The first ASEAN-India Track 1 Cyber Policy Dialogue was held in Singapore.

  • A key ASEAN-India policy dialogue was held in Singapore during which both sides exchanged views on cyber threat, national cyber policies, and the recent developments in the ICT domain at the United Nations.
  • The First ASEAN-India Track 1 Cyber Policy Dialogue explored cooperation in capacity building and training to identify specific areas of activities.
  • The dialogue was co-chaired by Amit A Shukla, who is Joint Secretary in the Cyber Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, and Jeffrey Ian Dy, the Undersecretary for Infrastructure Management, Cyber Security, and Upskilling, Department of Information and Communications Technology of the Philippines, the Philippines was India's Country Coordinator for ASEAN-India dialogue relations.

Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) 2024

  • The Government of the Philippines partnered with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and hosted the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) from October 14 to 18, 2024 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila. The APMCDRR is the main platform in Asia and the Pacific to monitor, review and enhance cooperation for the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 at the regional level.
  • The conference brought together governments, intergovernmental, international, national and civil society organizations, the private sector, science, academia and stakeholder groups to accelerate progress in reducing disaster risk.
  • As the first regional platform since the adoption of the Political Declaration of the Sendai Framework Midterm Review, the APMCDRR 2024 was held under the working theme "Surge to 2030: Enhancing ambition in Asia-Pacific to accelerate disaster risk reduction".

HDFC Opens First Singapore Branch to Expand Global Presence

  • HDFC Bank officially opened its first branch in Singapore as part of its strategy to expand its international operations. Granted a wholesale banking license by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the bank aims to offer a variety of financial products and services to residents of Singapore.
  • The branch was inaugurated by Rakesh Singh, Group Head of International Banking, in the presence of Gaurav Khandelwal, CEO of HDFC Bank Singapore, and senior management officials.
  • With the addition of Singapore, HDFC now operates five international branches: Hong Kong, Bahrain, Dubai, Singapore, and an IFSC Banking Unit in Gujarat International Finance Tech City (GIFT City).

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia Inaugurates International 6G Symposium

  • Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Union Minister of Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, inaugurated the International 6G Symposium alongside the ITU-WTSA24 and IMC 24 events. He emphasised the transformative potential of 6G technology in driving economic growth and innovation, stating that the shift towards software-centric approaches offers a significant opportunity for India, which boasts a large pool of engineering and software talent. Scindia projected that India will contribute 10% of global 6G patents through the Bharat 6G Alliance, reinforcing the nation's ambition to lead in this new technological era.
  • The symposium, organised by the Bharat 6G Alliance, highlights a collaborative effort among industry, academia, and research institutions to establish India as a global leader in 6G technology. The alliance aims to influence global standards through organizations like ITU and 3GPP. Scindia reaffirmed India's commitment to being the "Voice of the Global South," advocating for inclusive and affordable technology.

China to Build Lunar Space Station, Explore Habitable Planets under New Plan

  • China announced plans to launch a manned lunar mission, construct a lunar space station and explore habitable planets and extra-terrestrial life to expand its space programme in the next few decades.
  • China's top space bodies unveiled a national mid- and long-term development programme for space science, which will guide the country's planning of space science missions and space research from 2024 to 2050.
  • The programme released by the China Academy of Sciences (CAS), China National Space Administration and the China Manned Space Agency outlined the goals of China's space science, including 17 priority areas under five key scientific themes, and a three-phase roadmap.
  • The international lunar research station initiated by China will be constructed during the second phase from 2028 to 2035.

Akhil Sheoran Secures Bronze at ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi

  • India's Akhil Sheoran clinched the bronze medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions event at the ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi. In a high-pressure moment, Sheoran displayed remarkable composure and precision, making a decisive shot in the final round to finish third with a score of 452.6.
  • The gold medal was secured by Hungary's Istvan Peni with 465.3, while Jiri Privratsky from the Czech Republic claimed silver with 464.2.

Hemang Badani Joins Delhi Capitals as New Head Coach

  • Delhi Capitals (DC) roped in former India batter Hemang Badani as its new head coach ahead of IPL 2025. While Badani replaced Ricky Ponting, ex-India cricketer Venugopal Rao succeeded Sourav Ganguly as the franchise's new director of cricket. DC also decided against renewing Praveen Amre's contract in a major revamp, who had served as the assistant coach and talent scout since 2014.
  • The DC's ownership took this call to overhaul the coaching staff and overall running structure of the franchise that is yet to win an IPL title.

