  • T. K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways led the Indian delegation comprising Mukesh Mangal, Joint Secretary, N. Muruganandam, Director General of Lighthouses and Lightships, and S. Saravanan, Dy. Director, at the 1st General Assembly of IALA in Singapore.
  • The first General Assembly of IALA also marks its transition from a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to an inter-governmental organisation (IGO), where India was elected to its Vice Presidency. This underscores India's strong leadership and contributions to maritime affairs, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable and secure marine navigation.
  • IALA, established in 1957 as an NGO, transitioned to an IGO to enhance its role in shaping international standards and best practices for safe and efficient navigation.

Rekha Gupta Delhi's New Chief Minister

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta was appointed as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the BJP's return to power after 27 years. The party secured a clear majority with 44 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections held in February 2025.
  • Gupta became Delhi's fourth woman CM.
  • Gupta joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the students' organisation affiliated to the RSS, starting her political journey at Daulat Ram College in 1993. She served as the general general secretary of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) from 1995 to 1996 and was its president from 1996 to 1997. She holds a degree in commerce and a Master's degree in management and arts from the University of Delhi.
  • In 2002, Gupta joined the BJP and went on to become the secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha's Delhi unit.

New Uttarakhand Law Restricts Outsiders from Buying Land in 11 Districts

  • The Uttarakhand Cabinet approved a new draft law banning people from outside the state from buying agricultural and horticultural land in 11 of the state's 13 districts. The new draft law will be tabled in the ongoing Budget Session of the Assembly.
  • Under the new draft law, people from outside the state — except for Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar — will not be allowed to purchase horticultural and agricultural land, and district magistrates will no longer have the authority to approve land purchases.
  • This is a departure from the current rule, which states that non-residents can purchase up to 250 sq. m of land without permission outside municipal limits, while there is no limit for permanent residents.

The 13th Malaysia-India Defence Cooperation Committee Meeting

  • The 13th meeting of Malaysia-India Defence Cooperation Committee (MIDCOM) took place in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Secretary General of Ministry of Defence, Malaysia Lokman Hakim Bin Ali. Both sides expressed happiness at the growing bilateral defence cooperation with regular engagements between the two Armed Forces in recent years.
  • The two sides held wide-ranging discussions on effective & practical initiatives to further expand bilateral defence engagements and regional & global issues. Both chairs identified steps to further enhance cooperation in emerging areas such as cyber security and Al. They identified ways to deepen existing collaboration, particularly in the defence industry, maritime security, and multilateral engagements. They agreed to form a joint focus group to address non-traditional maritime security threats.
  • Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to fully implement the new initiatives under the defence pillar of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and his Malaysian counterpart Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the latter's visit to India in August 2024.
  • India and Malaysia also exchanged the finalised Terms of Reference (ToR) on the establishment of Strategic Affairs Working Group. This forum will act as a consultative mechanism intermediate between the MIDCOM and the two sub-committees to progress all aspects of bilateral defence cooperation.

World Anthropology Day

  • World Anthropology Day 2025 is celebrated every year on third Thursday of February and in 2025 it falls on February 20.
  • World Anthropology Day was started in 2015 by the American Anthropological Association to help people learn more about the study of humans and their cultures.
  • World Anthropology Day is important because it helps people understand human cultures, traditions, and societies. It gives anthropologists a chance to share their work with the public and show how their research helps solve real-world problems.

Mizoram Foundation Day

  • Mizoram Foundation Day is celebrated every year on February 20 to honour the north-eastern state's accomplishment of statehood in 1987. It was on this day that the Lushai Hills Autonomous District Council was raised to the status of a complete state, turning into the 23rd state of India.
  • The historical backdrop of Mizoram traces all the way back to 1961, when the Mizo National Front (MNF) was formed by local Mizo tribal leaders to request political rights. The MNF's essential goal was to protect the privileges of the Mizo people and promote their consideration in the public eye. To that end, the MNF launched a fierce revolt against the government of India in 1966.
  • The insurgency, which went on for two decades, at last brought about the peace accord between the government of India and the MNF in 1986. This historic agreement prepared for the foundation of Mizoram as a state of India on February 20, 1987.

World Day of Social Justice

  • World Day of Social Justice is observed on February 20 to promote fairness and equality for all citizens. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about social injustice and breaking down barriers based on gender, racism, inequality, religious discrimination, etc.
  • In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared February 20 as World Day of Social Justice as part of its efforts to promote social justice, solidarity and equal distribution of resources around the world. The first celebration was held in 2009 to draw attention to issues such as poverty, unequal treatment and a lack of employment opportunities.
  • The theme for World Day of Social Justice 2025 is 'Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice', which highlights the necessity of providing equal opportunity to everyone, regardless of their background.

Arunachal Pradesh Cabinet Approves Schemes for Women, Youth & Development

  • The Arunachal Pradesh cabinet revamped the Dulari Kanya Scheme, increasing financial support for girls born in institutional deliveries. The fixed deposit amount has been raised from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000, which will mature when the beneficiary turns 18. Additionally, to support girls' education, a direct benefit transfer (DBT) of Rs. 20,000 will be provided when they enroll in Class XI. This revision brings the total benefit under the scheme to Rs. 50,000. The scheme aims to encourage female education and improve the well-being of girls across the state.

  • Ajmer became the venue for the first-ever All India Kinnar Mahasammelan, a historic 10-day transgender conference held at a private school in Vaishali Nagar. The event, which began on February 17, 2025, with the Khichdi Tulai ritual, is aimed at addressing issues faced by the transgender community across India. The conference is organised in memory of Anita Bai, the mentor of Gaddipati Saloni Nayak, a respected figure in Ajmer's transgender community.
  • Attended by over 2,000 transgender members from various states, the event is deeply rooted in religious and cultural traditions.

University of Southampton Appoints Prof Eloise Phillips as Academic Provost for New Delhi Campus

  • The University of Southampton announced the appointment of Professor Eloise Phillips as Academic Provost for the New Delhi campus. She will take up the post in May and will welcome the first students in August.
  • She has played an important role in establishing the University of Birmingham's flagship campus in Dubai where she is currently Head of Health, Wellbeing, and Human Science programmes. Previous to this, Eloise was an Associate Dean at Aston University.

Senior Advocate Vivek Subba Reddy Re-Elected As President of Advocates' Association Bengaluru

  • Senior Advocate Vivek Subba Reddy was re-elected as the President of the Advocates' Association, Bengaluru (AAB) for the second consecutive term. Reddy secured a record-breaking 6,820 votes, defeating former AAB President Ranganath AP, who garnered 4,518 votes. Other candidates included Rajanna R (1,473 votes), Nanjappa Kalegowda (123 votes), Ravi T G (378 votes), and Rajashekhara TA (90 votes).
  • Girish Kumar CS was elected as Vice President with 5,060 votes, defeating CR Gowda who secured 3,128 votes. Praveen Gowda HV became the General Secretary after receiving 4,854 votes, surpassing Harisha MT with 3,728 votes. Shwetha Ravishankar won the Treasurer position with 2,950 votes in a competitive election reserved for women.
