LIC Launches Marketing Tech Platform under Project DIVE

Standard Chartered Appoints P.D. Singh as India CEO

  • Standard Chartered Bank secured approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to appoint P.D. Singh as its Chief Executive Officer for India and South Asia. Singh, a veteran in corporate banking and former CEO of JP Morgan India, will assume his new role on April 1, 2025. He will replace Zarin Daruwala, who is set to retire on March 31, 2025, after leading the bank for nearly a decade.

RBI Launches Mobile App Offering Financial Statistics Related to Economy

  • Reserve Bank launched mobile application 'RBIDATA' which will provide access to more than 11,000 different series of economic data related to the Indian economy.
  • The mobile app offers macroeconomic and financial statistics relating to the Indian economy in a user-friendly and visually engaging format.
  • Users will be able to view time series data in graphs/charts and download data for analysis. There will also be details such as data source, unit of measurement, frequency and recent updates.
  • Further, the app's 'Banking Outlet' section will help users find banking facilities within 20 kilometres of their location and they can also access data about SAARC countries through the 'SAARC Finance'.

India Develops World's Largest Propellant Mixer for Solid Rocket Motors

  • India's Space Research Organisation (ISRO) developed a 10-tonne propellant mixer for solid motors. This mixer was created at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR), ISRO, located in Sriharikota, in collaboration with the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) in Bengaluru, a leading research and development organisation under the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

Indonesia Beats China to Clinch First Asia Mixed Team Badminton Title

  • In a historic victory, Indonesia secured its first-ever Asia Mixed Team Badminton Championship title by defeating defending champions China with a commanding 3-1 win at the Conson Sports Centre in Qingdao, China. The Indonesian team displayed remarkable skill and determination, sealing their triumph with a dominant performance in the men's doubles match. This victory marks a significant milestone in Indonesia's badminton legacy, breaking China's stronghold in the tournament.

Ranchi to host 4th South Asian Senior Athletics Championships in May

  • The 4th South Asian Senior Athletics Championship will be held from May 3 to 5, 2025, at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand, with countries like India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives participating; this event will serve as a qualifier for regional and international competitions.
  • Ranchi was originally scheduled to host the championships from October 4 to 6, 2024 but the event was postponed. This event marks the return of the championships to India after 17 years, with the last edition held in 2008. The first two editions of the South Asian Senior Athletics Championships were held in 1997 and 1998.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Inaugurates NAKSHA Programme for Urban Land Survey

  • Union Minister of Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations (NAKSHA) in 152 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across 26 States and 3 Union Territories (UTs) at Raisen, Madhya Pradesh. The Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, initiated this pilot programme.
  • The NAKSHA programme aims to create and update land records in urban areas to ensure accurate and reliable documentation of land ownership. This initiative will empower citizens, improve ease of living, enhance urban planning, and reduce land-related disputes. The IT-based system for property record administration will foster transparency, efficiency and support sustainable development.
  • The Survey of India is the technical partner for NAKSHA programme which is responsible for conducting aerial surveys and providing orthorectified imagery, through third party vendors, to state and Union Territory governments.

Union Minister Pabitra Margherita Inaugurates SILKTECH 2025

  • Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for Textiles & Foreign Affairs inaugurated the CSB's International Conference - SILKTECH 2025 in the august presence of Smt. Neelam Shami Rao IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi as a part of the mega textile event - Bharat Tex 2025. The conference, organised by CSB-Central Tasar Research & Training Institute, Ranchi, and CSB-Central Silk Technological Research Institute (CSTRI) under the Ministry of Textiles, focused on emerging technologies in the silk sector to enhance quality, sustainability, and global competitiveness. 
  • Pabitra Margherita mentioned about the exclusive Muga & Eri silks of North East. He highlighted the Zero waste technologies in silk value chain.

BJP Sweeps Local Body Polls in Gujarat by Winning 60 Municipalities of 68

  • The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the local body polls in Gujarat by winning the Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JMC) as well as 60 municipalities out of 68 and all three taluka panchayats where voting was held on February 16.
  • This time, the BJP has managed to snatch more than a dozen municipalities from the Congress in a state where the ruling party continued its electoral dominance after sweeping the 2022 assembly polls and winning 25 of the 26 Lok Sabha seats last year.
  • The Congress won just one municipality, while the Samajwadi Party (SP), a regional outfit, did better by bagging two municipalities.

Indian Navy Launches Eighth MCA Barge, LSAM 11

  • The Indian Navy marked a significant milestone by launching its eighth Missile Cum Ammunition (MCA) Barge, LSAM 11 (Yard 79). This key event took place in Mira Bhayandar, Maharashtra, at the launch site of M/s SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, Visakhapatnam. The ceremony was presided over by Commodore N. Gopinath, AGM (PL) at Naval Dockyard Mumbai. This addition to the Indian Navy's fleet is set to strengthen its logistical support and operational capabilities.
  • The LSAM 11 is one of eight MCA Barges designed to play a critical role in supporting the Navy's operational needs. These barges are primarily used to transport, embark, and disembark ammunition and other critical supplies to Indian Navy platforms, especially at outer harbors and jetties.

International Fleet Review 2025 and Exercise Komodo 2025

  • The International Fleet Review (IFR) 2025 is taking place in Bali, Indonesia. This event concludes on February 22, 2025. The Indian Navy is represented by the INS Shardul and the Long Range Maritime Surveillance P8I aircraft. The IFR is a prestigious multinational naval event that showcases naval forces from various countries and is reviewed by the President of Indonesia.
  • The IFR aims to strengthen maritime cooperation among nations.

Govement Extends PM-AASHA Scheme to Support Farmers until 2025-26

  • The Government of India extended the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA) scheme until 2025-26. This move is aimed at providing better income support to farmers by ensuring that they receive remunerative prices for their produce. PM-AASHA also helps stabilise the prices of essential food commodities, benefiting both farmers and consumers alike.
  • The PM-AASHA scheme focuses on several key components that directly benefit farmers. One of the main components is the Price Support Scheme (PSS). This scheme allows the government to procure notified pulses, oilseeds, and copra at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) from pre-registered farmers through designated agencies like NAFED and NCCF. This ensures that farmers get a fair price for their crops, even when market prices are low.

IISc, IIT Delhi, Madras Figure in THE World Reputation Rankings 2025

  • Four Indian universities figured in the list of the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2025. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru is among the best performers from India. The other three include the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, IIT Madras, and Shiksha 'O" Anusandhan.
  • All the Indian institutes saw a drop in their rankings, compared to one released in 2023. While IISc, which was ranked 101-125, is now ranked at 201-300. IIT Delhi and IIT Madras, which now rank at 201-300 respectively, were ranked 151-175 and 176-200 respectively in the 2023 edition. Shiksha 'O' Anusandhan is the new entrant this year and is ranked at 201-300.  IIT Bombay which was among the list of THE World Reputation Rankings in 2023 ranking 151-175, is not on the list anymore.
  • The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2025 reveals the top universities for academic reputation and prestige globally. This year, 300 institutions from 38 countries and territories were ranked based on six performance indicators for the first time – research vote count, teaching vote count, research pair-wise comparison, teaching pair-wise comparison, research voter diversity, and teaching voter diversity.
  • Harvard University remains number one for the 14th consecutive year in THE World Reputation Rankings. Oxford University is now joint second – the highest position for a UK institution since 2015. Oxford is ranked second with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