World Cup Final: Sonam Maskar Shoots Down 10m Rifle Silver

  • Sonam Maskar hoisted the Indian flag by winning the women's air rifle silver behind Olympic champion Huang Yuting of China in the Shooting World Cup Final at the Dr. Karni Singh Range Tughlakabad in New Delhi.

Nayab Saini Takes Oath as Haryana Chief Minister

  • Nayab Singh Saini was sworn in as Haryana's Chief Minister for the second time, marking BJP's third consecutive term in power in the state. Governor Bandaru Dattatreya administered the oath at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, and NDA leaders. Saini's council of 13 ministers also took the oath. Saini, a Dalit leader from Kurukshetra, led the BJP to victory in the October 5 Assembly elections, securing 48 seats in the 90-member house. Saini's rise to the top post continues from his earlier roles in the BJP, including as Haryana BJP chief.

Kaksar Bridge Renamed in Honour of Kargil War Hero Capt. Amit Bhardwaj

  • In a poignant ceremony, Kaksar Bridge, in the Union Territory of Ladakh, was renamed Capt. Amit Bhardwaj Setu to honour the sacrifice of Capt. Amit Bhardwaj during the Kargil War. The event, attended by prominent military and civil officials, including CEC Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon and Major General K. Mahesh, SM, celebrated Bhardwaj's bravery and dedication to the nation.
  • Sunita Dhonkaria, Capt. Bhardwaj's sister, inaugurated a memorial at the bridge, further honoring her brother's legacy. Capt. Amit Bhardwaj, serving with the 4 JAT Battalion, made the ultimate sacrifice during a rescue operation in Kaksar, showcasing unparalleled courage against infiltrators in 1999.

Munitions India Limited Shines at Future Forces Exhibition in Czech Republic

  • International defence and security community met in Prague, capital city of the Czech Republic within the Future Forces Exhibhition 2024. This year's edition took place from October 16 to 18 at the PVA EXPO PRAGUE exhibition centre.
  • The programme was attended by the President of the Czech Republic, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces and foreign delegations from more than 60 countries, represented by Ministers of Defence, Deputy Ministers, Chiefs of the General Staff, Force Commanders, Ambassadors and Defence Attachés.
  • Munitions India Limited made a strong impression at the Future Forces Exhibition 2024. The Indian pavilion insugurated by Raveesh Kumar, India's ambassador to the Czech Republic showcased MIL's cutting-edge defence technology and solutions.

  • In a major move, Siddaramaiah declared that all government residential schools in Karnataka will be renamed as 'Maharshi Valmiki Residential Schools.' CBSE to Host National Summit on Bridging School to Work Transition

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to host its second National Summit on "Facilitating School to Work Transition" in Bhubaneswar on November 21, 2024. School heads from CBSE-affiliated institutions have been invited to join the event, which aims to bridge the gap between academic education and the practical demands of the professional world. The summit will run from 10 am to 5 pm.
  • In response to the growing demand for skilled professionals, CBSE seeks to ensure that students are well-prepared to step into the workforce.

SECL Becomes First Coal Company to Open Four AMRIT Pharmacies

  • South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a Chhattisgarh-based subsidiary of Coal India, opened its fourth AMRIT (Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment) Pharmacy, making it the first coal company to do so. This 216th AMRIT pharmacy, located at SECL's Health Centre in Indira Vihar Colony, Bilaspur, will provide generic and life-saving medicines at highly subsidised rates, benefiting SECL employees, the general public, and underserved tribal and rural communities. This initiative aligns with the government's Special Campaign 4.0 to promote inclusivity and improve access to healthcare.

Lady Justice Sheds Blindfold

  • The Supreme Court (SC) of India unveiled a redesigned version of the 'Lady Justice' statue, marking a significant departure from its colonial past. Traditionally depicted with a blindfold and a sword, the new statue now features 'Lady Justice' with open eyes and the Constitution of India in place of the sword, reflecting the judiciary's commitment to constitutional values and justice that "sees everyone equally".
  • The new statue of Nyay ki Devi (Lady Justice) was unveiled at Supreme Court, featuring significant changes to its traditional form.
  • The removal of the blindfold from 'Lady Justice' is more than a visual change, it symbolises a shift in how the judiciary views justice in modern India. The blindfold, long associated with impartiality and equality before the law, was replaced with open eyes, a bold statement led by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud.
