Nepal, India, and Bangladesh Sign Historic Electricity Trade Agreement

  • Nepal, India, and Bangladesh entered into a significant tripartite agreement aimed at facilitating cross-border electricity trade, marking a notable step in regional energy cooperation. This agreement allows Nepal to export its surplus electricity to Bangladesh via India during the rainy season, specifically from June 15 to November 15 each year. In the initial phase, Nepal is set to export 40 MW of hydroelectricity, leveraging India's infrastructure for transmission. The agreed rate per unit of electricity is fixed at 6.4 cents, with Nepal expected to generate approximately USD 9.2 million annually from this trade.
  • The agreement was signed in Kathmandu by NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising, NTPC Vidyut Byapar Nigam CEO Deino Naran, and Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman Mohamad Rizwan Karim, with the presence of Nepal's Energy Minister Dipak Khadka and Bangladeshi counterpart Sayeda Rijwana Hasan.
  • This agreement not only strengthens energy ties among the three nations but also paves the way for further regional cooperation in energy sustainability and infrastructure development, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing energy needs and promoting economic growth in South Asia.

Singapore Ends over 180 Years of Horse Racing to Provide Land for New Homes

  • Over 180 years of horse racing in Singapore ended. The Singapore Turf Club hosted its final race on October 5 and now the track would be handed back to the government to provide land for new homes.
  • As per reports, the race track of more than 300 acres would be bulldozed for new public and private homes as Singapore is trying to accommodate a growing population that crossed six million this year.
  • Though the government's decision to end horse racing sent shockwaves through the riding and training community in Singapore, horse racing has already been on the decline in the country.

India's Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Concludes

  • The Conference on Maritime Decarbonisation in India, co-hosted by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and the Asian Development Bank, concluded in New Delhi. The event brought together over two hundred delegates to discuss the future of green shipping and port operations. These include leaders from key Indian ports, central and state government officials, industry stakeholders, international experts, and academia.
  • Secretary, of the Ministry of Ports, Shopping and Waterways, T. K. Ramachandran pointed out that through initiatives like the Harit Sagar Green Port Guidelines and Harit Nauka Green Transition Guidelines, the Ministry is setting a global example in the adoption of green energy, sustainable port operations, and cleaner shipping practices.
  • The conference underscored India's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and highlighted strategic initiatives to decarbonise its maritime sector, aligned with the Maritime India Vision 2030. Discussions covered a range of critical themes, including green port infrastructure, clean harbour craft, the use of zero-carbon fuels, emissions reduction strategies, and the electrification of inland waterways.

NCRTC Launches Co-branded Namo Bharat NCMC for Seamless Connectivity, Integration

  • The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) launched co-branded Namo Bharat national common mobility cards (NCMC) for passengers, which will provide seamless connectivity and integration between RRTS and other modes of public transport.
  • The NCRTC collaborated with Airtel Payments Bank and introduced co-branded NCMC. These cards include debit, prepaid, and prepaid payment instruments for mass transit solutions (PPI- MTS) options.
  • Exclusively issued by Airtel Payments Bank, the Namo Bharat NCMC cards are equipped with tap-and-pay technology, allowing quick and secure transactions at transit terminals, retail outlets and other locations.

Mumbai Clinches 15th Irani Cup Title after 27-Year Wait

  • The Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai cricket team was felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in a grand ceremony after ending a 27-year wait for their Irani Cup victory. The iconic Wankhede Stadium hosted the event, marking a proud moment for Mumbai Cricket as they claimed their 15th Irani Cup title.
  • Mumbai defeated Rest of India (ROI) to win the Irani Cup 2024. The Irani Cup, also known as the IDFC First Bank Irani Trophy for sponsorship reasons, is an annual one-off First-Class cricket match organised by the BCCI and contested each season by the reigning Ranji Trophy champions and a multi-state RoI team composed of players from the other state teams.
  • The inaugural edition was played in March 1960 as a special event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy.
  • BCCI named the Irani Trophy after Zal R. Irani, their long-serving president and treasurer, who was a significant figure in the organization from its inception in 1928, till his death in 1970.

Francesco Bagnaia Holds Off Jorge Martin to Seal Japanese Grand Prix Double

  • Twice MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia won the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi to complete a weekend double and cut his gap to rival Jorge Martin at the top of the world championship down to 10 points.
  • The Ducati rider, who qualified in second after dominating practice and won the sprint, kept Martin at bay for 20 laps and clinched an eighth win of the season for the first time in his career.
  • Martin's second-place finish moved him up to 392 points while Bagnaia is second on 382, with four races left to go in the season.

  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, as of September 30, 2024, a total of 13,822 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been established across the country. Notably, in September 2024, these Kendras achieved record sales of Rs. 200 crore - the highest monthly sales in the history of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana.
  • These Kendras provide affordable medicines to citizens, promoting accessible healthcare.
  • Under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), in last 10 years, sale of medicines worth Rs. 6100 crore were done through Kendras, which has led to estimated savings of Rs. 30,000 crore for the citizens as compared to the branded medicines.

Chennai Enthralled by the IAF Air Show at Marina after a Gap of 21 Years

  • Over 15 lakh people from various parts of Chennai and neighbouring districts thronged the shores of Marina and its neighbourhoods and witnessed the spectacular air show of the Indian Air Force (IAF), conducted as a part of the 92nd Indian Airforce Day celebrations.
  • The city, which hosted the IAF airshow after 21 years, witnessed a scintillating aerial display of several fighter jets, helicopters, and vintage aircraft, which enthralled the audience. Some of the aircraft and helicopters that participated in various formations include LCA Tejas, Rafale, Sukhoi 30 MKI, Jaguar Mirage 2000, MiG 29, HTT 40, ALH Mk-I, Hawk MK, Chetak, Dakota and Harvard.
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Ministers, MPs and other senior officials from the Armed forces were among others who witnessed the airshow at Marina.
  • According to a Defence Press release, the show entered the 'Limca Book of Records' with over 15 lakh people watching the spectacular performance by IAF's 72 aircraft.

WHO Approves First mpox Diagnostic Test for Emergency Use

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) approved the first diagnostic test for mpox where the results can be immediately known, saying it could prove pivotal in helping to stop the rising global cases of the deadly virus.
  • The approval for emergency use was given to Abbott Molecular Inc. PCR test, Alinity m MPXV assay. The WHO said that the test would be pivotal in expanding diagnostic capacity in countries facing mpox outbreaks, where the need for quick and accurate testing has risen sharply.
  • According to WHO, limited testing capacity and delays in confirming mpox cases persist in Africa, contributing to the continued spread of the virus.
  • Outside Africa, one case each of mpox clade 1b was reported from Sweden and Thailand. India is the third country to report this fast-spreading mpox strain.

ADB Approves $162 Million Loan to Boost Sustainable Tourism Development

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $162 million loan aimed at enhancing tourism development projects in Himachal Pradesh.
  • As per Vivek Vishal, ADB's Senior Project Officer, the initiative will bolster the state's tourism potential by upgrading and preserving cultural and heritage sites, and build new facilities to strengthening the tourism sector.
  • The Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism Development Project in Himachal Pradesh is designed to promote heritage and cultural centres in the Mandi and Hamirpur districts. It will also involve restoring the historic Naggar Castle in Kullu, beautifying public spaces, and constructing a convention centre along with other amenities in Kangra. Additionally, there will be improvements in wayside facilities across Kullu, Hamirpur, and Kangra.
  • Furthermore, ADB will assist in strengthening the institutional capacity of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board to formulate a comprehensive tourism strategy and marketing plan.
