India Launches its 1st Reusable Hybrid Rocket 'RHUMI-1'

  • India launched its first reusable hybrid rocket 'RHUMI- 1', developed by the Tamil Nadu-based start-up Space Zone India with Martin Group, from Thiruvidandhai in Chennai.
  • The rocket, carrying 3 Cube Satellites and 50 PICO Satellites, was launched into a suborbital trajectory using a mobile launcher.
  • These satellites will be collecting data for research purposes on Global warming and Climate change. RHUMI Rocket is equipped with a generic-fuel-based hybrid motor and electrically triggered parachute deployer, RHUMI is 100% pyrotechnic-free and 0% TNT.

Astronomers Introduce Black Hole Finder for Citizens to Find Newly-Formed Cosmic Gas Giants

  • Astronomers took a very interesting initiative and introduced an application, known as Black Hole Finder, which can help citizens spot newly-formed black holes.
  • The app was launched by the Dutch Black Hole Consortium in eight languages and is now available for citizens to use worldwide. Earlier, it was only available in Dutch and English, but now, the makers have added Spanish, German, Chinese, Bengali, Polish, and Italian which has widened the reach of this app.
  • Space enthusiasts across the world have been appealed to help scientists identify the sources which are interesting and should be followed up, which is known as potential kilonovas.

Shikhar Dhawan Announces Retirement from International and Domestic Cricket

  • Opener Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from the international and domestic cricket.
  • Dhawan, who has played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is for India reflected on his career, which lasted 20 years, since making his first-class debut in 2004. Dhawan's best came in the 50-over format in which he amassed 6793 runs at an average of 44.11. He averaged 40.61 for his 2315 Test runs
  • Dhawan's stint in the IPL also helped him build a big fan following. He played for Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings.

Chess Great Kramnik Takes Polygraph Test

  • Former world champion Vladimir Kramnik became the first player to undergo a polygraph test, a measure introduced by the World Chess Organisation to combat cheating by players in online matches as well as over the board tournaments.
  • The World Chess Organisation runs the chessarena.com for FIDE, the official chess body that organises tournaments across the world.
  • The World Chess introduced voluntary polygraph testing as a significant new tool in its anti-cheating arsenal. It said the chess world has been fraught with cheating allegations, including $100 million lawsuits, and one of the most vocal critics of cheating has been Vladimir Kramnik himself. Known for his advocacy for fair play, Kramnik had participated in and won the "Clash of Blames" against Jose Martinez Alcantara, a match that highlighted the importance of addressing cheating in both online and over-the-board chess.

PM Modi Presents BHISHM Cubes to Ukraine

  • In a historic visit to Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged extensive humanitarian support and handed over four BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri) Cubes to the Ukrainian government. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since its independence in 1991, emphasising India's stance for peace amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
  • The BHISHM Cubes, part of India's Project Aarogya Maitri, are innovative, compact units designed for rapid deployment in conflict zones and disaster-affected areas. Each cube, weighing up to 20 kg, is packed with essential medicines, medical equipment, and supplies. The cubes are organised to address various medical emergencies and are easily transportable via air, sea, land, or drones.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Launches 'Create In India Challenge-Season One'

  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched 'Create in India Challenge-Season One' in New Delhi in the run-up to the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit. Speaking on the occasion, Vaishnaw said that reflecting the evolution of Indian economy and the impact of technological advancements, 25 challenges have been launched. He said, the Media and Entertainment industry has also evolved, significantly boosting the creator economy. The Minister said, this creator economy was recognised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who presented the first National Creator Awards.

India's KAPS-4 Nuclear Plant Achieves Full Capacity

  • The Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat, India, reached full operational capacity with its second 700 MW nuclear reactor, KAPS-4, which started operating at full power. This achievement follows the reactor's commercial operation start on March 31, 2024, and its first criticality on December 17, 2023. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) confirmed that Unit 4 at KAPS was previously operating at 90% capacity before reaching its full 700 MW output.
  • The KAPS-4 unit, an indigenous 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR), reflects the success of India's domestic nuclear technology. The full power operation of KAPS-4, alongside its twin unit KAPS-3, underscores the effectiveness of the PHWR design.

US Approves Sale of Anti-submarine Warfare Gear to India

The DSCA delivered the required certification, notifying Congress of the possible sale.
  • US secretary of state Antony Blinken approved a possible foreign military sale to India of anti-submarine warfare sonobuoys and related equipment for an estimated cost of $52.8 million, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced in Washington.
  • The development came on a day Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his American counterpart Lloyd Austin held wide-ranging talks at the Pentagon to deepen the bilateral relationship, with the dialogue putting the spotlight on a raft of issues including defence cooperation, industrial collaboration, regional security, the Indo-Pacific region, and other pressing international matters.
  • The equipment will improve India's capability to meet threats by enhancing its capacity to conduct anti-submarine warfare operations from its US-origin MH-60R helicopters.

Assam Government Introduces Bill to Repeal Muslim Marriage, Divorce Law in State

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Assam tabled a new Bill in the State Assembly to repeal the existing law governing Muslim marriages and divorces in the State.
  • The Bill aims to abolish the Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935 on the primary ground that it facilitates the practice of child marriage.
  • The Bill outlines several other reasons for repealing the Act.
  • The statement of objects and reasons notes that the 1935 Act is a pre-independence Act adopted for the erstwhile Province of Assam to address Muslim religious and social arrangements.
  • It also states that the registration of marriages and divorces is not mandatory, and the informal registration process leaves room for non-compliance with existing norms.

Postal Department Launches Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana to Encourage Philately

  • The Department of Post under the Union Ministry of Communication launched the Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana to promote research and scholarship in philately among students across India. Announced by the Postmaster General of North Gujarat Region, Ahmedabad, Krishna Kumar Yadav, during the closing ceremony of the 'The Ideal and Great Stamps' Paintings exhibition, the scheme aims to foster the hobby of stamp collection among children.

South Indian Adivasi Knowledge Centre Launched in B.R. Hills

  • South India's first adivasi library, 'Kaanu', was inaugurated at B.R. Hills in Chamarajanagar district in the state of Karnataka. 'Kaanu' means evergreen forest in Soliga language. It is the first South Indian Adivasi Knowledge Centre.
  • There is no institution dedicated for research on various aspects related to adivasis in South India.
  • Scholars from tribal communities held talks with Prashanth N. Srinivas, a medical doctor and public health researcher at BR Hills, and Wraner from Germany last year (2023) and decided to set up this exclusive library to showcase works and promote research on Jenu Kuruba, Kadu Kuruba, Betta Kuruba, Soliga and other forest-based tribes.

CBSE Collaborates with ISTM for Trainers Certification Course for Board's Resource Persons

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education joined hands with the Institute of Secretariat Training and Management (ISTM) under the Dept. of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the government of India to impart a two-day certificate course on the training of trainers.
  • The development aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) which stipulates 50 hours of continuous professional development for all teachers and head teachers. Under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, CBSE is targeting to train nearly 15000 Resource Persons (RPs) in several batches.
  • The course is designed with the core components of the Direct Trainers Skills (DTS) and Design of Training (DoT) and the Integrated Approaches to Child and Adolescent Development.
