Shaktikanta Das Earns A+ in Central Bank Report Card 2024 (29)

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das was awarded an A+ grade in the Central Bank Report Cards 2024, marking his second consecutive year of recognition. This accolade was presented by Global Finance during an event in Washington, D.C. The grades, ranging from "A+" to "F," assess central banks on their effectiveness in critical areas such as inflation control, economic growth targets, currency stability, and interest rate management.
  • Since 1994, Global Finance has published the Central Bank Report Cards annually.
  • The report grades central bank governors from nearly 100 key countries, territories, and regions, including the European Union and various central banks in the Caribbean and Africa.
  • Global Finance was established in 1987, making it a reputable source in the field of international finance.

NTPC and Indian Army Join Hands for Round-the-Clock Power Supply using Green Hydrogen

  • State-owned power generator NTPC partnered with the Indian Army to set up a Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh. This will provide a stable power supply using Green Hydrogen in off-grid Army locations. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone of this project.
  • NTPC designed this Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid system to operate independently, using hydrogen as an energy storage medium. This project will supply 200kW of power round-the-clock throughout the year.
  • This system will replace existing diesel gensets at off-grid Army locations, providing a sustainable power supply despite harsh winter conditions, where temperatures drop to -30°C at an altitude of 4,400 meters. NTPC will maintain the project for 25 years.

Sarvam AI Launches New Language Model for Indian Languages

  • Bengaluru-based start-up Sarvam AI launched a new large language model, Sarvam 1. The AI model is open-source and has been trained on 11 languages including Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi and English.
  • The 2-billion-parameter model was trained on 4 trillion tokens on a custom tokeniser curated by Sarvam on Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs. The company claims that the tokeniser is up to four times more efficient than other AI models which were trained on Indian languages.

Sharapova, Bryan Brothers Inducted into 2025 Tennis Hall of Fame Class

  • Five-time Grand Slam singles champion Maria Sharapova and the record-breaking American twins Bob and Mike Bryan were selected for the International Tennis Hall of Fame's Class of 2025. The induction ceremony is scheduled for August 23, 2025 at the Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, where the tennis icons will officially be honoured for their remarkable careers.
  • Sharapova's legacy includes being the first Russian woman to achieve the world No. 1 ranking in 2005. Her career highlights feature a career Grand Slam, placing her among just ten women to accomplish this feat, and a silver medal from the 2012 Olympics. Despite a 15-month suspension in 2016 due to a meldonium-related controversy, Sharapova's remarkable achievements, including nearly $40 million in prize money, have made her a global icon.
  • American twins Bob and Mike Bryan are celebrated as the most successful doubles team in tennis history. Their career boasts 16 Grand Slam titles, an Olympic gold medal, and a record 438 weeks as the world No. 1 team. Together, they hold an impressive 119 titles, including 39 ATP Masters 1000 championships.

Pan Pacific Open: Zheng Wins Third Title of 2024

  • China's Zheng Qinwen produced near-flawless serves and defeated American Sofia Kenin 7-6(5) 6-3 and captured the Pan Pacific Open title for her third trophy this season. Zheng hit 33 winners and fired off 16 aces as she took the victory in an hour and 52 minutes under a closed roof after heavy rain interrupted the first set.

Chirag Chikkara Leads India to Gold at U23 World Wrestling Championships

  • Chirag Chikkara made history by becoming only the third Indian wrestler to win the Under-23 World Championship in Tirana (Albania), contributing to India's impressive total of nine medals at the tournament. Competing in the men's freestyle 57kg category, Chikkara secured a thrilling victory with a narrow 4-3 win over Abdymalik Karachov of Kyrgyzstan in the final seconds of the match.
  • Indian wrestlers won 9 medals (1 Gold, 2 Silver  and 6 Bronze) at the Under-23 World Championships in Tirana, Albania. The medal winners are: Chirag Chikkara (Men's freestyle 57kg) - Gold,  Anjli (Women's freestyle 59kg) - Silver, Vishvajit More (Men's Greco Roman 55kg) - Bronze, Monika (Women's freestyle 68kg) - Bronze, Neha Sharma (Women's freestyle 57kg) - Bronze, Shiksha (Women's freestyle 65kg) - Bronze, Abhishek Dhaka (Men's freestyle 61kg) - Bronze, Sujeet Kalkal (Men's freestyle 70kg) - Bronze, Vicky Chahar (Men's freestyle 97kg) - Bronze.

