UK Becomes First Country to Criminalise AI-Generated Child Abuse Content

  • The United Kingdom is taking a historic step in the fight against child sexual abuse by becoming the first country to criminalise AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The British government introduced strict legal measures to tackle the exploitation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the creation and distribution of child abuse content. These measures aim to prevent the misuse of generative AI tools for the production of CSAM and ensure severe punishments for offenders.
  • the UK Home Office announced a series of legislative changes aimed at curbing AI-generated CSAM. These laws will be part of a broader Crime and Policing Bill, expected to be tabled in Parliament in the coming weeks. The move comes in response to growing concerns that AI-powered tools are being used to create highly realistic CSAM, making it easier to spread and harder to detect.

Forbes List of Most Powerful Countries: America Tops

  • Forbes released its 2025 list of the world's 10 most powerful countries, with the United States leading the global rankings, followed by China in second place and Israel rounding up the list at the tenth spot. The rankings are based on several critical factors including leadership, economic influence, political power, great international alliances and military strength. According to Forbes, this ranking method has been developed by BAV Group researchers led by Professor David Reibstein of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and associated with US News & World Report.
  • Below are the world's top 10 most powerful nations in 2025, along with India's standing and ranking on the list:
  • The US stands at the top of the rank with a GDP of $30.34 trillion and with a population of 34.5 crore.
  • China is the second most powerful country, with a GDP of $19.53 trillion and a population of 1.419 billion.
  • Russia, with a $2.2 trillion GDP and a population of 84 million, ranks third on the list of the world's most powerful countries.
  • The United Kingdom is fourth on the list this year, with a GDP of $3.73 trillion and a population of 69 million.
  • Germany ranks fifth on the list. It possesses a $4.92 trillion economy and has a population of 8.54 crore.
  • Due to the combination of economic power, technological advancement and military strength, South Korea was ranked sixth on the list. It has a GDP of $1.95 trillion and a population of 5.17 crore.
  • France ranks in the world with a GDP of $3.28 trillion and a population of 6.65 crore.
  • Japan, with a GDP of $4.39 trillion and a population of 12.37 million, ranks eighth.
  • Saudi Arabia ranks ninth with a GDP of $1.14 trillion and a population of 3.39 crore.
  • Israel ranks tenth on the list this year. It has a GDP of $550.91 billion and a population of 93.8 lakh.
  • India ranks 12th among the world's most powerful countries, with its GDP estimated at $3.55 trillion and a population of 1.43 billion.

Panama Withdraws From China's Belt and Road Initiative

  • Panama will not renew its participation in China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), President José Raúl Mulino announced. The decision makes Panama the first Latin American country to withdraw from the global infrastructure initiative.
  • The decision came during a meeting between Mulino and US Secretary of State Rubio, who issued a warning to the Panamanian leader: immediately reduce Chinese influence over the Panama Canal or face potential retaliation from the US.
  • Panama initially joined the initiative in 2017 under a previous administration.

India's First White Tiger Breeding Centre Approved in MP

  • The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) approved India's first white tiger breeding centre in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district. This initiative marks a significant step in wildlife conservation, especially since Rewa is historically linked to the last known wild white tiger. The project, initially approved in principle in 2011, will be established in Govindgarh, near the state's only white tiger safari in Mukundpur. The breeding centre is expected to enhance biodiversity conservation, promote wildlife tourism, and create job opportunities for the local population.
  • The centre is part of a revised master plan for the Maharaja Martand Singh Judeo White Tiger Safari and Zoo in Mukundpur.
  • Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla emphasized the state's commitment to biodiversity conservation.

Ten Russian Exhibitors to Participate in India Energy Week

  • Around 10 exhibitors from Russia will participate in the India Energy Week (IEW), the second largest energy event globally.
  • India Energy Week 2025 is scheduled to take place from February 11-14 in New Delhi. IEW 2025, spanning over 1 lakh square metres, will be the second-largest energy event globally in terms of participation, exhibition space and sessions.
  • This time more than 700 exhibitors have booked the space to display their products which is an increase of 57 per cent from the last edition held in Goa.
  • Exhibitors from India, the UK, UAE, Belgium, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Turkiye, Canada, Japan, France, Singapore, the US, Netherlands, Germany, and Norway will display their products during the event.

Ratan Tata's Aide Shantanu Naidu Promoted to New Position at Tata Motors

  • Shantanu Naidu, a close aide of late industrialist Ratan Tata, was promoted to General Manager, head - strategic initiatives at Tata Motors, marking a significant milestone in his journey with the Tata Group.
  • An automobile design engineer, Naidu first gained recognition in 2014 for developing a safety innovation to protect homeless dogs from speeding cars. His work caught the attention of Ratan Tata who, known for his love for animals, invested in the project and took Naidu under his wing.

Standard Chartered Appoints Ramos as New Chair

  • Standard Chartered appointed former South African bank CEO Maria Ramos as new chair to succeed Jose Vinals, who is approaching the end of his nine-year term.
  • Ramos, 65, joined Standard Chartered's board as an independent non-executive director in January 2021 and was the head of South African bank ABSA Group Ltd from 2009 to 2019, overseeing its exit from the ownership of Britain's Barclays.

