Tunisia's President Replaces Prime Minister Ahead of October Election
In a political shakeup, Tunisia's President Kais Saied dismissed Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani and appointed Kamel Maddouri, the former Social Affairs Minister, to the role. This change marked the sixth prime ministerial appointment under Saied's administration. The announcement came just before Tunisia's presidential election on October 6, amid growing social and economic unrest.
President Saied's decision to replace Hachani, who had been in office for only a year, was made without providing specific reasons.
Since coming to power in 2019, Saied has implemented significant changes, including suspending the parliament and rewriting the constitution to centralise power.
New Plant Species Ceropegia Shivrayiana Discovered at Vishalgad
A new flowering plant called Ceropegia Shivrayiana was discovered in the Vishalgad area of Kolhapur, Maharashtra. This discovery was detailed in a research paper, highlighting the biodiversity and ecological importance of Vishalgad Fort.
The plant was found by a team which spent the past six years studying the plants at Vishalgad Fort.
The name Ceropegia shivrayiana honours Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, reflecting the region's cultural heritage. Researchers believe that naming the plant after Shivaji pays tribute to his appreciation for the ecological importance of forts and their surroundings.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept the benchmark interest rate and stance unchanged at 6.5 per cent for the ninth straight policy meeting.
Four out of the six Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) members voted in favour of the rate decision. With repo rates unchanged, all external benchmark lending rates (EBLR) that are linked to the repo rate will not increase, giving relief to borrowers as their equated monthly instalments (EMIs) will not increase.
Genpact Appoints Sanjeev Vohra as Chief Technology and Innovation Officer
In a bid to increase the focus on delivery of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, Genpact announced the appointment of Sanjeev Vohra as its first Chief Technology and Innovation Officer (CTIO) with immediate effect.
Vohra, who brings more than 30 years of technology, consulting and industry expertise with him, will report to Balkrishan Kalra, president and CEO, Genpact.
Before Genpact, Vohra served as the global lead of Accenture applied intelligence where he led the company's data and AI business and advised c-suite executives across industries on the strategic application of data, advanced analytics and AI.
DBS Appoints Tan Su Shan as First Female CEO
Indian-origin top Singapore banker Piyush Gupta is set to step down as the Chief Executive Officer of the DBS Group in March 2025. He will be succeeded by Tan Su Shan, who was appointed Deputy CEO, in addition to being Group Head, Institutional Banking, at DBS.
Tan is Singaporean and an Oxford University graduate. She has 35 years of experience in consumer banking, wealth management and institutional banking. Tan began her career at ING Baring Securities in institutional equity and derivative sales. She joined Morgan Stanley (MS.N), opens new tab in 1997 as an Executive Director before becoming Citigroup's (C.N), opens new tab regional head for Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore in 2005. She then returned to Morgan Stanley in 2008 as head of private wealth management for Southeast Asia. Tan joined DBS in 2010, where she spent the first three years building the bank's wealth management business.
Neeraj Chopra came up with a season best throw of 89.45m and clinched the silver in javelin throw event at Paris Olympics 2024. Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, however, did better as he set a new Olympic record mark of 92.97m and took home the gold. He is now the first individual Olympic gold medallist from Pakistan. Arshad Nadeem broke the earlier Olympic record of 90.57 - set in 2008 Beijing Olympics by Norway's Andreas Thorkildsen. Grenada's Anderson Peters took the bronze (88.54m).
Assam and Mizoram held ministerial-level talks to address the long-standing border dispute between the two north-eastern states.
The Assam delegation was headed by Order Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora, while the Mizoram delegation was led by Home Minister K. Sapdanga.
It's worth noting that this was the first border talks between Assam and Mizoram since the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, assumed power in December 2023.
The border dispute between Mizoram and Assam involves three Mizoram districts—Aizawl, Kolasib, and Mamit, which share a 164.6 km boundary with Assam's Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts.

World Biofuel Day is observed to honour Sir Rudolf Diesel for his research experiments. In the year 1983, he successfully ran a diesel engine with the help of peanut oil by predicting that vegetable oil would replace fossil fuels in the next century to fuel various mechanical engines.
The theme for World Biofuel Day 2024 is 'Sustainable Biofuels: Reducing Waste, Feeding Energy'.

World Lion Day is an international annual event observed on the 10th of August. World Lion Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of lions. The wild cat 'Asiatic Lion' is considered a vulnerable and endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List
World Lion Day was established in 2013 by Big Cat Rescue, the world's largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to lions.
It was co-founded by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, a husband-and-wife team who recognised the urgent need to highlight the declining lion populations and the threats they were encountering in their natural habitats.
In collaboration with "National Geographic," the Jouberts initiated the Big Cat Initiative (B.C.I.) in 2009.
Since then, World Lion Day has been observed annually on August 10. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the conservation challenges faced by lions and to celebrate the beauty and significance of these iconic large felines.
BITS Pilani Opens Research Centre for National Security at Hyderabad Campus
Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani Hyderabad announced the inauguration of a new Centre for Research Excellence in National Security (CRENS). This strategic initiative aims to significantly enhance the nation's security capabilities through indigenous technology development by joint research, skill development and entrepreneurship.
CRENS will play a crucial role in supporting the country to become self-reliant in the national security domain in collaboration with DRDO, ISRO, DAE, Tri-services, Paramilitary Forces, Police, Defence PSUs and Industries. The inauguration ceremony of CRENS was graced by Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Former Secretary DD R&D, Former Chairman of DRDO, and Former Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, as the Chief Guest. Dr Reddy officially inaugurated CRENS and unveiled its logo.
Dhiraj Singh Appointed FTII Director
Senior information service officer Dhiraj Singh was appointed as the director of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
Singh, an Indian Information Service officer of the 1995 batch, was the additional director general in the Press Information Bureau in-charge of media and communications of the Prime Minister's Office.
He has a five-year tenure as FTII director. Singh succeeded Sandeep Shahare to the post.
The Adivasi Mahotsav-2024 was held in Ranchi on the occasion of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.
The two-day state-sponsored festival was held at Bhagwan Birsa Munda Memorial Park cum Museum in Jail Chowk, aiming at promoting tribal art, culture, lifestyle, cuisine, music and dance.
State Coordination Committee Chairman Shibu Soren, also a Rajya Sabha MP, inaugurated the third edition of the festival.
Artists from tribal communities of Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tripura, Chhattisgarh and other states will participate in the festival, and showcase their traditions and culture.
