UN Chief Guterres Banned to Enter in the Israel

  • Foreign Minister of Israel Katz announced that they decided to declare the U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres an undesirable personality in Israel and banned his entry into Israel. Israel banned UN chief António Guterres from entry for failing to condemn Iran's missile attacks on Israel.
  • Iran launched a 180-ballistic missile attack on Israel on 1st October Night in a joint effort between the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and allied militant groups, including Hezbollah and the Houthis.
  • The attack was in response to Israel's killings of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, among several other leaders.

Britain Returns Chagos Islands to Mauritius, But Retains Diego Garcia Airbase

  • The UK agreed to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ending years of bitter dispute over Britain's last African colony.
  • The agreement allows a right of return for Chagossians, who the UK expelled from their homes in the 1960s and 1970s, in what has been described as a crime against humanity and one of the most shameful episodes of post-war colonialism.
  • However, there is an exception for the key island of Diego Garcia, which is home to a joint UK-US military base, and which will remain under UK control. Plans for the base were the reason the UK severed the Chagos Islands from the rest of Mauritius when it granted the latter independence in 1968 and forcibly displaced up to 2,000 people.

WETEX 2024 in Dubai

  • The 26th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2024 was held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, featuring a strong Indian presence with 29 leading companies participating in the Indian pavilion. The event, organised by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), concluded on October 3, showcasing cutting-edge innovations in renewable energy, water treatment, and environmental technologies.
  • Sunjay Sudhir, Ambassador of India to the UAE, highlighted the significance of Indian participation at WETEX 2024. He emphasised that the companies in the Indian pavilion are demonstrating advanced technologies and sustainable projects that support the green economy and contribute to realizing the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • WETEX 2024 features 16 international pavilions from 14 countries, underscoring its global significance in promoting sustainable technologies and fostering international partnerships.

Centre Reconstitutes Monetary Policy Committee ahead of RBI Rate Review

  • The central government reconstituted the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) ahead of the monetary policy review of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on October 7-9. The government appointed three external members in the MPC — Ram Singh, Director, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi; Saugata Bhattacharya, Economist and Nagesh Kumar, Director and Chief Executive, Institute for Studies in Industrial Development.
  • The three external members have been appointed for a period of four years. Other members of the MPC are from RBI which include the Deputy Governor of the RBI in charge of monetary policy and one officer of the RBI nominated by the Central Board. The RBI Governor is the Chairperson of the MPC.
  • The reconstitution of the committee could see a change in the differing stance within the MPC as earlier members have cited their dissenting views against the majority decision.

  • In a groundbreaking initiative to further strengthen the ecosystem for women entrepreneurs in Telangana, NITI Aayog, in collaboration with Telangana government, launched the first State chapter of Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP), with WE Hub serving as the nodal organisation.

India Sign MoU on Critical Minerals in 6th Commercial Dialogue with US

  • India and the US had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on critical minerals to ensure open supply chains and promote collaboration between India's Ministry of Mines and the US government, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal stated.
  • He also highlighted that the MoU focuses on creating resilient semiconductor supply chains.

Kerala Launches India's First Supercapacitor Manufacturing Facility

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated India's first supercapacitor manufacturing facility at Keltron Component Complex Limited (KCCL) in Kallyassery, Kannur.
  • The Chief Minister highlighted Keltron's role as a model public sector undertaking (PSU) in the electronics and IT industry, stating that Keltron has set a precedent for other public sector organisations across India since its inception in 1974.
  • The supercapacitor manufacturing plant was developed in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and the Chief Minister expressed gratitude for ISRO's role in this initiative. The facility, with an initial investment of Rs. 42 crore, is expected to boost Kerala's status as a hub for electronics industries, while also supporting the country's defence and electric vehicle sectors.

Praveen Jayawickrama Receives 1 Year Ban for ICC Anti-Corruption Breach

  • Sri Lanka spinner Praveen Jayawickrama was banned from all forms of cricket for one year for breaching the sport's anti-corruption code, as per International Cricket Council (ICC). According to ICC charges related to the Sri Lanka Premier League and International Cricket.
  • In August 2023, the ICC charged Jayawickrama for failing to report an approach to fix matches and obstructing an investigation.
  • The governing body said the 26-year-old was approached to fix international matches and was asked to approach another player to fix matches in the 2021 season of the Lanka Premier League.
  • The ICC said Jayawickrama had admitted to being in breach of the anti-corruption code.
  • As a result of the admission, Jayawickrama has accepted a sanction of a one-year period of ineligibility, of which the last six months are suspended.

