Bangladesh Takes Over Chairmanship of BIMSTEC for Next Two Years

  • Bangladesh officially became the new Chair of BIMSTEC for the next two years. It received the leadership from Thailand, the previous Chair.
  • Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, accepted the chairmanship. He said that Bangladesh will focus on making BIMSTEC more inclusive (involving everyone) and action-oriented (focused on real results).
  • Bangladesh now has a big role in leading BIMSTEC and helping the region move forward together. With cooperation and shared goals, the BIMSTEC countries hope to build a stronger and more connected South and Southeast Asia.

BP Chair Helge Lund to Step Down

  • The chair of BP announced plans to step down from the struggling oil company after growing shareholder opposition derailed its net zero agenda.
  • The oil company said that Helge Lund planned to leave his post in due course once a successor has joined the board, which would most likely be in 2026.
  • His decision to step down from the role, which he has held since 2019, came after the board was forced to reverse the company's green agenda to defend it against Elliott, a feared New York hedge fund known for its attempts to shake up listed companies.

Puma Appoints Arthur Hoeld as CEO and Matthias Bäumer as Chief Commercial Officer

  • Puma, a sports apparel giant appointed Arthur Hoeld as the new Chairman of the Management Board and CEO, effective July 1, 2025. This appointment follows a mutual agreement between current CEO Arne Freundt and the Supervisory Board for Freundt to step down on April 11, 2025, citing differing views on the company's strategic execution. Freundt will depart Puma after 14 years of service in various leading roles.
  • Adding to the executive changes, Matthias Bäumer, currently Vice President of PUMA's Business Unit Teamsport, has been appointed as the new Chief Commercial Officer of Puma SE.

The 15th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship Begins in Jhansi

  • The 15th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship is taking place from April 4 to 15 at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The tournament is following the newly introduced division-based format, first implemented in the Senior Women's National Championship in March.
  • This year (2025), the championship introduced promotion and relegation battles, adding a competitive edge. A total of 30 teams are competing across three divisions: Division A, Division B, and Division C.
  • Division A is the top-tier division, where teams will compete for the national title. Division B will feature teams battling for promotion to Division A, while Division C will see teams aiming to move up to Division B. The bottom two teams from Division A will be relegated to Division B, while the top two from Division B will earn promotion. Similarly, the top two teams from Division C will move up to Division B, and the bottom two from Division B will be relegated.

  • The Indian team will play the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group-1, organised by MSLTA in association with AITA and PMDTA, on home soil from April 8 to 12 at the Mhalunge Balewadi tennis complex in Pune.
  • India will be eyeing a berth in the play-offs stage for the second time in the tournament's history at the event being hosted after a decade in India, 25 years in Maharashtra and the first ever time in Pune.

Centre Withdraws Controversial 'Star-rating System' for State Green Clearances

  • The Union environment ministry "gave up" on a star-rating system it had introduced in January 2022 to evaluate expert environmental bodies in states on their efficiency and promptness in granting prior environmental clearances to industry and infrastructure projects, according to an order by the National Green Tribunal's (NGT's) southern zone bench in Chennai.
  • The Centre informed the NGT of its stand as part of the proceedings of a plea which had challenged an office memorandum (OM) rolling out the star-rating system.
  • The Centre had introduced the star-rating system on January 17, 2022, to incentivise the states through a star-rating system based on efficiency and timelines in the grant of environmental clearances.

  • The First International Research Conference on Pension (IRCP) 2025 held in New Delhi concluded on April 4. It was inaugurated at Bharat Mandapam by Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Finance, Government of India. The two-day event was organised by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), to mark a historic milestone in India's journey toward robust old-age income security.

Air India Partners with Apple to Enable AirTag-based Lost Baggage Tracking

  • Air India partnered with Apple to integrate Apple's item tracker, AirTag, with its baggage tracking system and mobile app. This partnership allows Apple device users to track the location of their luggage and share that information with the airline, simplifying the process of finding lost baggage.
  • Apple introduced the 'Share Item Location' feature last year (2024), enabling travellers to share the location of their AirTag or other compatible 'Find My' network accessories with other parties, including some airlines. Air India became the first Indian airline to join the list of airlines taking part, which includes British Airways, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic, and others.
