Trump Announces Kevin Marino Cabrera as the Ambassador to Panama

  • US President-elect Donald Trump announced that Miami-Dade county commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera will serve as the ambassador to Panama.
  • The announcement came after Trump's threat to reassert the control of the United States over the Panama Canal. The US administered the canal for several decades and then handed it over to the Central American country in 1999.
  • Before becoming the Miami-Dade county commissioner, Cabrera was the director of Trump's 2020 re-election campaign in Florida.

RBI Sets Up 8-member Panel to Develop Framework for Ethical Use of AI

  • The Reserve Bank announced the setting up of an eight-member committee to develop a framework for responsible and ethical enablement of artificial intelligence (FREE-AI) in the financial sector.
  • Headed by IIT Bombay professor Pushpak Bhattacharyya (Department of Computer Science and Engineering), the panel will assess the current level of adoption of AI in financial services, globally as well as in India.
  • It will also review regulatory and supervisory approaches on AI with focus on the financial sector globally.
  • The panel will also identify potential risks associated with AI, if any, and recommend an evaluation, mitigation and monitoring framework and consequent compliance requirements for financial institutions, including banks, NBFCs, FinTechs, PSOs, etc.

Centre Forms Tribunal to Review ULFA's Status

  • The Centre set up an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal to determine whether there is sufficient cause to declare the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), including all its factions, wings and front organisations, as an unlawful association.
  • The tribunal is headed by Justice Michael Zothankhuma of the Gauhati High Court.
  • The MHA decided to constitute the tribunal almost a month after it extended the ban on the ULFA for the next five years for its role in continuing to work to secede Assam from India and maintain links with other insurgent groups for extortion and violence.

Pharmed Ltd Chairman Emeritus Krishan Kumar Aurora Passes Away

  • Pharmed Limited and BioPlus Group announced that its chairman emeritus Krishan Kumar Aurora passed away at the age of 88.
  • Aurora's career spanned more than six decades. After graduating from Bombay University, he began his professional journey as an accountant with AF Fergusons, before moving on to Boots Pure Drug Co. (India) Ltd In 1961, he started his career with Smith Kline & French (India) Ltd, eventually rising to the role of Managing Director and later becoming International Vice President for Southeast Asia.
  • In 1990, Aurora took over Pharmed Limited, transforming it into a trusted and respected name in the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry.

President Confers Bal Puraskar

  • President Droupadi Murmu presented the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar to 17 children, recognising their exceptional courage and outstanding achievements across diverse fields, including art, culture, sports and innovation.
  • The award celebrates extraordinary accomplishments in seven categories: art and culture, bravery, innovation, science and technology, social service, sports and environment.
  • The honourees, seven boys and ten girls selected from 14 states and Union territories, were presented with a medal, certificate and citation booklet.
  • Among them was Keya Hatkar, a 14-year-old author and disability advocate, recognised for her excellence in art and culture.
  • The President underlined the importance of nurturing and celebrating young talents.

Govt. Distributes Property Cards under SVAMITVA Scheme

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed over 50 lakh property cards under SVAMITVA Scheme to property owners in over 46,000 villages in 200 districts across 10 States and 2 Union territories.
  • SVAMITVA scheme was launched by Prime Minister, in April 2020, with a vision to enhance the economic progress of rural India by providing 'Record of Rights' to households possessing houses in inhabited areas in villages through the latest surveying drone technology.
  • The scheme also helps facilitate monetization of properties and enabling institutional credit through bank loans; reducing property-related disputes; facilitating better assessment of properties and property tax in rural areas and enabling comprehensive village-level planning.