  • The ICC (International Cricket Council) launched a new software as part of a social media moderation programme for the Women's T20 World Cup to help protect the cricket community from toxic content to safeguard the mental health of individuals and ensure a safer, kinder and healthier online community for the sport.
  • This programme is designed to identify and filter out toxic comments, including hate speech, harassment, and misogynistic content, ensuring a safer, more respectful environment for everyone involved in the tournament.
  • To carry out the social media moderation, the ICC has partnered with GoBubble, a leading provider of AI-powered technology and human resources for content moderation.
  • GoBubble's cutting-edge solution will monitor and moderate the ICC's official social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, as well as the social media accounts of participating players who have signed up for the service.
  • Harmful comments will be hidden from public view, allowing fans to engage with the World Cup without exposure to negativity.

Usman Qadir Announces Retirement from Pakistan Cricket

  • Usman Qadir, son of late cricket legend Abdul Qadir, announced his retirement from Pakistan cricket at 31. Making his decision public, Qadir expressed his heartfelt gratitude while taking immense pleasure in representing Pakistan as he steps aside from the game.
  • Qadir, a leg spinner, represented Pakistan in 26 matches, including 25 T20Is and 1 ODI.
  • Qadir made his international debut against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi in 2020, with his last match coming against Bangladesh at Hangzhou in China during the 2023 Asian Games. The right-arm leggie picked 32 wickets across both formats, with his best of 4/13 coming against Zimbabwe in his debut series. Marathi, Assamese, Bengali, Pali, Prakrit Get Classical Language Status

  • The Union Cabinet approved conferring the status of classical language to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali languages. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • This is a historical decision and this decision goes very well with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA government's philosophy of taking ride in our culture, taking pride in our heritage and taking pride in all the Indian languages and the rich heritage that we have," Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
  • The classical languages serve as a custodian of Bharat's profound and ancient cultural heritage, embodying the essence of each community's historical and cultural milestone.

  • Bachchan is now be a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour, Textiles and Skill Development chaired by former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai.

Taiwan Receives First Shipment of Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile Systems

  • The first shipment of 100 land-based Harpoon anti-ship missile systems ordered from the United States reportedly arrived in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, marking a significant milestone in the island's defense capabilities. The equipment was unloaded at Kaohsiung Port.
  • This is part of a 71.02 billion new Taiwan dollar ($2.22 billion) deal in 2020 for the US to supply the island with up to 100 shore-mounted Harpoon Coastal Defense Systems and related equipment.
  • Taiwan's defense ministry also allotted an additional 15 billion new Taiwan dollars ($469 million) to construct related facilities, bringing the total package to $86.02 billion new Taiwan dollars ($2.69 billion).
  • In 2023, it was reported that Taiwan and US officials had discussed focusing on expediting the arms shipment timeline, aiming to secure more than half of the Harpoon missiles within three years and the remainder by the end of 2029.

  • The Military Nursing Service (MNS) marked its 99th Raising Day on Oct 1, 2024 with solemnity and pride. Maj Gen Ignatius Delos Flora, Addl Director General of Military Nursing Services laid a wreath at the National War Memorial, in the presence of senior MNS officers and veterans.

World Animal Day

  • World Animal Day is an international day celebrated annually on October 4 to raise awareness about animal rights and welfare. This day serves as a reminder of our responsibility towards animals and how we can contribute to improving their lives.   • World Animal Day was originated by cynologist Heinrich Zimmermann. He organised the first World Animal Day on March 24, 1925, at the Sport Palace in Berlin, Germany. Over 5,000 people attended this first event. The activity was originally scheduled for October 4, to align with the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology. However, the venue was not available on that day. The event was then moved to October 4 for the first time in 1929.
  • The theme for World Animal Day 2024 is 'The world is their home too', highlighting the importance of treating the Earth as a shared space for humans and animals alike.

