Indonesia Leader Sworn in with Largest Cabinet in Decades

  • Dignitaries from 33 countries, including India were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
  • Subianto, was the Defence Minister in former President Widodo's government, brings with him the experience of serving both the political and military scene of the country.

Pakistan Cabinet Approves Controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill

  • The Pakistan Cabinet approved the proposed draft of the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after seeking consensus from the coalition partners.
  • The coalition government tabled the proposed judicial reforms bill in the Senate and the National Assembly on October 20.
  • Ahead of the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz met with President Asif Ali Zardari for detailed discussions on the proposed constitutional amendment, during which the president was briefed and consulted.

Abhyuday Jindal New President of Indian Chamber of Commerce

  • Abhyuday Jindal was named president of Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) an industry body founded in 1925 that has its headquarters in Kolkata.
  • Jindal who graduated from Boston University with a degree in Economics and Business Management is the Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, a stainless steel manufacturer with annual turnover of Rs. 38,000 crore.
  • Jindal took over at a ceremony in Delhi, which was attended by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
  • Brij Bhushan Agarwal assumed the role of Senior Vice President of ICC. Agarwal brings over three decades of experience in the steel and ferroalloys industry.
  • Parthiv Vikram Neotia assumed the role of Vice President of ICC. He is the Executive Director of Ambuja Neotia, a conglomerate with interests in real estate, healthcare, hospitality, and education.

ESA's Moonlight Program Aims to Establish Lunar Communication, Navigation

  • The European Space Agency (ESA) launched its ambitious Moonlight programme, aiming to create a dedicated satellite constellation for telecommunication and navigation services on the Moon. This initiative seeks to make essential services like satellite navigation, video conferencing and data sharing as seamless on the lunar surface as they are on Earth.
  • The Moonlight Lunar Communications and Navigation Services (LCNS) programme is a collaboration between ESA and a consortium led by space systems developer Telespazio, with support from the UK and Italian space agencies. The project aims to enable precise lunar landings, facilitate surface mobility, and establish a high-speed, low-latency communication network between Earth and the Moon. This infrastructure will be crucial for humanity's long-term presence on the Moon and will significantly reduce operational costs for future missions.

New Zealand Wins ICC Women's T20 World Cup after 23 Years

  • New Zealand lifted the ICC Women's T20 World Cup after 23 years at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in United Arab Emirates. New Zealand defeated South Africa with 32 runs.
  • Amelia Kerr was named player of the series.

India's Deepika Kumari Wins Sixth Archery World Cup Final Medal with Silver in Mexico

  • Indian archer Deepika Kumari won her sixth World Cup final medal. Kumari won the silver medal in the Archery World Cup final with a 0-6 loss against Chinese Li Jiaman in the final in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
  • In the semis, Kumari edged out Tokyo Olympics mixed team bronze medalist and Paris Olympics women's team bronze medallist Alejandra Valencia of Mexico 6-4. Kumari had scored a 6-0 win over Chinese Yang Xiaolei in the quarters.

India Delivers Haemo-dialysis Machines to PNG, Supplies Aid to Lebanon

  • India fulfilled a significant commitment made during the third Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC III) Summit by sending its first consignment of 12 Haemo-dialysis machines to Papua New Guinea (PNG). Also in response to rising tensions and ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon, India dispatched the first tranche of a 33-ton consignment of medical supplies as part of a humanitarian effort to support Lebanon.
  • India has consistently provided aid to its global partners, offering vaccines, essential medicines, food, and other critical resources.

NHRC Concludes National Conference, Advocates for Older Persons' Rights

  • On its 31st Foundation Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) organised a day-long national conference on the 'Rights of Older Persons' at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. During the keynote address, Acting Chairperson Vijaya Bharathi Sayani emphasised the invaluable role of elders as the architects of the nation's history, keepers of cultural heritage, and foundational pillars of families.
  • Vijaya Bharathi Sayani described elders as "the architects of our nation's history" and emphasised their importance in families and society.
  • She called for respect, compassion, and dignity for older persons during their twilight years.

Chhattisgarh's Northern Tribal Belt Gets First Airport

  • A domestic airport was inaugurated in the Surguja region, bringing air connectivity for the first time to Chhattisgarh's northern tribal belt.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Maa Mahamaya Airport in Ambikapur city of Surguja district.
  • Sprawled across 365 acres of land, the airport was built at a cost of Rs. 80 crore. A 72-seater aircraft can land on its airstrip and the airport has the capacity to handle 5 lakh passengers annually.

Switzerland Joins European Air Defence Initiative Sky Shield

  • Switzerland joined a German-led effort aimed at bolstering Europe's defence against air strikes, as the traditionally neutral country continues to recalibrate its policy after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
  • Armament Chief Urs Loher signed a declaration to join the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). The project involves countries jointly procuring air- and missile-defence systems and is designed to increase cost efficiency and flexibility.
  • Germany launched ESSI in 2022 with the aim of making the continent less vulnerable to air strikes at a time of increasing geopolitical tension. Some 21 nations, including the UK and Turkey, have signed up.

India, Oman Joint Naval Exercise 'Naseem Al Bahr' off Goa' Coast Concludes

  • Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman concluded their bilateral naval exercise, 'Naseem Al Bahr' off the coast of Goa.
  • As per reports, the exercise was conducted in two phases, with the harbour phase that lasted from October 13 to October 15, which was followed by the sea phase which was conducted from October 16 to October 18.
  • As part of harbour activities, personnel from both Navies engaged in professional interactions, including Subject Matter Expert Exchanges and planning conferences. In addition to this, sports fixtures and social engagements were also held.
  • During the sea phase of the exercise, ships carried out various evolutions, including gun firings at surface inflatable targets, close-range anti-aircraft firings, manoeuvres, and Replenishment at Sea Approaches (RASAPS).

Police Commemoration Day

  • India marks Police Commemoration Day on October 21 every year to remember the policemen who died in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959. The day is dedicated to paying tribute to the bravery and service of police personnel who protect the nation.
  • On October 21, 1959, during a period of heightened tensions along the India-China border, 10 on-duty Indian policemen were ambushed by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Aksai Chin. The policemen were engaged in a reconnaissance mission when they were fired upon without provocation.
  • This assault resulted in the deaths and injuries of several officers. The bodies of the deceased were returned 23 days later and were cremated with full military honours.
  • To pay tribute to the memory of these brave police personnel who sacrificed their lives and to honour all police officers rendering their services to the nation both domestically and internationally, the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police decided in January 1960 to observe October 21 as Police Commemoration Day.

Jharkhand Cabinet Approves Rs. 530 crore for New Colleges, Polytechnics Projects

  • The Jharkhand Cabinet approved a series of educational initiatives totalling Rs. 530 crore aimed at establishing new engineering colleges and polytechnics in the state. Key projects include the construction of the Government Polytechnic in Chakulia, Jamshedpur, estimated at Rs.134.18 crore; the Government Engineering College in Jamshedpur, with a budget of Rs. 254.93 crore; and another government polytechnic in Potka, Jamshedpur, costing Rs. 136.13 crore.
  • In addition to these projects, the cabinet sanctioned Rs. 42.83 crore for the second phase of the Netarhat Tourism Project and plans to establish institutes similar to the Netarhat Residential School in Kolhan, Santhal Pargana, and North Chotanagpur divisions.
