RBI Fines Shriram Finance, Ujjivan SFB, and Nainital Bank for Violations

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) took strict action against three financial institutions, Shriram Finance, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, and Nainital Bank, by imposing monetary penalties for non-compliance with various regulatory norms. The penalties were imposed under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, following the RBI's Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation (ISE 2023), which assessed the financial health of these institutions as of March 31, 2023. The violations ranged from non-adherence to interest rate directives, loan documentation irregularities, and risk categorization lapses.
  • Nainital Bank faced a penalty of Rs. 61.40 lakh for failing to follow RBI's norms on 'Interest Rate on Advances' and 'Customer Service in Banks.'
  • Ujjivan Small Finance Bank was fined Rs. 6.70 lakh for not issuing loan agreements to some borrowers at the time of loan disbursement.
  • Shriram Finance received a penalty of Rs. 5.80 lakh for not setting up a system to review risk categorisation of accounts periodically, which is essential for regulatory compliance.

Madhya Pradesh Unveils India's First GCC Policy

  • Madhya Pradesh took a major step in India's economic landscape by introducing the country's first dedicated Global Capability Centre (GCC) Policy 2025. This initiative aims to attract multinational corporations by creating a strong ecosystem for global innovation and collaboration, particularly in Tier-2 cities like Indore, Bhopal, and Jabalpur. By providing a business-friendly environment, financial incentives, and infrastructure development, the state plans to position itself as a preferred destination for GCCs.
  • The policy targets sectors such as IT, finance, engineering, human resources, and emerging technologies, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.

Financial Services Firm Navi Appoints new CEOs

  • Financial services player Navi Group announced the appointment of two new Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) for its companies, including Navi Technologies and Navi Finserv.
  • Sachin Bansal resigned from his position as CEO of the companies and will serve as the executive chairman of Navi Group.
  • Rajiv Naresh was appointed CEO of Navi Technologies, whereas Abhishek Dwivedi was appointed as Navi Finserv's CEO.
  • Both have been part of Navi since its inception.

Jaspal Rana, Deepali Deshpande Return to National Coaching Setup

  • Dronacharya Awardee coach Deepali Deshpande and Manu Bhaker's coach Jaspal Rana returned to the national shooting coaching setup, announced NRAI.
  • In the governing body meeting of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), the body decided to appoint Deepali Deshpande as the head coach of rifle and Jaspal Rana as the high-performance coach of 25m pistol.
  • In all, a total of 16 new members were appointed to the coaching team, with 19 being retained, including one coordinator (Amar Jung Singh) and two coaches (Priti Sharma and Anuja Jung) for Deaf Shooters.

Manu Bhaker Named BBC Sportswoman of the Year

  • Indian shooter Manu Bhaker was honoured as the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year, following a remarkable campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024, where she secured two historic bronze medals. Her performances cemented her status as one of India's finest sporting talents, making her the first Indian female shooter to win multiple medals at a single Olympic Games.
  • Manu Bhaker edged out a strong field of nominees to claim the prestigious award. The other contenders for the honour included golfer Aditi Ashok, para-shooter Avani Lekhara, India women's cricket vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and wrestler Vinesh Phogat—all of whom have been exceptional ambassadors of Indian sports on the global stage.

Jacob Kiplimo Breaks Half-Marathon World Record in Barcelona

  • Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo made history in Barcelona by shattering the world half-marathon record. Kiplimo, who reclaimed the title he held in 2021, set a new record by finishing the 21.0975 km race in an astounding 56 minutes and 42 seconds. This performance was a remarkable 48 seconds faster than the previous world record, set by Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha in November 2024. Kiplimo's extraordinary achievement is being hailed as the greatest single improvement in the men's world half marathon record in history.

Gyanesh Kumar New Poll Panel Chief

  • The President Droupadi Murmu appointed Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Haryana Chief Secretary Vivek Joshi as Election Commissioner. This came hours after the meeting of the Prime Minister-headed high level committee where Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi asked the Government to defer the appointment until the Supreme Court decides on the petitions challenging the new appointment process.
  • Kumar took over as CEC as CEC Rajiv Kumar retired.