National Wildlife Week 2024 - Oct 02 to 08

  • National Wildlife Week 2024 is being celebrated in India from October 2 to 8, highlighting the theme 'Safeguarding Our Natural Heritage'. Established in 1957, the week aims to raise awareness about wildlife conservation, featuring educational events, community engagement, and activities in national parks to promote the protection of India's diverse ecosystems and endangered species.
  • The roots of Wildlife Week in India trace back to 1957 when the first Wildlife Week was commemorated. It was established by the Indian Board of Wildlife in 1952 to raise awareness about the long-term goals of wildlife protection throughout the country. Initially, Wildlife Day was observed in 1955, but it was later expanded and renamed Wildlife Week in 1957. Govt. Rolls Out Internship Scheme on Pilot Basis

  • The government rolled out the internship programme on a pilot basis that will provide a total annual financial assistance of Rs. 66,000 to those in the age group of 21-24 years, and aim to cover one crore youth over five years.
  • Under the pilot project, which is estimated to cost around Rs. 800 crore, the internship will start on December 2 and expects to cover 1.25 lakh candidates in the current financial year ending March 2025.
  • Announced in the Union Budget 2024, the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme in Top Companies will also provide insurance coverage to interns.
  • The scheme will be implemented through the online portal 'www.pminternship.mca.gov.in' developed by the corporate affairs ministry.

Cabinet Approves the PM Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY)

  • The Union Cabinet approved a proposal to rationalise all Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) operating under Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer's into two-umbrella schemes, with total investment of Rs. 1,01,321 crore, aimed to increase farmers' income and food security.
  • The two schemes are PM Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) that will promote sustainable agriculture and Krishonnati Yojana (KY), which will achieve food security for self-sufficiency.
  • All components shall leverage technology to ensure efficient and effective implementation of the various components. These Schemes are implemented through the State Governments.
  • Under PM-RKVY, states have been given flexibility to reallocate funds from one component to another based on their specific requirement.
  • The rationalisation of the schemes was done for the following reasons:
  • To avoid duplication, ensure convergence and give flexibility to states.
  • Focus on upcoming challenges of agriculture - nutrition security, sustainability, climate resilience, value chain development and private sector participation.
  • State governments will be able to draw a comprehensive strategic plan suiting their requirements for agriculture sector.
  • Annual Action Plan (AAP) of States can be approved in one go rather approving individual scheme-wise AAPs.
  • The two umbrealla schemes will be tailored to the needs of different states, and will be implemented in coordination and cost sharing with states.

IIT Madras Launches 'Cyber Commandos' Training for Law Enforcement Officers

  • IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation launched a new training program to create 'Cyber Commandos' among law enforcement officers across India. An initiative of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the 'Cyber Commandos' programme is a critical step in bolstering India's cyber defence capabilities.
  • This specialised force will be at the forefront of defending the nation against cyberattacks, safeguarding sensitive data and maintaining digital sovereignty.
  • The Cyber Commandos will represent a significant upgrade from existing cybercrime cells. While these cells primarily focus on reactive measures like investigation and prosecution of cybercrimes, the commandos will be a proactive force.
  • The training programme was launched at IIT Madras today by Professor V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, in the presence of Dr. Sandeep Mittal, IPS, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Cyber Crime Wing, Tamil Nadu, Col Arvind Kumar, Director, Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), Mr. Mayank Ghildiyal, Deputy Director, I4C, Dr. M. J. Shankar Raman, CEO, IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation and other dignitaries.

Odisha Government Announces Change in School Uniforms for Classes 9, 10

  • The newly formed BJP government announced a new colour scheme for the uniforms of students in classes 9 and 10 at government and aided schools. According to the official directive, the updated uniforms will incorporate a combination of light brown, chocolate, and clay-baked yellow.
  • The current school uniforms consist of a green and white colour scheme, aligning with the colour code of the BJD's party symbol.
  • Under the "Chief Minister's Students' Wear Scheme," new uniforms have been chosen for government and government-aided secondary school students. Instructions have been issued, and the new uniforms will be distributed to schools where the previous uniforms have not been stitched or provided.
