New Delhi is Most Polluted Capital, Byrnihat in Meghalaya Tops List of Cities

  • New Delhi continues to be the world's most polluted capital while Meghalaya's Byrnihat is the world's most polluted metropolitan area, according to the 2024 World Air Quality Report released in March 2025.
  • With an average annual PM 2.5 concentration of 91.8 µg/m3, New Delhi remained the most polluted capital city followed by Chad's N'Djamena (91.6) and Dhaka (78).
  • According to the latest report, prepared by Swiss air quality technology company IQAir, 13 of the world's 20 most polluted cities are in India, with Byrnihat topping the chart with an annual average PM 2.5 concentration of 128.2 µg/m3.

Vikas Kaushal Appointed as HPCL CMD

  • The government appointed Vikas Kaushal as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) for a tenure of five years. He replaced Rajneesh Narang, who had been serving as the interim CMD since September 1, 2024. Kaushal has over 30 years of experience in energy, oil & gas, and power sectors.
  • Previously he served as MD & Country Head of Kearney India for five years.
  • He was twice elected to Kearney's Global Board of Directors, the only Indian considered for the role.

Manohar Lal Khattar Opens Global Power Conference GRIDCON 2025

  • The GRIDCON 2025 — an international conference cum exhibition — at Yashobhoomi, Dwarka, New Delhi concluded on March 11, 2025.
  • It was inaugurated by Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar, and organised by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited under the patronage of the Ministry of Power, in association with CIGRE, India.

NASA's SPHEREx Telescope

  • A NASA telescope was launched into space from California for a mission to explore the origins of the universe and to scour the Milky Way Galaxy for hidden reservoirs of water, a key ingredient for life.
  • The U.S. space agency's megaphone-shaped SPHEREx, short for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionisation and Ices Explorer, was carried aloft by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
  • During its planned two-year mission, the observatory will collect data on more than 450 million galaxies, as well as more than 100 million stars in the Milky Way. It will create a three-dimensional map of the cosmos in 102 colours - individual wavelengths of light - and will study the history and evolution of galaxies.

Indian Wrestling Gets a Boost as Sports Ministry Restores WFI Recognition as NSF

  • The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports lifted the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), restoring its recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF). This decision ended months of uncertainty and allows the resumption of activities, including selection trials for the upcoming Asian Championship in Amman.
  • The WFI was initially suspended on December 24, 2023, due to governance lapses and procedural irregularities following the election of Sanjay Singh as its new president on December 21. The suspension came after Singh announced the Under-15 and Under-20 National Championships in Nandini Nagar, Gonda—considered the stronghold of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faced sexual harassment allegations.

  • The first day of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2025 saw a series of remarkable performances across track and field events, highlighting both international flair and strong home-ground domination by Indian athletes.
  • India made a clean sweep in the Men's Discus Throw F11 event, where Sagar clinched the gold with a throw of 34.84 meters, followed by Balaji Rajendran, who secured silver with 26.98 meters, and Janak Singh Harsana, who bagged bronze with a mark of 25.13 meters.

  • Participating in the 6th Asian Women's Kabaddi Championship, held in Tehran, Iran the Indian Women's Kabaddi team successfully defended their title, beating hosts Iran 32-25.
  • The Championship had 7 teams divided into the following 2 groups:

  • Group B: Iran, Iraq, Nepal
  • The Kabaddi tournament returned after an 8-year hiatus, with the previous edition held in 2017 in Iran, where India defeated South Korea to win the trophy.

SEBI Introduces Certification Courses on Anti-Money Laundering, Financing Terrorism

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) introduced two new courses on Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) for the market intermediaries. The course is introduced to create a minimum knowledge benchmark for employees and their associated persons about concepts of AML and CFT and related aspects, provisions of the PMLA & PML rules, and scheduled offences under the SEBI Act and the Companies Act.
  • To enhance the capital market, the SEBI has been organising outreach programs focused on Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) provisions, aimed at benefiting securities market intermediaries.
  • As part of this effort, the course titled "AML and CFT Provisions in Securities Market Certification Examination" has been developed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in collaboration with the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM).
