Tuhin Kanta Pandey Appointed New SEBI Chairman

  • IAS Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed new SEBI Chairman. The 1987-batch officer from Odisha cadre replaced Madhabi Puri Buch, whose three-year tenure ended in February 2025.
  • Pandey holds a Masters in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh and an MBA from the University of Birmingham (UK).
  • Pandey was serving as the Secretary, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance and the Finance secretary before this appointment. Previously, he held the charge of Secretary of three Departments– Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM), Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and Department of Personnel and Training.

Mahindra SA Inks MoU to Explore Auto Production Feasibility in South Africa

  • Mahindra South Africa, the local subsidiary of the Indian automative giant, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to undertake an in-depth feasibility study on the potential establishment of a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicle assembly facility in the country.
  • Mahindra South Africa is also in the process of increasing its productive capacity at its assembly facility operation by AIH Logistics in KwaZulu-Natal province as it enters a third decade in the country, which it often refers to as "Mahindra's second home."

Yes Bank Leads S&P Global Sustainability Rankings 2025

  • Yes Bank emerged as India's highest-rated bank in sustainability for the third consecutive year, as per the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) 2024 and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). 
  • With a CSA score of 72/100, Yes Bank is the only Indian bank featured in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2025, which recognises the top 15% of global banking leaders based on ESG performance. The bank also retained its A- (Leadership Band) rating from CDP, highlighting its strong climate risk management and disclosure practices.

Intuitive Machines Embarks on Second Moon Landing Mission with Athena Lander

  • Intuitive Machines' second moon lander was launched atop a SpaceX rocket, setting off for the latest private U.S. moonshot one year after the company's first attempt ended early with a lopsided landing.
  • The six-legged lander, named Athena and roughly as tall as a giraffe, will spend about a week heading toward the moon, where on March 6 it will attempt to land on Mons Mouton, a flat-topped mountain some 100 miles (160 km) from the lunar south pole.
  • The lander is loaded with scientific instruments - mostly customer payloads - including a "hopper" rover built by Intuitive Machines that will deploy from the lander after touchdown and hop around the lunar terrain as a mobility test.

Sports Ministry Introduces New Course to Help Elite Athletes Become Coaches

  • Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched a special 'Capacity Building Course' in collaboration with Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala for current and former elite sports persons in an effort to help India produce more home-grown coaches and officials.
  • The course has been designed and developed for athletes who are currently employed and serving in various central government or autonomous departments, organisations under central government or Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
  • The eligibility criteria for this course are participation or medal winner in Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.
  • The medal winners of Youth Olympics, Junior World Championship, World University Games, senior National Championship and National Games can enrol for the course.

IPL 2025: Kevin Pietersen Named Delhi Capitals Mentor

  • Former England captain Kevin Pietersen was named the Delhi Capitals mentor for the IPL 2025 season. Pietersen will be seen in a coaching assignment for the first time in the IPL since last featuring as a player in the league in 2016.
  • Pietersen played for three IPL teams across five seasons from 2009, including Delhi (then Daredevils). He also led in 17 matches in the IPL. After leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru briefly in IPL 2009, Pietersen captained Daredevils in 2014 when they finished at the bottom of the league table with only two wins.

PM Modi Attends 25th Anniversary of Jahan-e-Khusrau Sufi Music Festival

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the grand Sufi music festival, Jahan-e-Khusrau 2025, at Sunder Nursery in New Delhi. This marked a first for the Prime Minister, who has been a strong proponent of promoting India's diverse art and culture.
  • "The festival is bringing together artists from across the world to celebrate the legacy of Amir Khusrau. Organised by Rumi Foundation, the festival, started by renowned filmmaker and artist Muzaffar Ali in 2001, will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year and will be held from February 28 to March 2.

Madhu Rani Teotia Appointed Secretary to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta

  • Senior bureaucrat Madhu Rani Teotia was appointed the secretary of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The notice was issued by Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena. Born in 1981, she is a 2008 batch IAS officer. 
  • Ms. Teotia had previously served as Additional Chief Executive Officer at the National Health Authority under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Government Launches Aadhaar Good Governance Portal

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched Aadhaar Good Governance portal to streamline approval process for Aadhaar authentication requests. This is in sync with an effort to make Aadhaar more people-friendly, enable ease of living, and enable better access to services for people.
  • The Aadhaar Good Governance portal was launched by S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY in the presence of Bhuvnesh Kumar, CEO UIDAI, and others.

