UN Human Rights Team to Visit Bangladesh to Investigate Human Rights Violations
A human rights team from the United Nations will visit Dhaka next week to discuss with the Bangladesh interim government, investigations into the human rights violations during the recent unrest in Bangladesh.
The team visiting Bangladesh will discuss with the interim government areas of support and the modalities for an investigation of human rights violations in the context of the recent violence and unrest, Haq said. Turk said in a statement issued in Geneva that a comprehensive, impartial, and transparent investigation into all human rights violations and abuses that have occurred will be a critical first step.
RBI Approves Salee Sukumaran Nair as MD & CEO of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the appointment of Salee Sukumaran Nair as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) for a three-year term. Nair, a seasoned banker with over 35 years of experience, is stepping into this role following his tenure as Deputy Managing Director and Chief Credit Officer at the State Bank of India (SBI). His appointment came after the bank was temporarily overseen by a three-member Committee of Executives (COEs) due to the RBI's earlier rejection of proposed candidates.
Government Reduces Crude Oil Tax, Eliminates Diesel and ATF Levies
India reduced the windfall tax on petroleum crude oil to Rs. 2,100 per metric tonne, effective August 17, down from Rs. 4,600 per tonne. This adjustment follows a previous reduction of 34.2 per cent to Rs. 4,600 on July 31. The government also eliminated the windfall tax on the export of diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF).
Introduced in July 2022, the windfall tax aimed to address the preference of private refiners to sell fuel internationally for better margins, rather than selling domestically. The tax is revised bi-weekly based on international crude and product price fluctuations.

Deutsche Bank appointed Manik Chhabra as the Head of Global Corporate Coverage for India and Sri Lanka.
Chhabra, who previously served as India Head for mid corporates at Citibank, brings over 22 years of experience in senior leadership roles across sales and product management. In his new role, he will be responsible for expanding Deutsche Bank's presence in the Indian and Sri Lankan markets, focusing on accelerating growth among local and multinational corporate clients.
Chhabra will report to Chintan Shah, Head of Corporate Coverage and Head of Cash Management Sales for APAC, and Kaushik Shaparia, CEO of Emerging Asia and Chief Country Officer for India. Additionally, Chhabra will join the Deutsche Bank India Branch Management Board.
Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa could not really change his fortunes for the better and remained in the last spot going into the final day of the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz chess tournament in the US. India hosted the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit (VOGSS) on August 17 2024. This unique initiative began as an extension of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas', and is underpinned by India's philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. It envisages bringing together countries of the Global South to share their perspectives and priorities on a common platform across a whole range of issues.
India had hosted the 1st Voice of Global South Summit (VOGSS) on January 12 and 13, 2023, and the 2nd Voice of Global South Summit on November 17, 2023, both in virtual format. Both the previous editions of the Summit saw participation of over 100 countries from the Global South. The inputs and feedback received from the leaders of the developing countries in these two Summits was appropriately reflected in the agenda and discussions of the G-20 Summit under India's Presidency last year, including in the G-20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration.
The 3rd VOGSS, with the overarching theme of 'An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future', acted as a platform to expand discussions held in the previous Summits on a range of complex challenges that continue to affect the world, such as conflicts, food and energy security crises, climate change - all of which disproportionately affect developing countries in a severe manner.
ACC Approves 18 Transfers, Rajesh Kumar Singh to be Defence Secretary
Days after a new Cabinet Secretary and Union Home Secretary were appointed, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), in a major bureaucratic reshuffle across ministries, approved 18 appointments at the Secretary level, including that of Rajesh Kumar Singh, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, who is set to take over as Defence Secretary.
Singh — who was Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry — will initially take charge as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Defence, before he takes over as Defence Secretary when the incumbent Secretary Giridhar Aramane ends his tenure on October 31 this year. Singh's tenure as Defence Secretary has been extended until October 31, 2026, beyond the age of superannuation.
The 4th India-Vietnam Maritime Security Dialogue was held at Hanoi close on the heels of Vietnam PM visit to India.

The Maharashtra government officially launch and roll out the 'Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana', which seeks to provide Rs. 1500 per month to over one crore women in the state.
Modelled on the lines of the 'Ladli Behna Yojana' in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured that this scheme will not be temporary and will continue indefinitely.
The Maharashtra government has launched an app called Nari Shakti Dhoot, through which women eligible for the scheme can easily apply online.
In order to be eligible for the scheme, women need to qualify as a permanent resident of the state of Maharashtra. The scheme is also applicable only for women between the age of 21 and 65. Further, in order to aid those who are financially disadvantaged, the scheme only applies for women whose family or household income is less than Rs. 2.5 lakh per annum.
NHA & MUHS Sign MoU to Offer Digital Health Education & Support Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission
National Health Authority (NHA) and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda in New Delhi. As per the MoU, MUHS will offer its Digital Health Foundation Course to NHA and co-develop additional Digital Health programs to support the roll-out of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The Digital Health Foundation Course provides a comprehensive understanding of Digital Health fundamentals to doctors and healthcare providers. On the occasion, Health Minister J.P. Nadda said that the partnership between NHA and MUHS marks a significant milestone in integrating digital health education into the medical curriculum. He said the MoU laid the foundation for a more connected and effective healthcare ecosystem. He also said this partnership will not only enhance the skills of medical students and professionals but also drive the broader implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, ultimately benefiting millions of people with better access to quality care.
Central Bureau of Communication Organises Photo Exhibition on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day at Lalit Kala Academy
An exhibition organised by the Central Bureau of Communication, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, marking the "Partition Horrors Remembrance Day" was held at Lalit Kala Academy (LKA), New Delhi from August 14 to 17, 2024.
This exhibition sought to bring to light the personal stories, the immense pain, and the lasting impact of the partition of 1947 on countless lives. This exhibition aimed to honour the memories of those who suffered and to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities and human cost of this historic event. It showcased historical photographs, videos & interactive displays, providing insights into the theme.
This exhibition was not only a reflection on the past but also an opportunity for the future generations, specifically the students and youth, to engage in meaningful conversations about how we can build a future grounded in empathy, reconciliation, and unity.
Med-Arb Centre Launched at Gujarat High Court Arbitration Centre (18)
An a significant move, a Med-Arb (Mediation-Arbitration) Centre was launched at the Gujarat High Court Arbitration Centre in the High Court campus.
On August 15, after the customary Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony, Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal of the Gujarat High Court inaugurated the Med-Arb Centre in the presence of High Court Justices, specially trained mediators and other legal luminaries.
Med-Arb is a form of alternative dispute resolution that involves the integration of mediation in matters referred for arbitration.
In May this year (2024), the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority (GSLSA) had organized an orientation and training program whereby eleven advocates, who exclusively deal with commercial cases or arbitration matters were trained by expert mediators.
