  • Claudia Sheinbaum was sworn in as Mexico's first woman President, vowing to bolster women's rights and ensure Latin America's No. 2 economy remains a secure destination for international investment.
  • Sheinbaum, a scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, took the oath of office and received the presidential sash in a boisterous ceremony in Mexico's Congress, which marked the start of her six-year term.

Bangladesh Recalls Envoy from India in Major Diplomatic Reshuffle

  • Bangladesh's interim government recalled five envoys, including the High Commissioner to India Mustafizur Rahman, in a major diplomatic reshuffle, a foreign ministry official said.
  • The foreign ministry ordered envoys in Brussels, Canberra, Lisbon, New Delhi and the permanent mission to the United Nations in New York to immediately return to the capital, Dhaka.
  • The move came ahead of the national elections in Bangladesh. While the reason behind the recall is unclear, analysts suggest it may be part of the interim government's efforts to re-align diplomatic priorities during the transition period.

Italy Hosts G7 Call to Address Middle East Crisis

  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni convened a call of G7 leaders to discuss the escalating crisis in the Middle East. Italy, holding the rotating presidency of the G7, emphasised its commitment to finding a diplomatic solution amidst growing tensions, particularly focusing on the Israeli-Lebanese border and Iran's missile attack on Israel.
  • Meloni's government has expressed "deep concern" over recent developments, including the instability in Lebanon. Italy's role as chair of the G7 positions it to lead efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region, particularly through diplomacy.
  • This summit was notable for being the last for leaders like British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and U.S. President Joe Biden. It also marked the first-ever attendance of Pope Francis at a G7 summit. Discussions addressed the WTO reforms, regional Middle East tensions, support for Ukraine's sovereignty, and concerns about Iran's nuclear program.

Rare Honey Badger Spotted for First Time in Uttarakhand

  • A honey badger, also known as Ratel, was captured on camera for the first time in the Terai East Forest Division of Uttarakhand. This rare species is listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, which offers it the highest level of protection.
  • Researchers note that there is limited information about the current population of honey badgers in Uttarakhand.
  • Previously, honey badgers were spotted in locations such as the Chilika Lagoon and Simlipal Tiger Reserve in Odisha, Bannerghatta National Park and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, the Eastern Ghats and West Bengal.
  • A study highlights the challenges of conservation efforts for honey badgers, as their population status in India is poorly documented, and their behaviour and social structure remain largely unexplored. These animals are known for their solitary nature.

BharatGen: India's First Government-Funded Multimodal AI Initiative

  • BharatGen was inaugurated in New Delhi, marking a significant step in India's commitment to generative AI. The initiative aims to enhance public service delivery and citizen engagement by developing foundational models in language, speech, and computer vision. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for various portfolios, emphasised BharatGen's role in positioning India as a global leader in generative AI, similar to the transformative impact of UPI.
  • BharatGen, led by IIT Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), focuses on creating generative AI systems that produce high-quality text and multimodal content in various Indian languages. The project is implemented by the TIH Foundation for IoT and IOE at IIT Bombay, with contributions from several premier institutions, including IIIT Hyderabad and IIM Indore.
  • The initiative is distinguished by four key features:
  • Multilingual and Multimodal Models: BharatGen will create foundational models that cater to diverse Indian languages and formats.
  • Bhartiya Dataset: The project will prioritize the development and training of AI systems using India-centric datasets.
  • Open-Source Platform: BharatGen will promote an open-source ecosystem for generative AI research in India.
  • Focus on Data Sovereignty: The initiative emphasises collecting and curating data that accurately represents India's linguistic and cultural diversity.

  • When Vaibhav Suryawanshi launched Thomas Brown over mid-wicket for a gigantic six with audacity and non-challenge in India Under-19's Youth Test against Australia, he offered first glimpses of what he is capable of. At 13 years and 188 days, Suryawanshi from Samastipur in Bihar, became the youngest ever to score an international century at any level.
  • Vaibhav made 104 off 62 in his unique authoritative style that defied his age. His century that came off 58 deliveries is the fastest ever by an Indian and second overall in U 19s behind Moeen Ali's 56 that came in 2005.

China Open: Battling Carlos Alcaraz Outlasts Jannik Sinner and Wins Title

  • Carlos Alcaraz roared back from a set down to beat world number one Jannik Sinner in a thriller and won his first China Open title.
  • The four-time Grand Slam champion from Spain edged Sinner in a captivating final 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) for his fourth ATP crown of the year and 16th overall.

India to Host Historic First-Ever Kho Kho World Cup in 2025

  • Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) in collaboration with the International Kho Kho Federation revealed plans to organise the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup in India in 2025. This historic event marks a significant milestone in the journey of this traditional Indian sport toward global recognition.
  • The groundbreaking championship will feature: 24 countries from six continents, 16 men's teams and 16 women's teams and will be a week-long series of high-intensity matches.
  • This diverse participation underscores the growing international appeal of Kho Kho, which has evolved from its humble beginnings on mud grounds to now being played on professional mats across 54 countries worldwide.

2024 AYUSH Medical Value Travel Summit

  • Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush, and Union Minister of State, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, inaugurated the Ayush Medical Value Travel Summit 2024. The event took place in Mumbai.
  • Aim: To strengthen India's position in Medical Value Travel (MVT) by integrating traditional Indian systems of medicine Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (Ayush) with modern healthcare systems.
  • The theme of the summit is 'Global Synergy in Ayush: Transforming Health and Wellness through Medical Value Travel'.
  • The summit is organised by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, the Government of Maharashtra, and key partners.

