India to Host BRICS Youth Entrepreneurship Meet in March 2025
India is set to host the BRICS Youth Council Entrepreneurship Working Group Meeting from March 3 to 7, 2025, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. This event, themed "Youth Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Growth," will bring together around 45 youth representatives from BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—to strengthen cooperation in entrepreneurship and innovation.
The discussions will focus on building a framework for young entrepreneurs across BRICS countries and enhancing their participation in global markets.
Netanyahu Appoints Eyal Zamir as New Chief of Israel Defense Forces
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Major General (Res.) Eyal Zamir as the new Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Zamir became the 24th Chief of Staff of IDF, replacing Lt Gen Herzi Halevi following his resignation in January.
Income Tax Relief Measures Announced in Budget 2025
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in February 2025 presented her a record eighth consecutive budget and announced several income tax relief measures to benefit taxpayers. These changes aim to reduce the tax burden, simplify filing procedures and encourage savings. The government raised tax slabs, increased the exemption limit and introduced benefits for small businesses. These steps are expected to boost disposable income and improve economic growth across different income groups.
Below are some the key income tax reliefs announced in the Budget 2025:
No Income Tax for Income up to Rs. 12 lakh
The biggest relief for taxpayers is that individuals earning up to Rs12 lakh per year will not have to pay any income tax. This will help middle-class and lower-income groups save more money.
Higher Standard Deduction for Salaried and Pensioners
The government has increased the standard deduction under the new tax regime to Rs. 75,000. This means that salaried individuals and pensioners can deduct Rs. 75,000 from their taxable income.
Higher TDS Limit on Rent Payments
The government has raised the TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) limit on rent from Rs. 2.4 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh per year.
China Astronauts Generate Rocket Fuel, Oxygen in Space Using Artificial Photosynthesis
China's Shenzhou-19 crew aboard the Tiangong space station created oxygen and ingredients for rocket fuel for the first time with the help of "artificial photosynthesis" technology.
The crew successfully conducted maiden in-orbit demonstration of the technology, thereby paving the way for future exploration of space, including crewed moon landing before 2030.

The Indian U19 women's cricket team scripted history by securing a dominant nine-wicket victory over South Africa in the ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup 2025 final at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This triumph marked India's second consecutive title in the tournament, solidifying its status as a powerhouse in women's cricket at the youth level. The star of the match, Gongadi Trisha, delivered an all-round performance, guiding India to a comprehensive win.
Wriddhiman Saha Retires
Bengal stalwart Wriddhiman Saha retired from all forms of cricket after playing the last group-stage match of the Ranji Trophy on February 1.
Saha played 40 Test matches for India and was widely regarded as the best keeper in the country in the red-ball format. His career never took off due to his batting abilities, which were never at par with the likes of MS Dhoni, who saw an incredible rise in his stature at the same time. After Dhoni retired from Test cricket, Saha was able to fix his place in the line-up but for only a brief time as the selectors and management decided to fast-track Rishabh Pant.
Wriddhiman Saha's biggest moment perhaps came in the Indian Premier League when he hit a century in the IPL final against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2014 season. Despite Saha's century, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) was not able to win the tournament.
Saha played IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans.
Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers Clinch Hockey India League 2024-25 Title
The exhilarating Men's Hockey India League 2024-25 season came to an end as Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers defeated Hyderabad Toofans 4-3 in the all-important final, in front of a jam-packed Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. Gonzalo Peillat and Amandeep Lakra) scored for Hyderabad Toofans while Jugraj Singh and Sam Lane found the back of the net to secure the title for the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers.
With this victory, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers also claimed the INR 3 crore prize money, while the Hyderabad Toofans received INR 2 crore for finishing as runners-up.
'Operation Eleven' To Manage Crowd during Maha Kumbh's 3rd 'Amrit Snan'
The Uttar Pradesh government put into place a special crowd management plan named 'Operation Eleven' for the 'Amrit Snan' on Basant Panchami at Maha Kumbh.
The plan, devised under strict instructions from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, ensures a "one-way traffic route" for devotees and smooth movement on pontoon bridges. To prevent overcrowding at the Triveni ghats, additional police forces were deployed and barricades were increased.
For the first time, Indo-Tibetan Border Police entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh governments for giving employment and livelihood opportunities to locals living along the India-China border. The plan conceived under the vibrant village programme (VVP) has so far covered 51 vibrant villages and 108 border villages for supplying vegetarian and non-vegetarian items worth Rs. 1 crore.
Navin Chawla, Former Chief Election Commissioner, Passes Away
Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Navin Chawla, who oversaw the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, passed away in Delhi. He was 79.
A retired 1969-batch IAS officer of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, he assumed office as an election commissioner in May 2005, and served in that role till April 20, 2009, after which he served as Chief Election Commissioner till July 29, 2010.
Indian-American vocalist and entrepreneur Chandrika Tandon, won a Grammy for her album 'Triveni' in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category at the 67th Grammy Awards. She shared the honour with her collaborators—South African flautist Wouter Kellerman and Japanese cellist Eru Matsumoto.
Other nominees in the Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album category included: Break of Dawn by Ricky Kej, Opus by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Chapter II: How Dark It Is Before Dawn by Anoushka Shankar, and Warriors of Light by Radhika Vekaria.
This is not Tandon's first Grammy recognition—she was previously nominated in 2011 for her album Om Namo Narayana: Soul Call in the Best Contemporary World Music Album category.

Textbooks in Indian Languages under Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme
The Union Budget 2025 introduced the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme, a new initiative to provide digital books in Indian languages for school and higher education students. Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, this scheme aims to make learning more accessible by offering study materials in regional languages.
Under this scheme, students across schools and universities will have access to textbooks and learning resources in digital formats. The move aligns with the government's push to integrate technology into education while promoting linguistic diversity.
Maharashtra to Set up Country's First AI University
Maharashtra is set to establish the first Artificial Intelligence (AI) university in the country and a task force has been formed for the planning and implementation of the project, state Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar has said.
The university will promote research and development in AI and related fields and will be a centre of excellence, encouraging collaboration between the industry, academia and government.
The task force includes experts from the academia, industry and government.
Britain's Ex PM Rishi Sunak Arrives In Jaipur, To Attend Literature Festival
Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak attended the city's annual literary event, the Jaipur Literature Festival, which concluded on February 3.
During the five-day event, Mr. Sunak's wife Akshata Murty, and her mother, Sudha Murty, who is a renowned author and Rajya Sabha MP, held a session titled "My Mother, Myself".
The 18th edition of the renowned literature festival was held at Hotel Clarks Amer in the Pink City. The event brought together leading voices from literature, politics, science and the arts, and serves as a forum for diverse perspectives and meaningful exchange.
This year's (2025) event featured over 300 luminaries such as Nobel laureates, Booker Prize-winners, journalists, policymakers, and acclaimed writers.
The participants included Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Dufflo, Amol Palekar, Amitabh Kant, Eric Garcetti, Kailash Satyarthi, Javed Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Yuvan Aves, Shahu Patole and Kallol Bhattacharjee.
