Australia Green Lights World's 'Largest' Solar Hub

  • Australia approved plans for a massive solar and battery farm that would export energy to Singapore, a project billed as the largest solar precinct in the world.
  • Authorities announced environmental approvals for SunCable's US$24 billion project in Australia's remote north that is slated to power three million homes.
  • The project, which will include an array of panels, batteries and, eventually, a cable linking Australia with Singapore, is backed by tech billionaire and green activist Mike Cannon-Brookes.
  • Numerous approval processes and other hurdles remain despite green light.
  • The project depends on sign-offs from Singapore's energy market authority, Indonesia's government and Australian Indigenous communities.

Portugal: Tourists Stranded as Wildfires in Madeira Endanger World-Heritage Forests

  • The southern part of the Portuguese island of Madeira has been witnessing forest fires that have devastated more than 5,000 hectares of wilderness. The wildfires have posed an existential threat to the largest surviving laurel (Laurus nobilis) forests in the world which are also deemed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
  • Madeira is among the most popular tourist spots in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and dozens of tourists are reported to be stranded on the island battling the fury of forest fires.

  • Flipkart's Supply Chain Operations Academy (SCOA) exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) at the Samarth event with the mission to upskill thousands of employable youth across India. The collaboration between MSDE and Flipkart's Supply Chain Operations Academy (SCOA), formalised at the celebration of Flipkart Samarth's journey, is a significant step towards equipping our youth with the skills to thrive in the modern marketplace.
  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0, this partnership aims to upskill thousands of youth across India, enhancing their employability in the e-commerce and supply chain sectors.

Anil Ambani, 24 Others Banned From Securities Market by SEBI for 5 Years

  • Markets regulator SEBI barred industrialist Anil Ambani, 24 other entities, including former key officials of Reliance Home Finance from the securities market for five years for diversion of funds from the company.
  • SEBI imposed a penalty of Rs. 25 crore on Anil Ambani and restrained him from being associated with the securities market including as a director or Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) in any listed company, or any intermediary registered with the market regulator, for a period of 5 years.

Mumbai Ranks 2nd in Global Housing Price Rise

  • Mumbai and Delhi ranked second and third positions, respectively, among 44 cities globally in annual price rise of prime residential properties during the June quarter, Knight Frank said in a report.
  • The annual price growth across the 44 cities globally slowed to 2.6 per cent in the second quarter of the 2024 calendar year, from 4.1 per cent in the preceding quarter, real estate consultant Knight Frank report said.
  • Manila ranked first with a 26 per cent annual rise during the quarter. Mumbai, with an annual price rise of 13 per cent in prime residences, ranked second, up from its 6th rank in the year-ago period. New Delhi, which recorded a rise of 10.6 per cent year-on-year in prime residential property prices, made a stupendous jump in rankings from 26th a year earlier to third during the quarter under review.
  • Among other global cities, Los Angeles was at the 4th position with an 8.9 per cent growth in prices, followed by Miami (7.1 per cent), Nairobi (6.6 per cent), Madrid (6.4 per cent), Lisbon (4.7 per cent), Seoul (4.6 per cent), and San Francisco (4.5 per cent). Dubai, after a 124 per cent increase since 2020, saw slight moderation, declining by 0.3 per cent annually.

ISRO: Chandrayaan-4 Design Final, Samples from Moon by 2027

  • The designs of India's next mission to the Moon, Chandrayaan-4, which will bring rock and soil samples back to the Earth, was finalised, and will most likely happen in 2027, said ISRO chairman S. Somanath said on the occasion of National Space Day.
  • The Chandrayaan-4 spacecraft will have five separate modules, officials said. The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, which made a historic landing near the South Pole of the Moon, had three modules — the propulsion module (or the engine), a lander and a rover.

  • Diana Pundole, a teacher and mother from Pune, made history as the first Indian woman to win the national championship in the saloon category at the MRF Indian National Car Racing Championship 2024 held in Chennai. Her achievement is especially notable as it came in a sport traditionally dominated by men, highlighting her determination and skill despite numerous challenges.
  • Diana's journey into the world of racing began eight years ago with an unexpected phone call from Coimbatore, inviting her to participate in a car racing championship. At that time, she was among 200 women selected from all over India to undergo rigorous trials as part of a national talent hunt.

  • The Maharaja Trophy match between Bengaluru Blasters and Hubli Tigers made its way into the record books when the game had to be concluded after 3 Super Overs, the first time something like this had occurred in cricket history.
  • The Hubli Tigers led by Manish Pandey finally won after the third Super Over against the Mayank Agarwal led Bengaluru Blasters after 2 Super Overs and the normal regulated overs were not enough to separate the two sides.