Prashant Kishor Announces Political Debut, Launches Jan Suraaj Party

  • Political strategist-turned-activist Prashant Kishor launched his political outfit Jan Suraaj Party, a much-anticipated move by which he hopes to take the political landscape in Bihar by storm.
  • Kishor also named Manoj Bharti, a Madhubani-born former Indian Foreign Service officer, as working president of the party, saying that the latter will hold the post till March when organisational polls will be held.
  • The party was launched at Veterinary College Ground in the state capital in presence of many renowned figures, including former Union Minister Devendra Prasad Yadav, diplomat-turned-politician Pavan Varma and ex-MP Monazir Hassan.

Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin Becomes First Woman to Take over as DG, Armed Forces Medical Services

  • Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin became the first woman officer to take over as the Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). The DGAFMS is directly responsible to the Ministry of Defence for overall medical policy matters which relate to the Armed Forces.
  • Prior to assuming the appointment of 46th DGAFMS, the Flag Officer held the coveted appointments of DG Medical Services (Navy), DG Medical Services (Air) and Director & Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. She is an alumna of AFMC, Pune and was commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in December 1985. She is an MD in Radiodiagnosis from AFMC, Pune and Diplomate National Board in Radiation Oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, complemented with training in Gamma Knife Surgery from University of Pittsburgh.
  • In a career spanning 38 years, the Flag Officer has held prestigious academic and administrative appointments including Professor & Head, Radiation Oncology, Army Hospital (R&R) and Command Hospital (Southern Command)/AFMC Pune, Commanding Officer, INHS Asvini, Command Medical Officer in the Indian Navy's Southern and Western Naval Commands.

Mithun Chakraborty to Receive Dadasaheb Phalke award

  • Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, known for his versatile contributions to Indian cinema, will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024. Mithun Chakraborty expressed his overwhelming joy, dedicating the honour to his family and fans. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated him on his achievement, highlighting his enduring legacy in Indian cinema.
  • Mithun Chakraborty made his debut with the 1976 film Mrigayaa, winning the National Award for Best Actor. He gained immense popularity with the 1982 film Disco Dancer and starred in several other hits such as Surakshaa, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Dance Dance, and Agneepath. He has won three National Film Awards and continues to be a household name, balancing both Bollywood and Bengali cinema.

Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan Scheme Launched by PM

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA), on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand  The scheme has a total outlay of Rs. 79,156 crores with the contribution from Central government is Rs. 56,333 crore and State government is Rs. 22,823 crore.
  • Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan envisions saturation of critical gaps in social infrastructure, health, education, livelihood, through 25 interventions implemented by 17-line ministries of Govt of India by convergence and outreach; and ensures holistic and sustainable development of tribal areas and communities.

ICAI Hosts Conclave to Enhance Local Self-government accounting Practices

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), through its Committee on Public and Government Financial Management (CPGFM), organised a one-and-a-half-day Local Governance Synergy Conclave at Hotel Le Meridien in New Delhi.
  • The Conclave was inaugurated by Girish Chandra Murmu, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, alongside key dignitaries, including Vivek Bhardwaj, IAS, Secretary of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, and CA Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal, President of ICAI.

Uttar Pradesh to Get 2 New Private Universities in Mathura, Meerut

  • The Uttar Pradesh cabinet gave the green light to the 'Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Promotion Policy, 2024,' aimed at improving the quality of education for the state's youth. The policy includes provisions such as stamp duty exemptions, capital subsidies, and special incentives for sponsoring bodies, with additional benefits for universities ranked in the top 50.
  • Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay highlighted that this initiative will boost private investment to meet the increasing demand for higher education within the state, providing students access to high-quality education locally. The policy is also expected to create both direct and indirect employment for young people in Uttar Pradesh.
  • As part of the meeting, the cabinet approved the establishment of two new private universities in Mathura and Meerut. The 'Rajiv Memorial Academic Welfare Society' has been granted permission to establish KD University in Mathura, while 'Vidya Bal Mandali' received approval to set up Vidya University in Meerut on a 42.755-acre campus.

Social Justice Minister Launches Programme for Educators to teach Children with Disabilities

  • Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar launched a programme aimed at creating a skilled workforce of educators equipped to teach children with disabilities.
  • The Integrated Special and Inclusive Teacher Education Programme (ISITEP) is a four-year integrated Bachelor of Education degree programme designed to prepare special education teachers for foundational (up to Class 2), preparatory (Class 3-5), middle (Class 6-8), and secondary levels (class 9-12).
  • The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises the need for multidisciplinary, high-quality teacher education programmes.

Launch of 'Cruise Bharat Mission' to Boost Cruise Tourism in India

  • Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched the 'Cruise Bharat Mission' from Mumbai port. The mission aims to enhance India's potential as a global hub for cruise tourism, targeting a doubling of cruise passenger traffic by 2029. It focuses on three key cruise segments: ocean and harbour, river, inland, and island. This initiative is expected to significantly revamp the cruise sector in India and promote the country as a leading global cruise destination.
  • The Cruise Bharat Mission is being executed in three phases:
  • Phase 1 (October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2025): This phase focuses on conducting studies, master planning, and forming cruise alliances with neighbouring countries. It will also involve modernising existing cruise terminals, marinas, and destinations to enhance cruise circuits.
  • Phase 2 (October 1, 2025 – March 31, 2027): This phase will concentrate on developing new cruise terminals, marinas, and destinations to activate high-potential cruise locations and circuits.
  • Phase 3 (April 1, 2027 – March 31, 2029): This final phase will focus on integrating all cruise circuits across the Indian Subcontinent, ensuring the maturity of the cruise ecosystem while continuing infrastructure development.
