India's Rank in Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024

  • Corruption remains a significant global challenge, affecting governance, democracy, and development. In the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024, released by Transparency International, India ranked at 96th position out of 180 countries, with a score of 38—a decline from 39 in 2023 and 40 in 2022. The CPI evaluates nations based on perceived levels of public sector corruption, using a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
  • Denmark (1st) is the least corrupt nation, followed by Finland (2nd) and Singapore (3rd).
  • South Sudan, Somalia, Venezuela, and Syria were ranked among the most corrupt nations.

Senate Confirms Tulsi Gabbard as National Intelligence Director

  • Tulsi Gabbard, one of President Donald Trump's most controversial cabinet picks, was confirmed as director of national intelligence by a narrow vote in the Senate.
  • The former Democratic congresswoman was approved to oversee the US spy agencies by a Republican majority, with a vote of 52-48.
  • Her confirmation marks another cabinet victory for Trump as the Senate moves swiftly to confirm his remaining nominees.

THDC India Enters Thermal Energy Sector

  • THDC India started commercial operations of a 660-MW unit at its Khurja Power Plant in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, marking an entry into the domestic thermal energy sector.
  • The project, with a total capacity of 1,320 MW (2×660 MW), is being developed at an investment of Rs. 13,000 crore. The second unit is expected to begin operations soon. Equipped with modern technologies like Flue Gas Desulfurisation (FGD), the plant aims to enhance India's power generation while ensuring environmental sustainability.

IOC, BPCL to Sign Multibillion-dollar LNG Purchase Deals with Adnoc

  • Two of India's biggest state-run oil companies will sign agreements to buy liquefied natural gas from Abu Dhabi National Oil Co, as the world's most populous nation looks to secure long-term supplies to meet growing energy demand.
  • Indian Oil Corp, the nation's biggest refiner, will buy up to 1.2 million tons a year of LNG from Adnoc, valued at over $7 billion for the 14-year period of the deal starting 2026. Bharat Petroleum Corp. is looking to receive 2.5 million tons of the fuel from the UAE company over five years starting April, with an option to extend it by another five years.  
  • Adnoc, which is competing with Qatar to secure buyers for LNG, has been offering lower prices and more flexible terms than its Gulf neighbour.

Mastercard Launches Anti-Money Laundering Service 'TRACE' to Combat Financial Crime in Asia Pacific

  • Mastercard officially launched of TRACE (Trace Financial Crime) in Asia Pacific, a sophisticated network-level solution that harnesses artificial intelligence to identify and prevent money laundering and financial crime. 
  • Powered by timely and large-scale payments data from multiple financial institutions, TRACE provides holistic intelligence beyond an individual financial institution's soloed view, enabling tracing of financial crime across a payments network. The groundbreaking crime-fighting solution has been implemented in the Philippines' Real-Time Payment network, making it the second market in the world to offer the service after the United Kingdom.

  • Mumbai bagged the West Zone Under-14 League title by finishing top in the zonal tournament. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik informed that MCA will be grant Rs. 25 lakh as prize money to the winners.
  • The tournament serves as a crucial platform for nurturing young talent and providing players with opportunities to develop their skills on a competitive stage. Five teams participate in this tournament every year— Mumbai, Saurashtra, Baroda, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Shikhar Dhawan Named as Event Ambassador

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Inaugurates India Energy Week 2025

  • Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurated the third edition of the India Energy Week 2025 at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi. Stating that India was not facing any energy deficit, he said that as part of adopting clean energy, the country was installing massive LNG storage infrastructure and increasing the production of bio fuels to help achieve 20% usage of green energy. The bio fuel adoption is planned to be achieved through the provision of incentives and subsidies for electrolysers.

Amending CLNDA: India's Gateway to Nuclear Expansion

  • India announced plans to amend the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CLNDA) and the Atomic Energy Act. The amendments aim to resolve long-standing concerns of foreign nuclear companies, facilitating investment and the execution of stalled projects like Electricité de France (EDF) – Six EPR1650 reactors in Maharashtra (Jaitapur), Westinghouse Electric Company – Six AP1000 reactors in Andhra Pradesh (Kovvada) and Expansion into Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology for future nuclear projects.
  • The proposed changes mark a shift from the government's earlier stance of not amending the Act and are expected to help India meet its ambitious 100 GW nuclear power capacity target by 2047.

India-Egypt Joint Special Forces Exercise 'CYCLONE-III'

  • India and Egypt launched the third edition of their joint special forces exercise, 'CYCLONE-III', at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. This exercise, being held from February 10 to 23, 2025, is a crucial part of the growing military cooperation between the two nations. It follows the second edition held in Egypt in January 2024 and aims to enhance interoperability and strategic coordination between their special forces.
  • The India-Egypt Joint Special Forces Exercise CYCLONE-III is designed to strengthen military collaboration, focusing on special operations tactics, counter-terrorism drills, and advanced military strategies. Both countries have deployed 25 personnel each, with the Indian contingent comprising troops from two Special Forces Battalions, and the Egyptian team including members from the Special Forces Group and Task Force of the Egyptian Special Forces.

India's Mightiest Cargo Drone, CargoMax 20KHC, Debuts at Aero India 2025

  • At the Aero India 2025 air show in Bengaluru, Bengaluru-based drone manufacturer Scandron introduced the CargoMax 20KHC, India's most powerful cargo drone. With a payload capacity of 200 kg, this autonomous aerial logistics platform is built to support the Indian armed forces, paramilitary units, and emergency response teams. To enhance accessibility for defence clients, Scandron has set up a manufacturing facility in Ladakh for the production of the drone.
  • The CargoMax 20KHC boasts an operational range of 15km and an altitude ceiling of 6,000 metres above sea level. It is engineered to operate in demanding environments, including high-altitude regions, deserts, and naval zones.

UK Offers Indian Students Chance to Study, Live through this Special Visa Route

  • The United Kingdom government started the application process for the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme 2025. The scheme offers residents and Indians the opportunity to live, study, travel, and work in both the UK and India for up to two years. Indian nationals aged between 18-30 must enter the ballot at –gov.uk– to be considered for one of the 3,000 spots available under the scheme.
  • The ballot is scheduled to open at 2:30 pm (IST) between February 18 and February 20 at the same time. Applicants do not need to pay to enter the ballot. Successful entries will be picked at random by the concerned authorities. Those under the Youth Mobility Scheme visa will not be selected.

  • Justice Laxmi Narayana Alishetty, Justice Anilkukumar Jukanti, and Justice Sujana Kalasikam were appointed as Additional Judges of the Telangana High Court on July 31, 2023.
