MoC Inked for India's 1st API, Green Hydrogen, Ethanol Facility in Himachal

  • The Himachal Pradesh government signed a Memorandum of Commitment (MoC) with Chandigarh-based Spray Engineering Devices Ltd to establish India's first integrated manufacturing facility for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), Green Hydrogen, and 2G Ethanol. The Rs. 1,400 crore-project will be set up in Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN), Solan district, and is expected to create 1,000 jobs.
  • Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, present at the signing, reaffirmed the state's goal to become a 'green energy' state by March 2026.

Sunil Chhetri Revokes Retirement Decision

  • India senior men's national team head coach Manolo Marquez named his 26-member squad, including the legendary Sunil Chhetri, for the March FIFA International Window. The fourth-highest international goal scorer of all-time with 94 strikes to his credit, Chhetri had announced his retirement from the national team in June 2024 but is now set to make a return in India's blue later this month (March 2025).

Sahitya Akademi Organises "Festival of Letters 2025"

  • Sahitya Akademi, India's premier literary institution working under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is organising its annual Festival of Letters at Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi from March 7 to 12, 2025. Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Government of India, inaugurated the festival.
  • This is Asia's Largest Literature Festival with about 700 writers from different parts of the country representing more than 50 languages participating in the festival that spans over 100 sessions. The theme of the festival is 'Indian Literary Traditions'.

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, developed a framework that can boost protection of critical infrastructure in the country against the threat of ballistic missiles.
  • The framework will help designers develop innovative solutions for improving the ballistic resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) panels.

  • International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8, celebrates women's accomplishments across various fields. It serves as a platform to advocate for gender equality and highlight challenges faced by women worldwide.
  • The origins of International Women's Day trace back to 1911, inspired by labour movements advocating for women's rights. German activist Clara Zetkin proposed the idea, leading to the first celebrations in USA and Europe. The United Nations officially recognised March 8 as International Women's Day in 1975, solidifying its global significance.
  • The theme for International Women's Day 2025 is 'For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment'

Central University of Pondicherry Appoints Prof P. Prakash Babu as Vice-Chancellor

  • The Ministry of Education appointed Prof P. Prakash Babu of the University of Hyderabad as the Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Pondicherry. Prof Babu, a senior faculty at the department of biotechnology and Bioinformatics under the School of Life Sciences in Hyderabad University, was appointed to the post for a period of five years.
  • Prof Babu's academic journey includes a BSc in Zoology from Nagarjuna University, an MSc in Zoology from Andhra University, and a PhD from the School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad. His research areas are Neurosciences and Neurodegenerative diseases.

IWAI Signs MoU with J&K to Boost River Cruise Tourism

  • The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) signed an agreement with the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government to boost river cruise tourism on three national waterways in the Union Territory.
  • The agreement aims to further bolster tourism, generate employment, boost economic growth and provide a new mode of leisure/budget tourism on local rivers.
  • The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on the sidelines of Chintan Shivir being held in Srinagar in the presence of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
  • Of the 111 national waterways in the country, the Union Territory has three declared national waterways, i.e., River Chenab (NW-26), River Jhelum (NW-49) and River Ravi (NW-84).
