the field of Space Activities for Peaceful Purposes
  • MoU between the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India on Cooperation in the field of Health
  • MoU between the Saudi Arabian Anti-Doping Committee (SAADC) and the National Anti-Doping Agency, India (NADA) on Cooperation in the field of Anti-Doping Education and Prevention