CISF Names Recruits Training Centre in Arakkonam

  • The Recruits Training Centre (RTC) of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in Arakkonam was renamed Rajaditya Cholan (RTC), Thakkolam, in memory of the Chola prince. Rajwinder Singh Bhatti, Director General of the CISF, issued the order for the change of name.

Coast Guard Regional Headquarters in Kolkata Bag Three of Eight Tatrakshak Medals

  • The headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Region North East, based in Kolkata, received three of the eight Tatrakshak Medals (TM) awarded by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. 
  • This regional headquarters is in charge of operations along the West Bengal and Odisha coast. Those from the Region North East who received the coveted awards are DIG Anil Kumar Parayil, DIG Himanshu Nautiyal and Uttam Navik Mohit Kumar. While DIG Parayil is in charge of the ICG air enclave in Kolkata, DIG Nautiyal is the chief of staff, Headquarters North East Region. Both of them were awarded the medals for meritorious service. Uttam Navik Mohit Kumar was awarded the Tatrakshak Medal for gallantry for saving lives at sea.

Boris Spassky Passes Away

  • Boris Spassky, the 10th world champion of chess, passed away, FIDE announced. He was 88. He became the world champion after defeating Tigran Petrosian and then famously lost in the Match of the Century against Bobby Fischer in 1972 at Iceland's Reykjavík.
  • Spassky was a chess prodigy who went on to become a Grandmaster at the age of 18 and was known as one of the most talented players of his generation.
  • What was remarkable about him was that he played for France in his latter years. Spassky played seven times at the Chess Olympiad for the Soviet team (between 1962 to 1978). Then in 1976, Spassky immigrated to France and became a French citizen two years later. Then, he competed for France in three Olympiads (1984–1988). He became a Russian citizen again in 2013.

Rare Disease Day

  • Rare Disease Day is an observance held on the last day of February to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to treatment and medical representation for individuals with rare diseases and their families. In 2025, it was held on February 28.
  • Rare Disease Day was first established in 2008 by the European Organisation for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS). The chosen date—February 29, was no coincidence. Since this day appears only in leap years, it symbolically reflects the rarity of the conditions being highlighted.
  • Rare Disease Day 2025 theme is 'More than you can imagine; an anthology of rare experiences.'

National Science Day

  • National Science Day is observed on February 28 to honour Sir C. V. Raman's discovery of the Raman Effect.
  • National Science Day is observed on February 28 to honour Sir CV Raman's discovery of the Raman Effect in 1928, which later won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The idea of commemorating this achievement was proposed by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) in 1986. The Government of India officially declared February 28 as National Science Day. The first celebration took place in 1987.
  • The theme for National Science Day 2025 is 'Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat.'

Animal Welfare Board of India to Honour Champions of Animal Protection

  • The 'Prani Mitra and Jeev Daya Award Ceremony' was organised by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), a statutory body of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. AWBI has been established under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960 to ensure that animals are not subjected to unnecessary pain or suffering. The event was graced by Union Ministers of State, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian. 
  • The event marked the release of four important books for effective implementation of rules and guidelines for animal welfare in India. These books will serve as vital tools for veterinarians, policymakers and field officials, to help ensure timely and effective responses for animal welfare. These include Handbook for Veterinary Officers on Animal Welfare Laws; Law Enforcement Handbook on Animal Welfare Laws; Animal Law Handbook for Urban Local Bodies and Revised Animal Birth Control (ABC) module for Street Dogs Population management, rabies eradication and reducing man-dog conflict.
  • This year's (2025) 'Prani Mitra Awards' were conferred to the following individuals/ organisations under five categories:

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) and Swinburne University of Technology (Swinburne), Australia launched SIMMECT—the 'Swinburne-IITH Manufacturing, Materials, Energy, and Communication Technologies Joint Research Institute.' This initiative aims to strengthen the research collaboration between IITH and Swinburne, fostering cutting-edge advancements with significant industry and societal impact.