NCGG Completes 34th Training for Maldivian Civil Servants, Boosting Indo-Maldivian Ties

  • The National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG) successfully concluded its 34th Capacity Building Programme (CBP) for Maldivian civil servants in New Delhi. The two-week program, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), represented the second initiative under a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Maldives' Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer. The MoU, effective from 2024 to 2029, aims to train 1,000 Maldivian civil servants, reinforcing India's commitment to enhancing governance across the Maldives.
  • NCGG's training initiatives have supported civil servants from 33 countries, including Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka, emphasizing India's commitment to global good governance.

  • The 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2024 concluded with a valedictory session led by Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Power, Manohar Lal, at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. PM Modi, Spanish PM Inaugurate C295 Military Transport Aircraft Setup

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez inaugurated a new facility in Vadodara, Gujarat that will produce C295 military transport aircraft. The first private sector facility to build military aircraft in India will get a boost as additional orders are being processed that will bring more work to the Indian defence ecosystem.
  • As per reports, the facility will produce a total of 52 aircraft - 40 for the Air Force and 12 for the Navy and Coast Guard. The additional order for 15 aircraft for the Navy and Coast Guard - 3 will be bought off the shelf and rest produced in India - has been okayed by the defence ministry and is being processed.

Justice K. S. Puttaswamy, Key Petitioner in Right to Privacy Case, Passes Away

  • Justice K. S. Puttaswamy, former Karnataka High Court judge and the lead petitioner in the seminal 'right to privacy case', passed away at the age of 98.
  • Justice Puttaswamy enrolled as an advocate in 1952 after studying at Maharaja College in Mysuru and the Government Law College in Bengaluru. He practised at the Mysore High Court before it came to be known as the Karnataka High Court and would go on to become an Additional Government Advocate before being appointed as a judge of the Karnataka High Court on November 28, 1977.
  • Following his retirement in 1986, he was appointed as the first Vice-Chairman of the Bengaluru bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal. He also served as the chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh backward Classes Commission.

  • Vigilance Awareness Week is an initiative by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to combat corruption in India through awareness, education, and active participation of citizens. This week-long observance serves to strengthen ethics and transparency within governance and public administration.
  • The Vigilance Awareness Week 2024 is being observed from October 28 to November 3, 2024 under the theme 'Culture of Integrity for Nation's Prosperity.'
  • CVC is an apex vigilance institution that exercises superintendence over the vigilance administration of the organizations where the executive powers of the Government of India extends.
  • It is an apex Integrity Institution, having complete independence and autonomy in its functions.
  • The CVC was set up through the Resolution of the Government of India on the recommendations of the Committee on Prevention of Corruption formed under the Chairmanship of Shri K. Santhanam in 1964.
  • It was given statutory status through CVC Act 2003.
  • The CVC is not controlled by any Ministry/Department. It is responsible to the Parliament.

Bibhab Talukdar Wins IUCN's Top Conservation Leadership Award

  • Assam-based conservation scientist Bibhab Kumar Talukdar was awarded the prestigious Harry Messel Award for Conservation Leadership by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Abu Dhabi. This honour, awarded during the 5th IUCN SSC Leaders' Meeting, acknowledged his groundbreaking contributions to species conservation, particularly for Asian rhinos, through both leadership and on-ground initiatives. Talukdar is an influential conservationist associated with IUCN SSC since 1991 and became Chair of the Asian Rhino Specialist Group in 2008.
  • Talukdar has played a pivotal role in organising three Asian Rhino States meetings in Indonesia, India, and Nepal, resulting in a landmark commitment to protect Asian rhino species. He has also been a key driver of the Indian Rhino Vision 2020, which successfully translocated 22 rhinos to Manas National Park from 2008 to 2022.
