Iran Appoints Fatemeh Mohajerani as First Female Government Spokesperson
In Iran, for the first time, a woman is the government spokesperson. At the suggestion of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and with the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers, Fatemeh Mohajerani was appointed as the first female government spokesperson.
Fatemeh Mohajerani is the former head of Technical and Vocational Training University of Shariati (for women) in Iran's 11th government. Prior to this, Mohajerani, a noted academician and administrator, had served as the chief of Centre for Brilliant Talents by then-Education Minister Seyyed Mohammad Bat'hai in 2017 and has also held other positions in the country's Education Ministry.
The 2nd Meeting of Joint Russian-Indian Commission
The Second Meeting of the Joint Russian-Indian Commission on the Cooperation in the Field of Emergency Management was held in Moscow, Russia. Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, India led the Indian delegation.
Vinay Kumar, Ambassador of India to Russia was also present with the Indian delegation comprising of Rajendra Singh, Member & HOD NDMA, Sanjeev Kumar Jindal, Additional Secretary, MHA, Director NRSC and other senior officials of MHA.
The working plan of the Joint Russian- Indian Commission on the Cooperation in the Field of Emergency Management for 2025-2026 was signed by Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, India and Mr. Kurenkov Aleksandr Vyacheslavovich, Minister of the Russian Federation for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (EMERCOM of Russia).
Both the countries agreed to implement this Plan during 2025-2026 and also decided to continue exchange of the best practices and lesson learnt in the field of Disaster Management.
Typhoon Shanshan Lashes Japan with Torrential Rain, Strong Winds
A typhoon lashed southern Japan with torrential rain and strong winds, causing deaths and raised concerns of flooding, landslides and extensive damage.
Typhoon Shanshan made landfall on the southern island of Kyushu and about 60 cm of rainfall had fallen in parts of Miyazaki prefecture, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. That 24-hour total was more than the August rainfall average and swollen rivers were threatening floods.
Government Approves 4 Start-Ups in the Field of Technical Textiles
Secretary, Ministry of Textiles chaired the 8th Empowered Programme Committee (EPC) meeting under the National Technical Textiles Mission, at Udyog Bhawan, New Delhi. The committee approved 4 Start-Ups with a grant of approx. INR 50 Lakh, each, under the 'Grant for Research & Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles (GREAT)' scheme.
The committee also approved a grant of approx. INR 20 Cr. to 5 Education Institutes to introduce courses in Technical Textiles under the 'General Guidelines for Enabling of Academic Institutes in Technical Textiles'.
The approved Start-Up projects are focused on key strategic areas of Composites, Sustainable Textiles, and Smart Textiles. The approved Education Institutes proposed to introduce new B.Tech courses in different fields and applications of technical textiles including Geotextiles, Geosynthetics, Composites, Civil Structures, etc.

Shriram Capital, the holding company of the Shriram Group, appointed Subhasri. S as its new Managing Director and CEO, effective 1 September. Subhasri, who previously served as Joint Managing Director, has been a key figure in the company since joining as an Officer in the NBFC business in 1991.

Former India bowler Zaheer Khan succeeded Gautam Gambhir as the new mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), as announced by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. Zaheer, who represented Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during his playing stint, will take the role from IPL 2025.
Gambhir served as the mentor of the side for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, having worked with them since the launch of the franchise. During his successful stint, Gambhir led LSG to back-to-back playoffs and was renowned for his aggressive nature in the middle.

West Indies pacer Shannon Gabriel announced his international retirement. Having debuted in 2012, Gabriel was an integral part of West Indies' Test line-up and played his last game versus India during the two-match home series in 2023. Gabriel retired from the international level having represented West Indies in 59 Tests, 25 ODIs and 2 T20Is. He accounted for 166, 33 and 3 scalps in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively. The speedster was known to hit the deck hard and extract seam movement off the surface.
England Batter Dawid Malan Announces International Retirement
England batter Dawid Malan announced his retirement from international cricket as he dropped the curtains on his illustrious career. Having represented England in all three formats, he retired with a unique distinction of having scored a hundred in both white-ball and red-ball cricket. His last international appearance was at the ODI World Cup in India in 2023 and was since overlooked for the international set-up.
Malan made his debut in June 2017 when he was 30. He got rewarded for his excellent form during the South Africa series as he made his Test debut. He was part of the England squad during the Ashes in 2017 in Australia and was the fourth-best batter during the tour. Despite his excellent run in the T20I and Test format, it was not until 2019 that he was handed an ODI cap.
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren to Join BJP
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren asserted that his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party was taken in the interest of Jharkhand and he will resign from the JMM and as minister.
The senior tribal leader made it clear that he was not afraid of any situation.
Champai Soren had assumed office as the 12th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on February 2, 2024 shortly after his predecessor Hemant Soren resigned just before being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.
PM chairs 44th PRAGATI Interaction
Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier on August 28, chaired the meeting of the 44th edition of PRAGATI, the ICT-based multi-modal platform for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation, involving Centre and State governments. This was the first meeting in the third term.
In the meeting, seven significant projects were reviewed, which included two projects relating to road connectivity, two rail projects and one project each of the Coal, Power and Water Resources sectors. The cost of these projects totalled more than Rs. 76,500 crore. The projects relate to the following states and UTs Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Goa, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Delhi.
ICAR-CIFE and VAMNICOM Sign MoU to Enhance Cooperative Management in Fisheries
In a significant stride towards fostering collaboration in the field of cooperative management within the fisheries sector, the Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE) and the Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management (VAMNICOM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).This is an important step forward in realisation of the vision of establishment of 2 lakh PACS, Dairy and Fishery Cooperatives in every Panchayat.
The ceremony, held at the ICAR-CIFE campus in Mumbai, was graced by Dr. Ravishankar CN, Director and Vice Chancellor of ICAR-CIFE, and Dr. Hema Yadav, Director of VAMNICOM. Scientists, faculty members, and key team members from both institutions were also present on the occasion.
The MoU aims to bolster the synergies between ICAR-CIFE and VAMNICOM, paving the way for enhanced cooperative management practices in fisheries. Through this partnership, the institutions will collaborate on research, training and development initiatives that are expected to significantly impact the fisheries sector by improving cooperative management strategies and practices.
Bhatti Appointed New CISF DG; Chaudhary Named BSF Chief
Senior IPS officers Rajwinder Singh Bhatti and Daljit Singh Chaudhary were appointed as the chiefs of the Central Industrial Security Force and the Border Security Force.
Bhatti is a 1990 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Bihar cadre. He has been appointed as the DG of the CISF from the date of assumption of charge of the post, for a tenure up to the date of his superannuation on September 30, 2025.
Chaudhary, who is currently the chief of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), was appointed as the Director General of the BSF for a tenure up to the date of his superannuation on November 30, 2025. Chaudhary is a 1990 batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.
Vice Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar Takes Over as DG of Project 'Seabird'
Vice Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar assumed duties of the Director General of Project 'Seabird', with a charter to oversee the largest defence infrastructure project currently progressing at the Karwar Naval Base. He took charge from Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti. The change of guard took place at the headquarters of the project in New Delhi.
The Navy is expanding the crucial and strategically located naval base in Karnataka's Karwar as part of Project 'Seabird'.
Dhankhar was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1990 and is a specialist in navigation and direction.