MoU between DARPG, Government of India and Public Service Department

  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India and Public Service Department, Prime Minister's Department, Government of Malaysia signed MoU on 'Co-operation in the field of Public Administration and Governance Reforms' for a period of five years.
  • The Memorandum of Understanding aims that the two countries endeavour to take necessary steps to encourage and promote co-operation in the areas like Providing Citizen Centric Services through digital platform; Government Process Simplification and Re-engineering for effective delivery of public services through digital platform; Promoting Transparency and Accountability in delivery of public services; Human Resource Management/Leadership Development; Public Sector Management and Reforms; Public Grievance Redress Mechanisms; and E-Governance/ Digital Government.

Health Ministry Constitutes National Task Force on Healthcare Worker Safety

  • The Health Ministry formed a 14-member National Task Force (NTF) to address the safety and working conditions of medical professionals in India. In response to ongoing protests and as mandated by the Supreme Court, the NTF will develop recommendations focused on preventing violence against healthcare workers and establishing national protocols for dignified and safe working conditions across the medical profession.
  • The NTF's primary focus will include creating an action plan to prevent violence against medical professionals and ensuring safe working conditions. This includes setting protocols for the safety of interns, residents, senior residents, doctors, nurses, and other medical staff. The task force is also tasked with addressing sexual violence within medical establishments and ensuring compliance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
  • The NTF will be led by the Cabinet Secretary, with members including key officials from the Union Health and Home Ministries, the National Medical Commission, and prominent medical institutions across India. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will provide logistical support, including travel, stay, and secretarial assistance for the task force members.

Deepti Gaur Mukherjee Assumes Charge as MCA Secretary

  • Deepti Gaur Mukherjee, a 1993 batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, took over as the Secretary of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), succeeding Manoj Govil, who assumed the role of Expenditure Secretary. Before this, Mukherjee served as the CEO of the National Health Authority.
  • As the new MCA Secretary, Mukherjee's tenure begins at a crucial time when the Ministry is focusing on several significant reforms, including the framing of the draft Digital Competition Bill, the introduction of IBC 2.0, and enhancing the capacity of National Company Law Tribunals (NCLTs). The MCA is also set to implement provisions from the Competition Act 2023, the most substantial revision of competition law since 2002.

FIR Lodged against Shakib Al Hasan over Alleged Murder Charges during Bangladesh Unrest

  • Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was named as one of the accused in connection with an alleged murder that took place during the protests (in August 2024) and violence in Bangladesh which left hundreds dead.
  • The murder case was filed by Rafiqul Islam, the father of the deceased Mohammed Rubel at Dhaka's Adabor police station and apart from Shakib, PM Sheikh Hasina, and many former ministers and lawmakers from the party are among the accused.

Rs. 10, 000 under the Subhadra Yojana for Women in Odisha

  • Over 1 crore women, aged between 21 and 60 years, in Odisha will receive Rs. 10,000 annually under the Subhadra Yojana of the BJP-led government in the state.
  • Calling it a "path breaking" initiative for women empowerment in Odisha, CM Mohan Charan Majhi announced the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the scheme, which is set to be launched on the occasion of PM Modi's birthday, on September 17.

Education Ministry Launches Second Cycle of Learning Disability Training Programme

  • The Ministry of Education (MoE) launched the second cycle of its capacity-building programme on specific learning disability (SLD) under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP).
  • The programme is intended to equip higher educational institutions (HEIs) with the skills and knowledge necessary to support students with specific learning disabilities. The second cycle of the program will run until December 2024, with sessions being held both online and in-person with a new set of identified HEIs.

17th Divya Kala Mela Concludes

  • The 17th Divya Kala Mela inaugurated by Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Virendra Kumar in Raipur concluded on August 23. The week-long fair focused on empowering artisans and entrepreneurs with disabilities, and celebrated their talent and creativity. The landmark event was organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) [DEPwD], under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.
  • The Mela was more than just a marketplace and empowered Divyangjan under one roof through the 'Divya Kala Shakti' 'Job Fairs' and 'Loan Mela' initiatives.
  • Raipur's Divya Kala Mela was the 17th in a series of such events that have been held across the country since 2022. Previous editions in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, and Guwahati have been met with widespread acclaim, each contributing to the growing movement to uplift and empower Divyangjan through skill development and market exposure.

Supreme Court Judges Launch Book on Commercial Dispute Resolution

  • A book on 'Commercial Dispute Resolution- State of the Law in India' was released by Supreme Court judge Justice K. V. Viswanathan and retired Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul in New Delhi.
  • The book, published by LexisNexis, will also be launched in Chennai by Supreme Court judge Justice M. M. Sundresh and Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice D. Krishnakumar along with American lawyer Gary B. Born on August 31, 2024.
  • The chief editor of the book is advocate Anirudh Krishnan and the book includes contributions from his current and ex-colleagues at AK Law Chambers.
  • The book identifies the issues with the commercial dispute resolution system as of 2015, analyses the working of marquee commercial dispute resolution-related legislation post-2015, namely the Commercial Courts Act, 2015; the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016; amendments to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 in 2015 and subsequent amendments; and the Mediation Act, 2023.
