  • The one-day event was graced by the Agriculture Ministers and Senior Agriculture officials of the BIMSTEC countries: India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. According to the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, this meeting provided an opportunity for greater regional cooperation in the field of agricultural development.

Satish Chavva Appointed as CEO of OIJIF

  • The Oman India Joint Investment Fund (OIJIF) appointed Satish Chavva as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This appointment came as part of the fund's efforts to strengthen its leadership and strategic growth initiatives. With over two decades of experience in private equity and finance, Chavva is expected to steer the fund towards enhanced portfolio performance and long-term value creation. OIJIF is a private equity fund jointly promoted by the Oman Investment Authority (OIA) and the State Bank of India (SBI), focusing on investments that drive sustainable growth in India.

IOCL's to Invest Rs. 61,000 crore in Odisha for World-Class Petrochemical Complex

  • Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) announced an investment of Rs. 61,077 crore to establish a world-class petrochemical complex in Paradip, Odisha. This move marks the largest-ever investment by IOCL at a single location and aims to bolster India's petrochemical industry and manufacturing capabilities. The project will not only enhance the region's infrastructure but will also create a range of high-demand petrochemical products used in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, coatings, and adhesives. The agreement was formalised in the presence of key government officials, including Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram.

Department of Financial Services Notifies Amalgamation of 26 RRBs in Fourth Phase of Amalgamation

  • The Department of Financial Services (DFS) has notified the amalgamation of 26 Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) under the "One State, One RRB" principle. This is the fourth phase of the RRB consolidation process. The Ministry of Finance rolled out the amalgamation plan in November last year (2024), building on improvements in efficiency from previous phases.
  • Following consultations with stakeholders, 26 RRBs across 10 states and one Union Territory have been merged, focusing on enhancing scale, efficiency, and cost rationalisation. Currently, 43 RRBs operate across 26 states and two Union Territories. Post-amalgamation, there will be 28 RRBs covering 700 districts with more than 22,000 branches. Around 92 per cent of these branches are located in rural and semi-urban areas.

China Launches Antarctic Telescope for Milky Way Research

  • China launched the "Three Gorges Antarctic Eye" radio/millimetre-wave telescope. This facility is situated at the Zhongshan Station in Antarctica and marks advancement in China's astronomical research capabilities. The telescope is designed to study interstellar gas, particularly hydrogen and ammonia, and to investigate star formation processes.
  • The Three Gorges Antarctic Eye is a 3.2-metre aperture telescope. It has been co-developed by China Three Gorges University and Shanghai Normal University.
  • The primary scientific focus of the Three Gorges Antarctic Eye includes studying the Milky Way's neutral hydrogen and ammonia spectral lines. This research will contribute to a deeper understanding of cosmic phenomena and the processes involved in star formation.

Cricket in 2028 Olympics: Organisers Confirm Six Teams to Participate at LA Games

  • Organisers confirmed the return of cricket, to the Olympic Games after 128 years, at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics to be held from July 14 to 30, 2028, only six teams will be in contention for the coveted gold medal.
  • Last played in the Olympics as a one-off match in Paris in 1900, cricket will be part of the LA 2028 Games as well as in Brisbane four years later in 2032.
  • Organisers confirmed that the LA tournament would be played in the T20 format with six teams competing in both the men's and women's competitions. Consequently, 90 player quotas have been allocated for each gender, allowing every team to name a 15-member squad.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Flags off State Team for Khelo Masters National Championship

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami flagged off the Uttarakhand team from the Chief Minister's Camp Office for the fourth Khelo Masters National Championship to be held in New Delhi from April 11 to 13.
  • The event will feature athletics, football, basketball, hockey, shooting, badminton, table tennis, and volleyball.

India-UAE Strengthen To Enhance Strategic Partnership

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum held high-level discussions in New Delhi, aimed at enhancing the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their talks focused on strengthening cooperation in defence, coast guard operations, trade, technology, space, and people-to-people ties. Sheikh Hamdan's first official visit to India as crown prince marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations, underscoring shared strategic priorities and mutual economic interests.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to formalise Coast Guard collaboration.

Delhi Government Revokes 177 Political Appointments Made by AAP Regime

  • The BJP government in Delhi cancelled 177 political appointments made during the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration across various institutions and committees. The services department, in an official order, directed all departments to submit fresh proposals for reconstituting these bodies.

Government Launches New Aadhaar App

  • Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the beta version of the new Aadhaar app. The app promises stronger privacy and easier access to Aadhaar services.
  • The app, built with support from UIDAI, uses Face ID and artificial intelligence for real-time authentication. It also features QR code-based instant verification.
  • Users can verify their identity by simply scanning a QR code. No more need to carry Aadhaar photocopies while travelling, checking into hotels, or shopping.
  • The app ensures data sharing only with user consent. It gives individuals full control over what information they share.

India Clears Biggest-Ever Fighter Jet Deal: 26 Rafale Marine Jets for Navy Approved

  • India took a significant step in bolstering its naval aviation strength by approving a Rs. 63,000 crore (over $7 billion) inter-governmental deal with France for the procurement of 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets for the Indian Navy. This long-anticipated deal was formally cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and is poised to strengthen the Navy's air power, especially on the INS Vikrant, India's indigenously built aircraft carrier.
  • Out of the 26 Rafale-M jets 22 are single-seaters and 4 are twin-seater trainers.
  • They will operate from INS Vikrant, India's indigenous aircraft carrier.