National Sports Day

The Indian government officially announced to celebrate National Sports Day in 2012 marking August 29 as a day to recognise sports excellence. The date was selected to pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, also known as the 'Wizard of Hockey'. Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. His career spanned from 1926 to 1948, when he played 185 matches for India scoring over 400 goals. His excellent performance brought the golden period for Indian hockey as he led India to win three gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

Himachal Pradesh Passes Bill to Raise Women's Age of Marriage to 21 Years
The Himachal Pradesh legislative assembly passed a Bill to raise the minimum age for marriage for women from 18 to 21 years.
The Bill, Prohibition of Child Marriage (Himachal Pradesh Amendment) Act, 2024, seeks to amend the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 was enacted to provide for the prohibition of solemnisation of child marriages.
As per the same, the minimum age of marriage for women is 18 while it is 21 for men.
The Himachal bill has sought to raise the minimum age of marriage for women to 21 with a view to ensure gender equality and taking into account the fact that early marriage acts as a hindrance to women's progress in professional career and physical development.
Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy
The Uttar Pradesh government introduced the Digital Media Policy, 2024, which incentivises social media influencers to promote state initiatives, schemes, and achievements through various online platforms. This policy aims to enhance the visibility of government projects and create employment opportunities within the state.
The new policy, approved by the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, provides for a structured payment scheme for influencers based on their social media presence. Influencers can receive up to Rs. 8 lakh per month depending on their platform and category:
X, Facebook, Instagram: Payments of Rs. 5 lakh, Rs. 4 lakh, Rs. 3 lakh, and Rs. 2 lakh.
YouTube Videos, Shorts, and Podcasts: Payments of up to Rs. 8 lakh, Rs.7 lakh, Rs. 6 lakh, and Rs. 4 lakh.
Agencies and firms will be enlisted to manage and distribute advertisements, ensuring that content promoting government schemes and achievements is effectively created and shared. This initiative is expected to foster employment and engage the digital community in promoting state projects.
IIT Madras Partners with IIT Ropar to Expand Opportunities for Data Science Students
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) entered into a strategic partnership that will enable IIT Madras BS Degree (Data Science and Applications) students to take campus courses at IIT Ropar with a pathway to MS admission.
This partnership will also facilitate the completion of IIT Madras BS Degree credits by taking courses at IIT Ropar.
An MoU towards this collaboration was signed today, Aug 28, 2024 by Professor V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, and Professor Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar.
CBSE Mandates 'Composite Skill Labs' in Schools to Enhance Skill-based Education
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued a directive mandating the establishment of 'Composite Skill Labs' in all affiliated schools to boost skill education as per the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). Schools are instructed to set up either a single Composite Skill Lab of 600 sq ft for classes 6-12 or two separate labs of 400 sq ft each—one for classes 6-10 and the other for classes 11-12.
The notification specifies that a fully equipped Composite Skill Lab is mandatory for all schools seeking new affiliations with CBSE. Schools already affiliated must set up these labs within three years.
UP Government Announces Scholarships for All Students in Sanskrit Schools
The Uttar Pradesh government announced that it will now provide scholarships to all students enrolled in over 500 Sanskrit schools across the state, eliminating the previous requirement that their family income must be below Rs. 50,000 annually. During a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, it was decided to increase the scholarship amount for students in classes 9 to 12 in these schools.
The revised scholarship amount now ranges between Rs. 50 and Rs. 200 per month. According to an official statement, this is the first update in over two decades, with the last revision occurring in 2001.
