  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr, one of President Donald Trump's most controversial cabinet picks, was sworn in as the next US Health and Human Services Secretary.
  • The former presidential candidate will now oversee key health agencies with about 80,000 employees and a trillion-dollar budget. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle had questioned his baseless health claims and vaccine scepticism.
  • Kennedy was confirmed by a 52-48 vote. No Democrats backed him. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was the lone Republican to vote against Kennedy.

SEBI Unveils MITRA to Track Inactive Mutual Fund Folios

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) introduced the Mutual Fund Investment Tracing and Retrieval Assistant (MITRA), a platform designed to help investors track, trace, and reclaim inactive or unclaimed mutual fund folios. This move is aimed at addressing a growing issue in the mutual fund industry—investors losing access to their investments due to outdated contact details, unawareness, or lack of KYC compliance.
  • SEBI's MITRA provides investors with an industry-wide searchable database to track such unclaimed investments.
  • Additionally, MITRA promotes KYC compliance, helping investors update their details and reducing the number of non-KYC compliant folios, which are often at risk of fraudulent claims.

Suzlon Bags Order from Oyster Renewable to Supply Wind Turbine Generators

  • Suzlon Group secured a repeat order from Oyster Renewable to supply 64 wind turbine generators each having a rated capacity of 3.15 megawatts (MW).
  • It will supply 64 wind turbine generators (WTGs) of S144 series with Hybrid Lattice Towers (HLT) to Oyster Renewable in Madhya Pradesh.

Adani Green Withdraws from Controversial Renewable Energy Project in Sri Lanka

  • The Adani Group withdrew from a 484 megawatt (MW) wind project in northern Sri Lanka after the government in Colombo allegedly moved to renegotiate the terms of the project.
  • Adani Green Energy Ltd told Sri Lanka's Board of Investment that it would "respectfully withdraw" from the wind project following discussions with officials who indicated that fresh committees would be formed to "renegotiate the project proposal".
  • The wind project has been under intense scrutiny since the election of Sri Lanka's President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in September last year (2024), after he promised to cancel the corrupt project in the run-up to the elections.

Ellie: Asia's First Animatronic Elephant Debuts in Bengaluru

  • In a major step towards raising awareness about animal welfare, Asia's first life-sized animatronic elephant, Ellie, was introduced in Bengaluru. Created by PETA India and voiced by actor Dia Mirza, Ellie is designed to educate children about the harsh realities of elephant captivity. The initiative aims to instil compassion and empathy among young learners, helping them understand the struggles of animals used in entertainment.
  • Ellie is not just a static model; she is a hyper-realistic animatronic elephant that moves, blinks her eyes, and flaps her ears, mimicking the behavior of a real elephant. She narrates an interactive story about her separation from her mother, the cruelty she faced in a circus, and her eventual rescue to a sanctuary. By experiencing Ellie's story, students can better understand why elephants should not be used in circuses, processions, or for rides.

Warrican, Mooney Shine as ICC Players of the Month

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the Players of the Month for January 2025, recognising Jomel Warrican (West Indies) and Beth Mooney (Australia) for their outstanding performances. Warrican's brilliant spin bowling played a crucial role in West Indies' historic Test victory in Pakistan, earning him his maiden ICC Men's Player of the Month award. Meanwhile, Mooney's explosive batting was instrumental in Australia's dominant Ashes triumph, securing her the ICC Women's Player of the Month title.

RCB Announces Rajat Patidar as Captain for IPL 2025

  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru announced batter Rajat Patidar as their new captain for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. After the mega auctions in December last year (2024), it was likely that former skipper and star batter Virat Kohli will don the captain's hat again. However, few reports emerged which stated that Kohli himself opted out of the captaincy race. Patidar was among RCB's retained players before last year's mega auction and has the experience of leading Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI).

Rajasthan Royals Appoint Sairaj Bahutule as Spin Bowling Coach

  • Rajasthan Royals appointed former India all-rounder Sairaj Bahutule as spin bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2025 season.
  • Bahutule returned to the Royals having been a part of the setup from 2018-21. A stalwart in Indian domestic cricket, Bahutule has an impressive record of over 630 wickets and 6,000 runs in first-class cricket. Bahutule played for India in two Tests and eight ODIs and has since transitioned into a successful coaching career. He has mentored teams such as Mumbai, Bengal, Kerala and the Indian national men's team.

The 14th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum

  • The 14th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (14AFAF), with the theme 'Greening the Blue Growth in Asia-Pacific' was organised in New Delhi. The Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (AFAF) is a triennial event of the Asian Fisheries Society with its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This 14th AFAF was jointly organised by the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS), Kuala Lumpur; Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi; the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of India; and the Asian Fisheries Society Indian Branch (AFSIB), Mangalore. This prestigious event was hosted in India for the 2nd time after the 8AFAF held at Kochi in 2007.
  • The 14th AFAF brings together key players from the fisheries and aquaculture sectors and will host around 1,000 delegates from 24 countries, including researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders.

President's Rule Imposed in Manipur

  • Four days after N. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister, the Centre announced that President's rule was imposed in Manipur and the state assembly placed under suspended animation. This closes a chapter and opens another in the state roiled by ethnic violence since May 2023.
  • Before President's rule was imposed, a security plan was prepared and the state police and intelligence agencies were monitoring movements of certain individuals to prevent any untoward incident.

Aero Club of France Honours Tom Cruise for Aviation Excellence

Prize Distribution Ceremony of Defence Innovation Challenge for Excellence 2024

  • The grand finale and prize distribution ceremony of the Defence Innovation Challenge for Excellence (DICE-2024) was organised during Aero India 2025 in Bengaluru. The competition witnessed an overwhelming response, attracting applications from 47 cities across 17 states. After rigorous screening across three levels, 24 start-ups advanced to the grand finale, with winners selected across three categories: Revenue Stage, Pre-Revenue Stage, and Idea Stage. These are:

Government revises Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) guidelines

  • The agriculture ministry revised guidelines for the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), increasing the procurement limit of crops to 25% from 20%. The guidelines were revised to encourage states to implement the MIS. The MIS is implemented on the request of the state/UT government for procurement of various perishable agricultural/horticultural commodities such as tomato, onion, potato, etc, for which minimum support price (MSP) is not applicable and there is a reduction of at least 10% in market prices in states/UTs as compared to the rates of the previous normal season.

ICAI Gets New President, Vice President for 2025-26

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in its 26th Council elected its new president and vice president for the term 2025-26. CA Charanjot Singh Nanda was elected the new ICAI president and CA Prasanna Kumar D was elected the vice president of ICAI. The baton was passed from CA Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal to CA Charanjot Singh Nanda and from CA Charanjot Singh Nanda to CA Prasanna Kumar D.
  • CA Charanjot Singh Nanda, FCA, the 73rd president of ICAI is a Fellow Member and has been a practicing Chartered Accountant for the last 34 years since 1991.
  • CA Prasanna Kumar D holds a Bachelor's degree in Zoology from the prestigious Loyola College, Chennai and an MA in Sociology from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. He completed his Chartered Accountancy in 1984 and has been a fellow Member of ICAI with more than three decades of experience.

IIM Ahmedabad, IIFT Get Spot in QS International Trade Rankings 2025 MBA and Master's

  • Two Indian Master's and MBA programmes secured a position in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) International Trade Rankings 2025 MBA and Master's released in February 2025. IIM Ahmedabad is the best performer among the Indian institutes. The other Indian MBA programme that secured a spot on the list is the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT).