Japan's H-3 Rocket Successfully Launches Michibiki No. 6 Satellite

  • Japan's space agency successfully launched a navigation satellite on its new flagship H3 rocket as the country seeks to have a more precise location positioning system of its own.
  • The H3 rocket carrying the Michibiki 6 satellite lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center on a south-western Japanese island.
  • Japan currently has the quasi-zenith satellite system, or QZSS, with four satellites for a regional navigation system that first went into operation in 2018. The Michibiki 6 is the fifth of its network.
  • Michibiki's signals are used to supplement American GPS and will further improve positioning data for smartphones, car and maritime navigation and drones.

Jonathan Clinches air Pistol Gold at National Games

  • Fifteen-year-old Bengaluru shooter Jonathan Antony delivered a grand performance on the biggest domestic stage when he outwitted Paris Olympics bronze-medallist Sarabjot Singh and the more fancied Saurabh Chaudhary to clinch the 10m air pistol gold at the National Games in Uttaralkhand.
  • Jonathan, whose shooting career took wings when he won gold in the CBSE South Zone Rifle Shooting Competition in 2022 while studying in eighth standard, shot a superb 240.7 for Karnataka in the final and overcame the challenge of Services veterans Ravinder Singh (silver, 240.3) and Gurpreet Singh (bronze, 220.1) and Sarabjot, who won a bronze in the Paris Olympics' 10m air pistol mixed team event with Manu Bhaker last year (2024).

Hina Munawar Appointed First Female Manager for Pakistan Men's Cricket Team

  • In a historic move, the Pakistan Cricket Board or PCB appointed Hina Munawar as the first-ever woman operations manager for the national men's cricket team.
  • Munawar, an experienced police officer with a strong background in operations and security, will oversee team operations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and Tri-Nation Series.
  • While senior retired bureaucrat Naveed Akram Cheema will continue as team manager, Munawar's appointment has sparked curiosity amongst cricket fans, experts, and the media.
  • Munawar, who joined the PCB last year (2024), was also appointed manager of the Pakistan women's under-19 team for the Asia Cup.

Rashid Khan Becomes Highest T20 Wicket-taker

  • Afghanistan spin wizard Rashid Khan climbed to the top of the wicket-taking charts in all T20 cricket when he scalped his a record 632nd wicket in the format during the SA20 Qualifier 1 match for MI Cape Town against Pretoria Capitals.
  • Rashid dismissed Dunith Wellalage and surpassed former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo's tally of 631 wickets in 89 fewer innings in his 461st T20 match since making his format debut in a T20I for Afghanistan against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in October 2015.

  • The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) and IIT Indore launched AgriHub, a state-of-the-art AI-driven Centre of Excellence (CoE) aimed at transforming Indian agriculture. AgriHub seeks to address critical challenges in agriculture, such as drought, floods, and low productivity, through the integration of AI, Machine Learning (ML), and Deep Learning (DL). The initiative will empower farmers, researchers, and agribusinesses by fostering technological innovation, start-up incubation, and industry collaborations.

Sumita Dawra Chairs a Roundtable on Enhancing Social Security Coverage and Care Support for Women

  • In line with the vision for a Viksit Bharat@2047 – driven by women led development wherein 70% of women engaged in economic activities, laid out in the Union Budget 2025-26, a Roundtable Discussion on providing social security and care support to women was held in New Delhi under the chairpersonship of Ms. Sumita Dawra, Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment. Organised in collaboration with UNICEF, the meeting was attended by senior officials from Ministry of Labour & Employment, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, and representatives from international organisations (UNICEF, UNDP, ILO, World Bank) and academia (VVGNLI, IEG).

Indian Army and IIT Guwahati to Develop Epoxy Bamboo-based Composites

  • In a move towards innovation and self-reliance, the Indian Army's Gajraj Corps signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati for the research, design, and fabrication of epoxy bamboo-based composites.
  • Bamboo-based composites could replace traditional building materials used in the construction of bunkers in high-altitude areas.
  • The project will culminate in the construction of multiple defence works in high-altitude terrain for field trials, where they will be subjected to small arms fire and endure an entire weather cycle,.
  • The fabricated panels will provide the same level of protection, albeit with reduced weight, which will decrease the time and effort required for ferrying supplies, ultimately enhancing force preservation.

India Reaffirms Support to Bhutan

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, at a meeting with Bhutan's top military general, reaffirmed India's readiness to support Bhutan in capability enhancement for defence preparedness, including provisioning of defence equipment and assets to augment capacities of Bhutan, as per its national priorities and in line with India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy.
  • The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA) Lt Gen Batoo Tshering called on Singh in New Delhi and held discussions encompassing a variety of issues on bilateral relations.

Former German President Horst Kohler dies

  • Horst Kohler, who became Germany's President after being a financial engineer behind the reunification of Germany and the creation several decades later of the euro currency, died in Berlin. He was 81.
  • Despite having served as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kohler was little known politically in Germany before becoming the country's President in 2004. Yet, he rose to popularity after taking office, serving much of his nearly six years alongside Chancellor Angela Merkel.
  • In 2010, a year into his second term, Kohler resigned abruptly amid a barrage of criticism over remarks he made about German soldiers serving in Afghanistan and on peacekeeping missions.
  • It was the first time in four decades that a German President had quit the post.