Bodoland, Once a Hotspot for Violent Insurgency, Hosts Assam Assembly

  • The first sitting of the Assam Legislative Assembly outside the state capital took place in Kokrajhar, the headquarters of the Bodoland Territorial Region. Chief Minister Himata Biswa Sarma called it a "historic day for Assam".
  • The Bodoland Territorial Region is spread across five districts – Kokrajhar, Baksa, Udalguri, Chirang and Tamulpur – and is covered by the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which provides autonomy to areas under it. The Bodos are the largest tribal community in Assam and the region had witnessed a violent insurgency beginning in the mid-1980s for a separate Bodo state.

Indian Army Displays 'Kamikaze' Drone at IIT Jammu Expo

  • The Indian Army displayed its advanced Kamikaze drone at the Science and Technology Expo held at IIT Jammu, highlighting its surveillance and attack capabilities.
  • The drone can carry payloads of 150 to 300 grams. Its flight duration is 30 minutes without a mini drone and 15-20 minutes with a mini drone, which is used for carrying out kamikaze attacks.
  • The drone is equipped with a small camera, and can operate in both day and night conditions, with a zoom feature for better surveillance.

'Conclave' Named Best Film at BAFTAs

  • Papal selection thriller "Conclave" and period drama "The Brutalist" were the big winners at the BAFTA Film Awards, winning four prizes each.
  • "Conclave", which had led nominations with 12 nods, won the most coveted award, best film, as well as outstanding British film, best adapted screenplay and best editing.
  • "The Brutalist", a three-and-a-half hour tale about a Hungarian immigrant architect trying to rebuild his life in the United States post-World War Two, had also been considered a frontrunner for best film. It won best director for Brady Corbet and best actor for its star, Adrien Brody.

Gujarat Launches G-SAFAL to Uplift 50,000 Underprivileged Women

  • The Gujarat government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, launched G-SAFAL (Gujarat Scheme for Antyodaya Families for Augmenting Livelihoods), a comprehensive initiative aimed at empowering underprivileged families, especially women, and promoting economic self-sufficiency. The scheme targets 50,000 Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) cardholder families across 25 talukas in 10 districts of Gujarat over the next five years.
  • Implemented by the Gujarat Livelihood Promotion Company Limited (Rural Development Department), G-SAFAL focuses on livelihood creation, financial inclusion, and social development to ensure sustainable economic growth for the poorest families in the state.

One-year BEd, MEd Courses to Return in 2026, 2-year and 4-year Options to Continue

  • The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is bringing back the one-year BEd and MEd programmes from 2026-27, almost 10 year after extending them to two years. The decision is part of new draft regulations, which were recently approved and will soon be opened for public feedback.
  • The one-year BEd programme will be available only to candidates who have completed a four-year degree or a postgraduate programme. Those with a three-year graduation will still need to opt for the existing two-year BEd course.
  • Similarly, the one-year MEd programme will be full-time, while a two-year part-time MEd will be introduced for working professionals like teachers and education administrators.

At 27th Position, ISB Leaves IIMs behind to Rank in FT's MBA B School Rankings 2025

  • The Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad is the best management college in India and 27th globally in the Financial Times (FT) rankings of MBA 2025. Of the total 100 B schools, 8 of them are from India. Last year, only 6 Indian business schools secured a spot in the FT rankings of MBA.
  • The rank of the ISB improved this year as against 31 in 2024 and 39 in 2023. The three-year average rank of the Institute is 32. It stood at 4 for the alumni network.
  • Other institutes that secured spots are IIM-Ahmedabad at 31, IIM-Bangalore at 57, IIM-Calcutta at 61, and IIM Lucknow 71.
  • Additionally, this year two new IIMs joined the list IIM-Indore at 69, Kozhikode campus which ranked 86 in MBA.
